The news can't instill FEAR into their audience if they focus too much on honoring the dead.
The number 1 reason (i believe) people pay attention to news, is to make them FEEL concern over things that don't normally involve them.

Yup.

Best way to avoid depressing or dumb news. Skip the news, except for more objective things like sports, business or weather reports which is mostly just numbers. The second someone gets into the nightly recap of crime, political views, stupidity and editorials where a writer thinks his opinion is the best view on Earth, that's where the issues start.

If it wasnt for GAF's OT tab and the Gaming tab for global and gaming news and tweets, I'd get hardly any local and global news. My coworkers even laugh when I ask them about local topics and they know the answer because they watch the news and I dont.

On TV, I focus on sports and comedy reruns and lately binge sessions of Shark Tank (excellent show for anyone who has never watched it). I'll check key news sometimes when I check for sports, business and weather when the page has other topics, but most of time I dont give a shit.

The world is connected 24/7, which means any news site can now churn out fearmongering content 24/7. Before it was just newspapers and TV news. Not everyone subbed to a newspaper back in the day and not everyone caught nightly news. So there could be days nobody really knew anything. But now it's different.

Due to this fear and constant barrage of crime and hate, I bet most people surveyed would say crime is at an all time high. But it's not. Crime rates were worse in the 70s and 80s and I think even 90s. Crime had steadily decreased for decades and leveled off the past 20 years (I dont know the exact trend but it's pretty close to this). But so many people now go ape shit in fear and buying guns as if the boogeyman is going to barge through the door.
