A little off topic but I figure this is probably the best place to ask this seeing as its the only active comic book thread. As someone who has some vague knowledge of X-men (I've picked up an issue here and there over the years so I'm familiar with all the big players) but wants to seriously get into it, whats a good place to start? A quick search reveals that there are several versions with multiple spin offs.

i really enjoyed most of the whole messiah complex/war event, had a lot've the fun/drama of 90s crossovers like age of apocalypse.

right now, you can't go wrong with X-Factor (excellent standalone peter david title, great feel to the team) and a lot of us are enjoying Uncanny X-Force for the action. are there any characters in particular you're looking for?

please dont say wolverine, his book/event is pretty shit right now, even by that book's standards

What the what, my comic store didn't put BPRD in my file. They've been doing this with other books almost weekly now. I think I need to change shops.

Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men stuff.

I have to admit that I found Adventure a little awkwardly written. Jiminez drew the heck out of it, you could tell it was a labour of love, but it wasn't often clear who everybody was and the storytelling got a bit jumpy at times. I hope Giffen helps out on the writing chores with this one too.

My exposure to X-men consists a handful of comics from the late 80's/early-mid 90's and a few episodes of the television show they ran for awhile. The only characters I'm really familiar with would probably be considered the more mainstream ones; Cyclops, Magneto, Storm, Prof X, Beast, etc. So if theres anything currently running, or available in book form that includes them, I would be interested in it. Though I am of course not against reading anything with whatever new cast they have provided the story is decent.

I always thought Wolverine was a pretty bland character. I don't get the love for him.

The Joss Whedon run is the best suggestion for you. It's really well written and drawn, is largely a self-contained story, and deals mainly with the core characters. It's collected in four trades, I think the first one is called Gifted.

Just saw the May solicits for Batman and I'm a bit confused. I thought Tomasi/Gleason were the new team for the book but May's solicit has it written by Judd Winick and drawn by Guillen March and it's the first issue of a three book arc. Are Tomasi/Gleason only there for this current arc?
I thought Tomasi and Gleason were permanent, but given that their first issue was pushed back three months, I suppose another delay won't hurt so much. The only upside to Winick is that the new arc focuses on Jason Todd, and he can write the hell out of him.

I've got nothing against Winick at all, he's a solid writer.
It was just odd to read them pimping Tomasi/Gleason and then as soon as May there's a new team for a 3 issue arc.

Astonishing X-Men for the bestest.
Uncanny X-Force for the best.
Second Coming for the great.

Thanks for the reply guys, looking into the books by Joss Whedon right now. Sounds perfect for what I was interested in.

Just as a side note though, I went to my local comic shop the today and was shocked to find that almost all of the series I read as a kid were still running. I mean, how many crossovers, alternate universes/timelines, spin-offs, and variations of a character can you have?

Holy crap people!

My shop is having a 50% off Back Issues sale, 75% OFF if you pay with cash!

I spent so much money. D:

Now I only need 11 issues to finish my Kamandi run.

Also manga was knocked down to $2 a volume. :O

I have to say, I thought Tomasi's first issue on Batman & Robin was really disappointing. Not interesting and the voices really sounded off to me for some reason.

I think Grant Morrison's New X-Men and Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is the definitive one-two punch as far as X-Men comics go.

^damn. i always miss those sales, $2 manga would have me trying to fill in the gaps of my Berserk collection.

Yeah, they had some Berserk there but since my Droid is being a freak I couldn't check my DB to see what I needed.

It's not uncommon for most shops to just NOT have sales.

What's helping me out is my LCS is moving so they need to get rid of stuff so there's less to move. :)

Maybe they're closing.

EDIT: Or moving, as you've clarified.

If I send you some money, do you think you could buy me everything Deadpool in the store?

1. The shipping would probably kill the deal.

2. I don't want them getting the impression I like crappy characters. I think I already burned up the "I'm buying this for a friend" for someone else with some stupid Gambit funnybooks. D:

My LCS has had a massive sale on Marvel hardbacks since the first of the year. I picked up the Marvel Premiere Classic edition of Daredevil: The Man Without Fear for like $10 or so back in January but the rest of the stuff they've marked down really doesn't interest me.

Yeah, Diamond offered shops a good deal on hardcovers to clear out their warehouse apparently. A lot of shops around here were getting in on it and selling them, on average, for 50% off. I snagged a handful despite hating the format. It was less expensive than Amazon.

Yep, that's what they told me.
They've included a couple of the older DC Archives (at $25/ea) books as well, bur sadly nothing I'm looking for. One day I'm going to go in and they'll have the Green Lantern Omnibus on sale.

Hey spike, if you subscribe to the online marvel thing, do they update with new issues with it? Like the ones in your OP are on there when the physical are out, or they're delayed, or nothing at all? Also, does DC have anything similar to what marvel is doing? Thanks.

Unless they make an exception, the comics available on Marvel's digital service are several months behind at least. Reason being, you can't expect to pay $5/month and get to read everything that people are paying $4 apiece for on comic shelves that same day. Their iOS service may be kept more up to date, and get more same day releases because you're paying for individual issues there.

And DC only has an iOS service going, as does Image/Archie/IDW/Dark Horse and countless others.

The only day & date digital service is going to be the new Diamond one.

I realize Thunderstrike is dumb fun, but I really wish this chick would stop calling the kid "mort" as shortened "mortal". So bad.

Then again, that's kind of why I'm buying this. lol

Hello, comic book GAF. I wanted some recommendations based on stuff my lady and I have been enjoying. Is it ok to ask in this thread or is there a comics OT? Thanks for your time.

There have been a few suggestion threads over the years, you can search for them; if those don't suit your needs then ask away.

Well, to be quite honest, I've never gotten into comics. I simply would not know where to start. So, what I had in mind was asking for suggestions based on the one and only series I am currently reading and familiar with. I don't know how popular it is. It's Irredeemable by Mark Waid.
So, if anyone is familiar with it, any suggestions for some more stuff? We're open to anything and everything, from the more popular stuff like Superman to the more obscure or indie.

I rather liked it although the change in pace really came out of nowhere. Looking forward to the rest of the run. Gleason is almost the greatest hits of the first wave of Batman and Robin artists.

Morrison and Whedons runs are hugely different but both very enjoyable. Whedon does the family part more and Morrison the sci fi adventure. Pick whichever you feel the mood for but can't really lose on either.

I've had the Free Comic Book Day issue of Irredeemable sitting in one of my "to read" boxes for nearly a year now. D:

Maybe I'll do that tomorrow since I'm in a very superhero mood lately. Just can't get enough.

There is the sister series "Incorruptable" which complements it nicely. If you are looking for a long running series keep in mind that unless it is something creator owned like "Irredeemable" quality will vary with creative team. Best thing you can do is to follow creators you like. Given that you are reading and seemingly enjoying Mark Waid's work I can heartily recommend you try "kingdom come" and "52" from DC. Kingdom Come is a single book and 52 is just four.

If it's the same one i got(it's also what made me fall in love with this),it also includes some of Incorruptible.
As for the bold, I should have pointed that out. Superhero recommendations would be most welcome.

We've been hesitant on Incorruptible simply because we were afraid it would spoil stuff in Irredeemable. But, if it complements Irredeemable then I think we'll be picking up volume 1 tomorrow.
Definitely enjoying Irredeemable and after looking up Kingdom Come, I think Mark Waid's stuff will do nicely.
In regards to 52, should I read up on Infinite Crisis?

edit: Last thing: could you please direct me to the correct or preferable version of Kingdom Come? I found these two:
Kingdom Come ISBN-10: 1401220347
or
Kingdom Come ISBN-10: 1563893304

Same thing just different print runs and covers by the look of things. 52 spins out from Infinite Crisis but you should be able to follow it well enough on its own. They make the important things clear enough. Infinite Crisis is an okay read though if you want to check it out, just that its so entrenched in DC lore that you will think you need to go even further back which you don't.

I quite liked it; almost skipped it after blader's bad review, but I liked the preview so I got it anyway. I thought his Damien was over the top though. Morrison's was an entertaining snobby little psycho, this is just a snarky kid.

Ultimate Cap was awesomely over the top. The moment where he
belted Carol Danvers
will live on in infamy.

And I'm sure I'll be alone on this one, but I got a couple of issues of the Guggenheim/Kolins JSA run, and I actually thought it was pretty enjoyable aside from the injured Alan Scott thing. It doesn't make sense to me, but it was established that he can be injured when they did the best-forgotten eyepatch thing when they tried to make him into a Nick Fury clone. Guggenheim's Jay Garrick is awesome though. First Flash is best Flash.

Just read Incorruptible FCBD issue and I think you would really enjoy Stracyznski / Frank's Supreme Power.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/078511369X/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I think there are newer less expensive printings available.

Just stick with the first two collections as the wheels kind of fall off near the end of vol.2, but it's a page turner while it's running hot.
