Pretty nice week.

It's nice to see that New Avengers is finally gonna start focusin on Sentry... I'm real curious to see his power curve and 'history' explored. If I've read correctly the appearance/reappearance of this character pushes him right near the top in terms of most powerful marvel universe characters.

let's see.....

ACTION COMICS #829 *sacrifice continues, this week supes beats the crap out of darkseid. maybe*

ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN THE BOY WONDER #1

HAWKMAN #42

JLA #116 *this is very important to the whole infinite crisis thing.*

RANN THANAGAR WAR #3 (OF 6) *so far this has been teh least favorite of all the four series, may not buy it.*

WONDER WOMAN #218

NIGHTWING #110

ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN THE BOY WONDER #1
BATMAN #642
JLA #116

And Maybe
ACTION COMICS #829
NEW AVENGERS #7

Not as brutal as last week, but still a fair pile of comics:

Desolation Jones #2
Seven Soldiers: Guardian #3 (of 4)
Wonder Woman #218
Walking Dead #20
New Thunderbolts #10
Ultimate Fantastic Four #21
Ultimate X-Men #61
Dork Tower #31
Here Is Greenwood Vol. 5

And, the highlight of the week:

10755.jpg

Serenity #1 (of 3)

Woo!

FnordChan

I'll be picking up:

ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN THE BOY WONDER #1
DESOLATION JONES #2
HAWKMAN #42
JLA #116
SEVEN SOLDIERS GUARDIAN #3 (OF 4)
NEW AVENGERS #7

I don't give two shits about a War Games epilogue, so I'll be skipping Batman till the regular creative team returns in September.

Covers:

solrac: Why the hell aren't you reading DESOLATION JONES?

This is good Ellis. Not crappy Ultimate Marvel Ellis. I predict DJ will be Ellis' next great serial, alongside Transmet and Planetary. JH Williams is also great, as usual. He really took sequential art to the next level on Promethea, and I'm intrigued to see what he can do on DJ. He's definitely proven himself to be A-list.

For anyone wanting to pick up a quirky new ongoing, get Desolation Jones. #1 is probably still widely available, and #2 comes out this week. Jump aboard the bandwagon while you still can!

i'll pick it up this week and buy nightwing later then. :D

SERENITY #1
ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN THE BOY WONDER #1
DESOLATION JONES #2
FABLES #39
MNEMOVORE #4 (OF 6)
RANN THANAGAR WAR #3 (OF 6)
SEVEN SOLDIERS GUARDIAN #3 (OF 4)
NEW AVENGERS #7

Really really excited about New Avengers, I loved the original Sentry series and I've been anxiously awaiting this Sentry-centric arc. Good week all around, really, Desolation Jones would usually make a week, but here, it's just icing on the cake.

SERENITY CASSADAY CVR #1 , SERENITY HITCH CVR #1, SERENITY J G JONES CVR #1 - One of these
ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN THE BOY WONDER #1 - I really can't wait for this. Don't let me down Miller!!
DESOLATION JONES #2 (MR) - I can't remember when the first part came out, but I do remember enjoying it.
SEVEN SOLDIERS GUARDIAN #3 - YES!
NEW AVENGERS #7, NEW AVENGERS NEAL ADAMS VARIANT #7 - maybe one of these
ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #21 - Millar is back on this book now right? I might pick it up but the story seems like it's going to be kind of bleh, not sure i'm ready for
The ultimate and regular universe to meet yet
if that's actually what happens in this arc.

Oh my god it's the best week ever.

SERENITY HITCH CVR #1 (OF 3) - I got hooked on this whole Firefly thing recently. Watched the dvds in like a week and caught the movie in one of the June screenings. No way I'd pass up a comic version, especially since Whedon is writing it. A Hitch cover is cool... you can pretend that it's the next issue of Ultimates if you squint at it funny.

ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN THE BOY WONDER #1 - I don't know, I just think it's funny that the guy who pissed all over superhero nostalgia in Strikes Again is writing All Star Boy Wonder Stories. Maybe we're all supposed to pretend that Strikes Again never happened... that's probably a good idea. Anyway, I'm getting the ROBIN THE BOY WONDER cover. Just because.

DESOLATION JONES #2 - Solid book.

SEVEN SOLDIERS GUARDIAN #3 (OF 4) - Ongoing Grant Morrison Superhero Freak-Out.

SEXY VOICE AND ROBO VOL 1 GN - I can't really describe this one... I've read some Kuroda through internet scan translations, and I really like his stuff. That's not much of a capsule summary, but I've been looking forward to it for a while.

I was just thinking, this thread would've gotten a lot more hits if the thread title were marked SERENITY SERENITY SERENITY.

That way, we get all the Whedon geeks in here.

Whoa, speaking of comics... long time fan here but hasn't read any in years...

I went to the comic book shop yestrerday and up at th front, they had this trade paper back, pretty thick of a new comic called "The New Age of Apocalypse" or something like that... and it looked like it had the art of Chris Pachlo or whatever his name was who did X-Men in 99 or something... anyways... it lookd fucking awesome and I never knew Marvel did it... can somebody give me more information on what it is?

Picking up my first comic book issue ever. Have about 5 or so graphic novels but this is a first. All-star Batman & Robin The Boy Wonder for me, and maybe anything else that looks interesting. Seems like Serenity, New Avengers The Sentry, and Desolation Jones may be be good to try and start with if I'm looking to get into comics long haul.

Best week I've seen in a while:

APR050036 BERSERK VOL 8 TP (MR) $13.95
MAY050190 ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN THE BOY WONDER #1 $2.99
MAY050195 BATMAN #642 $2.50
MAY050235 JLA #116 $2.50

I'm also going to try and get my hands bloody with the Man of Steel:

MAY050214 ACTION COMICS #829 $2.50
????????? SUPERMAN #219 $2.25
APR050359 WONDER WOMAN #218 $2.50*

*From the description, I've got a feeling WW #218 also has something to do with "Sacrifice."

argh, looks like Ultimates 2 #7 is shipping next week, meaning my order from bobscomics.com isn't going to ship until next week. Screw it, I'm going down to the shop and picking up All Star Batman. That way, I'll be able to enjoy with the rest of you guys and I won't have to worry about my order shipping with the Robin cover :)

I'll be honest: the book probably sucks. Akira Yoshida is one of the worst writers in the business, and Chris Bachalo's art has evolved to such a level where it is completely unintelligible.

Of course, if you were a HUGE fan of the original AoA, you'll probably have fun with this. A few AoA diehards at my shop liked the series despite the awful reviews.

Welcome aboard! New Avengers is a lot of fun - you can either get started with this week's issue, or the first trade.

Desolation Jones is a GREAT pick for new readers wanting something different. Writing and art is superb.

And Serenity - though I'm not buying it myself, it is a Josh Whedon book/project. He doesn't miss very often.

Green Arrow for me. I'm not liking the new art team and am hoping that it changes SOON. Fuuuck, just bring back Hester and Parks.

What happened to all the Walking Dead fanboys? Read the first trade...good stuff.

Looks like Marvel isn't too shy to pimp the recent "bomb" dropped in House of M... *sigh*

First two are House of M #4 covers (variant & regular), third cover is Pulse #10 cover:

To Marvel's credit, the House of M covers do look pretty good. The Pulse cover on the other hand, is butt-ugly.

Heh, was just looking through my longbox when I used to be that go-to-the-shop-every-week kinda guy and I can't believe what great serieses I didn't get to finish:

Chosen - #1-2
Wanted - #1-4
Seaguy - #1-2

And I didn't even get to experience WE3. Need to see if I can get that last issues of Chosen and Seaguy, and might get the Wanted trade (definately getting the WE3 trade).

Also got some gaps in a couple books:

Catwoman #1-8, #10, #14-19
Ultimate Spider-Man #33-38, #40-61

Also, lots of series I started that I wish I could've continued:

Astonishing X-Men #1-2
Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1-3 (at least until Millar finished his run)
Ex Machina #1 (I know #1-5 is in trade form, as well as #6-10 coming out soon)
Sleeper Season Two #1
Ultimate Fantastic Four #1-8 (dunno about this though, I heard Ultimate Warren Ellis...ultimately sucked)
Conan #1-5 (god this book was soooo good, now they're up to like #20. What issues does the first trade collect?)

At least I have the full goodness of Ultimates #1-13 and Sleeper #1-12! :D

Desolation Jones is terrific, and with only two issues out it's easy to jump on board. Our hero is a moderately broken wreck of a British super-agent project gone wrong who has been exiled to Los Angeles, which is being used as an open-air prison for cast-offs of the intelligence community. Cue weird shit going down, extrordinarily black humor, and Warren Ellis Going There(tm).

Serenity should be a bang-up three issue miniseries, but keep in mind that you may get more out of it if you're already a fan of the TV series Firefly. I haven't read the issue yet myself, but my understanding is that the mini-series is to a) act as a bridge between the TV show and the upcoming movie, Serenity, and b) to introduce folks to the series. Seeing as it's all of three issues total, I'd say, what the hell, jump in and give it a shot. However if the first issue has left you hopelessly confused you may want to go rent all of Firefly before buying issue two. Or, you may just stop buying the series, but as a rabid Firefly fan I'm obliged to evangelize a bit.

While you're at the comic shop, a few more suggestions for recent releases you may want to check out:

Solo is a DC series where they give a creator 48 ad-free pages to do, well, whatever they want to do. The sixth issue just came out and features Darwyn Cooke being completely and utterly awesome, providing a wide range of stories, gags, pin-ups, and other assorted tidbits in his wonderful retro style. Some of the fiddly DC continuity stuff and fanboy gags may be lost on you, but that's entirely secondary to the excellent art and solid storytelling. A tad pricey at five bucks but quite worth it; if nothing else, give it a flip-through.

Grant Morrison is currently working on his sprawling Seven Soldiers project for DC - seven loosely connected four-issue miniseries, linked by a prologue and an epilogue, designed to be read in any way you want...a series here, a series there, just the prologue/epilogue, the whole shebang, whatever. So far it's all pretty freakin' amazing. If you're curious, see if your shop still has the prologue issue handy, or see if any of the currently released mini's meet your fancy:

- Guardian - A New York tabloid hires their own superhero, who promptly finds himself chasing after underground pirates who use subway cars tearing down abandoned rail in lieu of ships.

- Zatanta - A stage magician with a bit of real power finds herself in the midst of serious modern occult weirdness of the mildly apocolyptic variety.

- Klarion: The Witch Boy - The tale of a runaway boy and his loyal familiar who bail on puritan limbo to seek the wonders of the world above. Deeply, delightfully odd and a bit difficult to describe properly.

- Shining Knight - Arthur's knights get the hell whiped out of them by the forces of evil, with only one survivor, armed with his indestructable sword and kept company by his winged horse, making it to contemporary (near future?) NYC, where he promptly tangles with the cops, the mob, and all sorts of nasty business.

So far all of the minis released have been uniformly excellent on all fronts - good writing, fantastical ideas, excellent art, the whole nine yards. Everything currently out is up to issue two or three of four, so grab a couple of issue ones and see how you feel.

Speaking of Grant Morrison minis, he just finished up Vimanarama!, a three issue mini about a young Indian man living in London, his parents setting him up with an arranged marriage, and the incursion of terrible monsters and Hindi superheros into his life. It's a lovely series, so keep an eye out for back issues. Also, keep an eye out for the new collected edition of WE3, a jaw-dropping three issue mini about animals turned into cybernetic killing machines trying to get home. The story is entirely straightforward, but the structure of the comic - visuals as seen from the viewpoints of the animals - is astonishing. Very highly recommended.

So, yeah, show up with twenty or thirty dollars to drop and let us know what you wind up coming home with.

actually it will be going through all three superman titles and wonder woman.

bad news is that it looks like wonder woman is going to ship late.

worse news is that supposedly OMAC 4 will ship late also as a result (DC is expecting everyone who reads OMAC to read Sacrifice also).

good news is that the first part of Sacrifice was really really good. :)

DC is pissing me off, but going all crossover crazy with a story I actually like enough to want to read. Damnit, this is where I am supposed to be dropping books, not adding them!

OTOH, the recent Outsiders/Titans crossove and the Donna Troy return have me wanting to drop *all* those books, and I was reading them already.

Ah! I just realized that The Comics Journal #269 comes out tomorrow!

cover.jpg

I generally don't bother with TCJ, but this looks to be one helluva an issue. From the solicitation:

“Girls don’t like comics.” It was one of the hoariest clichés of the last 15 years in the American comics industry, but in the last three years, Japanese manga has exposed it for the lie it always was. Shoujo manga -- women’s comics -- have become the engine driving the Asian comics invasion, and have amassed a large and enthusiastic female following. The Comics Journal #269 is devoted to exploring and explaining the phenomenon.

Our cover interview spotlights pioneering shoujo cartoonist Moto Hagio, often called “the Osamu Tezuka of women’s manga,” who is renowned both for her psychologically challenging stories and as the originator of the “shonen-ai” (boy love) subgenre. Hagio was one of the ringleaders of the Magnificent 24-Year Group, a loose confederation of female manga creators who challenged the then-male-dominated shoujo industry in the early 1970s and left it utterly transformed. Scholar and translator Matt Thorn sits down for a long and fascinating conversation with Hagio (her first full-length interview ever), and also contributes an essay explaining who the 24-Year Group were and why their influence is still felt today. As if that weren’t enough, we also present the first-ever English translation of Hagio’s seminal short story “Hanshin,” which has been studied by Japanese scholars and even adapted into a Japanese theater production!

Also: Journalist Kai-Ming Cha traces the rise of shoujo as a market force in Asia and the United States; cartoonist Lea Hernandez explains how shoujo shaped her view of comics as an art form; cartoonist and historian Trina Robbins examines all-ages manga for girls; TCJ Managing Editor Dirk Deppey offers a theory as to why such boys’ manga titles as Chobits, Love Hina and Negima have developed such strong followings among female readers; Kristy Valenti looks at the growing popularity of yaoi and shonen-ai comics; and our critics review a wide array of shoujo titles for your edification. If you’re a Marvel executive trying to figure out how to break into the market, a retailer trying to make sense of the new paradigm in comics, or a reader wondering what all the fuss is about, you dare not miss this issue of America’s most respected magazine of comics news and criticism ... The Comics Journal!

I completely adore Moto Hagio and the thought of an extensive interview with her (led by Matt Thorn!) is enough to give me the funny tummy feeling. Alas, of the two manga by Hagio to be translated into English, only A, A' is still in print; "They Were 11" was printed as a four issue mini-series and collected in the Viz anthology Four Shoujo Stories. Still, if you're a SF or shoujo manga fan, these are well worth tracking down. Hell, they're worth digging up even if you aren't a fan.

NEW AVENGERS #7
ULTIMATE X-MEN #61
X-MEN THE END HEROES AND MARTYRS #5 (OF 6)

Brutal week for me. I don't get paid until Thursday, so some of the books might sell out by then. My local Newbury Comics is starting a subscription service finally, so I won't have to worry about sellouts anymore.

I'm picking up Desolation Jones on your recommendations, and while we're pimping books, I recommend the Surrogates. I read about it in Wizard last week and picked it up, and I fucking loved it. the series takes place in a world where 92% of the US population lives through Surrogates, pretty much replacement bodies that you customize to your liking, and control while your real body is "asleep" (can't think of the proper term right now). A serial killer is on the loose, targeting surrogates exclusively through his own customized surrogate. It seems like the Surrogate serial killer isn't happy with people basically living through something else and has taken it on himself to do something about it. I found the first issue, but I'm not entirely sure if more have been released. Its a 5 issue miniseries.

:D

As for Wanted... DONT FUCKING BOTHER. The last part of the story is terrible... such a weak finish to a great mini.

It's almost like Millar knew where he wanted to go with it, but had no idea how to finish it. I even asked JG Jones (at Pitts Comicon) about WTF happened to the last issue. HE said simply. "Eh, Mark just sent me the script.... bright side is that book helped finish my kitchen floor. I just think he had to end it SOMEHOW with it being so late"

A few general points:

Walking Dead is absolutely fantastic, probably the best book you're not buying. See also Invincible.

Desolation Jones wasn't too interesting, and given that Ellis' stuff of late doesn't seem to arrive particularly quickly is one for a possible trade in 2010. See also Planetary, Iron Man & Ultimate Delay.

The end of Wanted was rather poor, but Millar suffers from Couplanditis in that he cannot end a book satisfactorily. See also Chosen.

I've read Return of Donna Troy Parts 1 & 2 several times, and cannot absorb any information from them. I still don't know what's going on.

I know; Wonder Woman #219 is "Sacrifice," part 4. But what I'm saying is that WW #218, shipping this week, is also related to the Crisis and could very well be an indirect prelude to the "Sacrifice" crossover in next issue. Here's the solicit info:

The events of COUNTDOWN begin to bear down on the Amazon Princess as the IDENTITY CRISIS art team of Rags Morales and Michael Bair continues its run on WONDER WOMAN! The Amazon Warrior has returned from the Underworld, seemingly triumphant in her mission for Athena…but a lot has changed in her absence. A new challenge is drawing near, and Wonder Woman's response will shake the DCU to its core!
That would make it worth picking up, yes?

How many times have we heard this before "shake the DCU to its core!"?

I'll just save 2 bucks and let someone spoil the big shocking event that will absolutely change the DC universe for 2 panels.

Alright, well, I picked up these today.

34388_ful.jpg

34304_ful.jpg

34371_ful.jpg

Also grabbed #1 and #2 of Seven Soldiers. Desolation Jones meanwhile was sold out. Going to have to grab that at another comic book shop. Grabbed a Batman and Robin cover, as they had both too. Going off to read them now so I'll give you my thoughts later.

grabbed

Hawkman - this series is just really fucking great right now. If you want classic superhero action on par with JSA or Waid FF, this NEEDS to be in your stack every month

Action Comics - uggh.. great concept, horrible execution. both parts now have just been a chore to wade through. I do it though because like I said, I love the concept. hopefully adventure will be easier to read next week.

Ultimate FF - haven't read it yet, and really starting to not like Land's art.

Ultimate X-Men - haven't read it yet.

Desolation Jones - picked up number one also. You fuckers better not have made me waste $6. :P (but seriously)

Fables - so we still don't know who the adversary is????? arggh.. I thought that was this month.

New Avengers - the end was.. mehh...

Batman - haven't read yet

Serenity - Haven't read yet. Is this just the movie adaption?

Rann Thangar War - haven't read yet but can't wait to. second favorite Infinite Crisis mini.

umm. might be some other stuff but can't think of it off the top of my head.

Left my Batman & Robin thoughts in the hype thread. Anyway

Manhattan Guardian #1-3 - Very good. I really liked this series, and it got me interested in the rest of the seven soldiers. Guardians a good character but if they could get together a team of well developed characters, some more interesting than Guardian even, it could get really cool. I was trying to find designs of each soldier, and though I didn't, Shining Knight looks really bad ass from the few I seen. Nice art in this series also. All of em having different artists, hopefully the rest are just as good or better. Good read.

New Avengers #7 - So this started out really cool but It's lacking a little something. I was excited thinking how great this collaboration was but none were getting fleshed out in the story. To be expected I guess, with one issue and a team of super heroes. Still, it wasn't too thought provoking. Had the villain, the heroes, the hostage. Not bad. It was fun. But not a must have either. Oh, and The Sentry really didn't hook you. Wasn't too involved in the story.

When I went to my LCS today to pick up ASB&RTBY, I decided to pick up Seven Soldiers #0, Seven Soldiers: The Guardian #1, and Seven Soldiers: Zatanna #1. WOW. Suffice it to say, I was thoroughly blown away by all three books. Can't wait to go back to pick up Guardian #2-3, Zatanna #2, Klarion, The Witch Boy #1-2, and Shining Knight #1-3. Definately going to be following this event.

so in regards to action comics #829
dragging on... so bats gets the stuffing knocked out of him. i'm starting to get an idea about infinite crisis.
batman will be out of commission, wonder woman and superman will be at odds (after having fought) the OMAC robots are gonna be coming after all the super-heroes, as well as the villains (luthor's society) the villains united are gonna try and save the day (maybe?) and the rann-thanagar war is probably gonna spill to earth in the future
(and a beloved character is gonna come back, my guess is it's valor) and let's not forget the spectre.
bottom line, the heroes lose (in my opinion) the USA goes to war with the amazons and that's when all hell breaks loose. that's my opnion anyways, not that anyone has come up with anything so far.

...Is it just me, or was AC #829 a complete and total waste? I mean, it's just
Superman recalling his beatdown of Batman, only now he thinks Bruce was Darkseid, whereas before he thought Bruce was Brainiac.
I mean, instead of rehashing Superman #219 from a new angle, why not just have Clark attack someone else before the big reveal?

Filler. o_O

JLA #116 was awesome, though. :D
