It actually didn't take that much to combine all three series. I would be more impressed if they hadn't had so many frigging plot holes.
Actually, it's amazing they didn't end up with more. Steve Kramer, who worked on Robotech (as well as being a VA), at AX said that when they did it, they tried to do the story linear, but due to problemsand issues that lasted all of a few minutes. Robotech was actually dubbed and written out of sequence(were talking all 85 episodes here!), with a few people trying to keep track of everything. There were stories of people literally sleeping in the offices doing all of this.
Plot holes?! WHAT PLOT HOLES.?!
... no really, I've forgotten, and would like to know.
Some problems, such as the whole SDF-2 thing(which was obvious), other problems when they actually translated correctly from the original source material but it wasn't right for 'Robotech'.
However, with this it didn't really effect the whole story overall, and usually the ones who have the biggest issues and arguments over it tend to be either 1)Robotech's detractors(usually the real vocal ones), or 2)the hardcore fan which will go over every episode with a fine tooth comb to get every detail and piece it together.
Besides, look at all the plotholes in G1 Transformers and most of us still love it!
I'm all about mindlessly wanking to Max awesomeness.
Hey, Max in either version is awesome!
Though you may have to wait a bit to see it in Macross 7. Milia, however, is shown kicking ass much earlier as well as doing in her VF - 1! That scene actually kept me watching 7, as I was close to dropping it at that point.
The fact that Robotech has lasted this long that, despite some issues with plotholes, it really shows just how well it was written, as well as the idea's behind it turning it into this multigenerational epic that it was. Hell, if it weren't there wouldn't have been so many fans keeping it alive in some form or another these past twenty years. We quite can't say the same for such other shows, such as Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors.
Macross is an awesome universe in it's own right, and will continue onward, but it can't be said that Robotech isn't it's own entity with it's own life now.
If there's anything that's going to hurt, it's going to be our wallets going after both.
