Somebody help me out, what's (MR) in the previews mean? The stuff with that on it seems like stuff that doesn't actually come out this week, like AmVam 25 was last week and IZombie looks like it comes in May from the Vertigo site...

Just in case anybody had forgotten DC's new website sucks an insatiable amount of ass...

EDIT: "MR" is usually "mature readers" in Diamond solicits.

Ah, thanks that makes sense. You have any idea why it looks like some of that list I pulled off the previews site are for books that I don't see DC showing as coming out this week? I dunno where Satch pulls her list from but Previews doesn't seem like the most accurate.

Nothing from your post stands out to me as being incorrect? Previews should be the most accurate and simplified source on what's available from DC each week, especially by noon on Mondays barring a holiday.

The one that immediately jumps out is American Vampire 25 which I bought last week.

Whatever though, it's really no big deal. I'll leave it in there and hopefully someone will buy it twice. :)

Very big week for me

AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #1 (OF 12) - Well, this is it! After months of build-up, the big summer event finally begins, and...I already read this issue! Thank you, LCS I'm not saying outloud! It was surprisingly good, shows a lot of promise, has great artwork, and Bendis won't be writing the next half dozen issues, so I'm feeling really positive about this so far! Can't wait til everybody gets their hands on it this week so we can talk about it, that's really half the fun of these events. We do have an AvX thread, right? I liked the Schism one last year.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #683 - I'm kinda LOL about that new Spidey outfit, but this issue promises Spidey and the Avengers fighting the Sinister Six, with Stefano Casselli on artwork. It was like it was made just for me.

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #8 - This is still one of Marvel's best books, and I expect the same kind of balance between strong character work and comic book wackiness the series has provided so far. And did I mention Bachalo is back!? Because that's kinda important.

DAREDEVIL #10.1 - I'm not a big fan of the Khoi Pham artwork for this, but he's only drawing two issues, so eh. We get an issue with Daredevil every week this month, so I hope you guys picking this up plan on getting Avenging Spider-Man and Punisher this month as well, it's a small crossover story between the three. Got a great creative team though, so it should be pretty fun.

VENOM #15 - As much I enjoyed the Tony Moore-drawn insanity of Hell taking over Las Vegas, it's nice to get back to the main storyline Remender was doing. There's something about following a character from the very beginning, to have read all his issues, from the main series here, Secret Avengers, and his appearances in Carnage USA. I'm just that much more invested in Flash and his strange, disturbing relationship with Venom, and how it effects him and his loved ones. There's a lot of ideas and characters Remender has been building with in the year or so he's been on the book, and it's all about to explode in the "Savage Six" story arc coming soon, but this seems to be the calm before the storm. A good jumping on point, if you're interested, I imagine.

CASANOVA: AVARITIA #3 (OF 4) - I think it's been a couple months since the last issue, but I really don't seem to mind. Every issue of Casanova is almost always the best book of the month, you can't rush genius, baby. This really may be the best volume of Casanova yet. It's so clearly auto-biographical for Fraction, he pours himself into every page, but it's so much more then that, too. It's cool, it's funny, it's weird, it's brilliant, it's pop comics.

FLEX MENTALLO: MAN OF MUSCLE MYSTERY – THE DELUXE EDITION HC - Oh. My. GOD.

FINALLY.

I WILL OWN THIS AND CHERISH IT FOREVER.

Flash by Geoff Johns Omnibus vol. 2 is really tempting. I wish it included Ignition, because I really don't care to buy the rest of his run after that. I think this is really some of the best Flash comics around. Breezy, accessible, fun superhero comics.

Waiting to get it from Amazon (I know...) but Flex Mentallo is a must-buy. Possibly Morrison's crowning achievement, and a masterpiece of the form.

Whispers 2 is definitely on my list for this week.

Christ! I picked up Orc Stain #7 and hate myself for not picking up the trade when it was available. Anyone know of a website that still has them in stock?

I don't know how they are but found this.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot.
Just wondering, did you end up ordering? I might order it myself since I've not been able to find a copy at any of the shops here.

Bendis is writing a guide to comics writing for Random House. It's called Words for Pictures: The Art and Business of Graphic Novels and will be out in 2013.

As a way to pay his A-list success forward, Bendis began teaching a graphic-novel writing course Portland State University. Editors at Random House heard of his teachings and approached him to write a book.

Bendis says he hears from many aspiring wordsmiths looking for information and advice, and “it would be nice to just hand them a book and go ‘Here is everything I would tell you if we were hanging out.’”

But don’t call it a how-to book. Bendis is quick to point out he wants to avoid the “How to Write Like Me” book. For one, he explains that unlike film and television, which demand a certain format, there is no universal format to comic-book writing.

At one extreme, for example, there is the so-called Marvel Style, the classic technique of handing a plot to an artist, who interprets as he sees fit and in effect can co-write the story before submitting his drawn pages back to the writer. On the opposite side of the spectrum are the legendary pages from Alan Moore, detailed to the point of being obsessive-compulsive. (One produced Fantastic Four and The Avengers, the other Watchmen and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Who is to say which one is correct?)

Bendis’ aim is to explain the many theories and techniques, including the ones he and his writer colleagues use (he wants the book to have many voices), tally up pros and cons, and let readers/prospective writers choose what suits them.

There will also be a focus on how to set up a corporation and how to guard your writing. “We read in the paper every week someone did something wrong, someone didn’t sign something, someone didn’t protect themselves,” he says. “Every minute there are more and more platforms in which you can succeed and get ripped off. You need to protect yourself.”

Ive been told his class at PSU is pretty fun, so while it may not be on the level of McCloud's work, it could be a great supplemental to those books

Is anyone still reading Red Lanterns? I can't believe that in #7
They killed off Atrocitus. He was the only that series had going for it besides dex-starr.

Preview of "the fight comic" AvX Versus #1, now with word balloons and such (Comic Book Resources)

Opposing characters trading quips and punches for the entire book? Keeping the tone light, and leaving the heavy stuff to the main series?

...

Okay. That may actually work. :)

EDIT: "MR" is usually "mature readers" in Diamond solicits.

Disappointed with the Match-up. Out of all the X-Men, the book paired the two Avengers with someone in their "rogue gallery."

It's funny, when I got out of buying comics weekly about 7 years ago, we all loved Bendis and Morrison. And now it seems like a lot of readers have turned on them.

Incidentally, I've been using Comixology to catch up on Morrison's Batman run. Seems like most people here didn't like that stuff, but man I'm finding it to be ridiculously fun and addictive. So big, bold, and colorful. I'll probably keep going all the way up through RIP.

Morrison's Batman is one of the few things I keep reading from DC. After RIP, make sure you check out Batman and Robin #1-16, and then Batman Inc.

7 years ago, Bendis was doing Daredevil. Now, he's writing some pretty meh avengers. The only thing that has been constant is Ultimate Spider-Man, which will go down in my top 5 for sure.

Sweet! B&R 1-15 were part of the Joker sale so I picked them up for 99 cents apiece. I've got enough Morrison to last me through the summer now.

So apparently he's not so good writing the team stuff? Oh, and what's Warren Ellis up to these days?

You know what, that is true. The most characters he can write successfully is like 5. But man, when Bendis is on, he's freaking on. Civil War: The Confession is still the only good thing to come out of Civil War.

Ellis is off doing random indie stuff. He pretty much does whatever he wants nowadays after finishing up his run on Secret Avengers, which had some amazing issues

My major problem with Bendis' Avengers work (other than his habit of butchering character personalities and speech patterns in favour of Bendis Banter) is that he rarely finishes anything he starts. Constant line-wide crossovers don't help, but almost every plot in New Avengers just fizzled out or concluded with a completely unsatisfactory ending. Hell, did they ever resolve the Raft breakout plot that started the book? If so, it was dragged out and overshadowed so long that I missed it.

I've done fucked up. New to comics, got hooked on the appeal of digital comics on mobile devices, first my Fire, now my iPad. This past week I decided to jump into Marvel, particularly Iron Man as he's always kinda interested me and I figured I'd dip my toe with him.

After reading through Extremis i told myself to just get the unlimited subscription and stop spending, but I figured I'd take it slow so it wasn't a problem...... yeah, let's just say that didn't happen.

Oh well, at least I haven't hit MtG levels yet. Didn't think I'd get so hooked.

I saw a cover for Red Lanterns a couple days ago and was shocked they're still putting that book out.

Still too goddamn many Green Lantern books.

Oh, and what's Warren Ellis up to these days?

Ellis is writing some novels. A few weeks ago he said that he had finished his last scheduled comic project. So unless it's changed, he's not actively working on anything comics related.

Marvel digital comics unlimited is a good buy if you are new to comics. Get that and then set yourself a modest budget for new comics and you will be fine.

I buy a lot of comics and i still find things to read in MDCU, though if i DIDN"T buy a lot of comics the value would be even greater. Currently reading through Ultimate Cmoics X Origins miniseries on MDCU, it's okay.

ALMOST done with Spider Island OHC finally, just Venom #9 tie-in to go. It's kind of sad that out of all the ASM issues, only the Epilogue was good. Really disliked the rest apart from a few good pages here and there, I hope Ends of the Earth is nothing like this.

Speaking of bendis i can't believe simonson is drawing for that bum. brah is just going to fill up the pages with word bubbles anyways.

Thanks! I'm loving it. I wasn't sure how to dive into the Marvel Universe, so I just kinda picked a character I really liked, researched for a good starting point and just dived in. Really enjoying things, reading through Civil War now, then I think I'll go back to Demon in a Bottle/Armor Wars then back to Invincible and slowly get caught up.

But yeah, I think it's time to start a budget, lol.
