Blade 3 is like some Dracula 2000 fanfic yo.

Blade 3 is worse in light of the third Blade movie Del Toro wanted to make. >:|

Speaking of fanfic. I want my Ghost Rider / Blade team up movie so bad! That would be more hype than Avengers!

Trailer opens with Nic Cage and segues into Ghost Rider fighting some bad ass dudes. Turns out the bad ass dudes are VAMPIRES! BAM! Cut to Wesley Snipes jumping in and killing them. End trailer.

Midnight Sons: Ghost Rider / Blade

Ropey strands of baby gravy go flying everywhere.

Bring back Neveldine & Taylor.

You can't lose.

You can't!

More hype for who? And while you're at it, why not do a midnight sons movie? There's a werewolf and vampire on the lineup after all.

Why would you not have seen this in theaters?

Last time I saw a movie in a theater was Inception and it will be my last, forever. Almost broke my pact to see Dredd but wised up and skipped it. The turnaround time to DVD is too small and theaters come with way too many caveats. I simply don't need them in my life anymore.

Not allowing myself to feel pressure from friends or the internet to be a part of Nerd Film zeitgeist anymore really helps too. I've realized that all comic movies and genre films are the same formulaic crap now and waiting 6 months for them to come out on DVD is so much less of a hassle than it was back when they were fresh and novel and deserving of being discussed and analyzed.

And you know what else? After waiting five months to finally see Avengers I couldn't be happier that I didn't spend $25 to see it in a packed auditorium with overpriced popcorn because it was fucking boring and shitty just like every other popular, nerd-pandering piece of shit that has hit the theaters in the last decade.

I cannot even fathom a boring, badly paced scene in Avengers. Huh.

It was the closest thing to a comic on the screen, well ever.

The theater phobia, the pressure, the "nerd film zeitgeist", nerd-pandering, etc make me feel like you're getting kinda bitter. :(

Relax and try to stop examining things so closely. It's the path to being jaded, and a bit odd. I guess after seeing you on GAF for ages, I don't wish this for you.

not a fan of what happened to alpha,

also dread was great when it was called the raid:redemption

This is a legitimate concern for me.

I enjoyed The Raid when I saw it in theaters.

The superficial similarities are obvious, but I'm not at all expecting amazing physical combat out of Dredd.

Outside of the whole climbing up to get the bad guy thing it is very different.

I hope it's still in theaters next week. I'll be free to take an extended lunch next Friday. By some pure dumb luck I got to see War Zone in January when it was at only one place in NYC.

Dude try your best to watch it.

wut

also, Blade Trinity>Blade 2

sup haters.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

If there is one movie you must see in theater is is Dredd.

So, I have a new tablet, and besides manga and videos, I want to make an attempt at comics.

The issue being that I am pretty biased against them from the getgo for many of the standard reasons that get brought up on GAF from time to time.

  • No idea where to start
  • Never ending series
  • Reboots
  • Crossovers
  • Multiple books
  • Boring powersets (whether too generic flight/strength/beams, or just too overpowered that it becomes stupid (The Flash, The Hulk, Superman))
  • General lack of creativity in combat scenarios (energy vs energy, strength vs strength, generally when two people whose abilities aren't really different from each other see who's better at doing the same thing)
  • Characters being inconsistent due to changing writers/artists
However, I want to be open minded and give them a shot. I specifically want things featuring characters with special abilities combating each other. Despite the issues above, I'm open to mainstream/superheroes, and anything that has those "problems" in it. Looking for stuff that's so good it would change my mind and make me able to look past the things I don't like about the mainstream US comic industry.

For a starting point, Batman, Flash, and Green Lantern all seem like they could be really well, if a single artist/author wrote them as a story with a beginning and end and had a good amount of creativity with their abilities and strategies in action.

Sorry if I upset anyone with all my stereotypical, tired, non comic reader complaints, but I'm hoping you can manage to convert me.

It's hard to know where to begin, but have you considered checking some out at the library first?

Short of that, the latest Batman series from DC and Scott Snyder is a pretty safe bet. Issues 1-12 are out plus a zero issue that goes back in time a bit. Read zero after #12. Same writer/artist throughout, with an extremely focus, well plotted storyline.

Also, if you grab the ComiXology app on your tab, each publisher has various free issues to try out so you can get a broad sampling.

Annual too!

If it's a one writer show you're looking for, Geoff Johns has been overseeing Green Lantern and that character's corner of the DC Universe since 04. I read everything starting with "Green Lantern: Rebirth". If you like that, then I suggest reading till the end of the Sinestro Corps. War event. Only books to read here are "Green Lantern" 1-25 (main book with Hal Jordan) and "Green Lantern Corps." 1-19 (team book starring other members of the GL Corps). This is all the Green Lantern I've read, so I can't comment on what comes after.

Flash? No idea. Lol. And Kryp has already said Synder's Batman, which is easily to get into and great. Also, Batman has a ton of graphic novels you can read on their own (Year One. The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke, etc.)

Even though it had 2 of the worst comic panels I've seen all year, Batman INC referencing fucking Dangermouse was the highlight of the week XD

Slott totally whiffed on ASM's Alpha arc. I'm beginning to think he's lost the ability to close like Spider-Island. Both End of the Earth and this just completely dribbled to the finish line.

I will let you have your Allred terribleness fun this week, WatXM, but by fuck you need to get back to being on your own track sans AvsX spin-off filler season.

Was nice to have a non-Dragotta fucked FF this week too though!

Anyone reading Happy besides me? First issue was cool.

Agreed. I mostly read superhero books, so it was nice to get a more adult title. The art was fantastic too. I like that it's only a four issue series, apparently so does Grant Morrison. If he's done writing regular monthly books for a while and we get stuff like this, I'm all for that.

Superman #0 was great and not boring at all! The writing and pacing made it feel like a much longer comic. I hope this team continues the level of quality, I'll keep picking up Superman for sure.

Batman Inc. #0
I love that this issues takes place in the middle of (pre-new52) Batman and Robin #16, which is one of my favorite single issues ever. Also the fact that Frazier Irving was one of the artists on that issue, it seems to fit all the better.

Had do drop a couple titles.
Batgirl: I like Gail Simone and Barbara's character but I see the next few months are tie-in issues and it seems like they are having guest stars show up too often, Catwoman, Batwoman. I'm torn though, because I want to see what happens to James Jr.

Suicide Squad: Again, they are tying this into Death of the Family and it seems like Waller has been getting more screen time. I don't care about her, I want to see the Squad! Issue 0 should have been all about Deadshot.
And I really wanted her mutant friend at the end of Issue #0 to be turned into King Shark! Missed opportunity.

Aquaman: I will probably drop this once The Others arc is over. It's been great but I think it'll be a good end point, and I just need to cut back.

Frankenstein: Rumor is this will be getting cut after the Rot World tie-ins. Which sucks because I love this book.

Action Comics: I'll be dropping this when Morrison leaves after issue 16. It's $3.99 and I don't care for back-ups usually.

For a starting point, Batman, Flash, and Green Lantern all seem like they could be really well, if a single artist/author wrote them as a story with a beginning and end and had a good amount of creativity with their abilities and strategies in action.
For Flash, I would just start with the New 52 series by Frances Manapul & Brian Buccellato. You get a great idea of who The Flash is and you're not bogged down by old continuity.

Can anyone tell me what I need to buy to store and take care of issues I buy? I normally buy comics on Comixology or I buy trades. I picked up Hawkeye #1 a week ago and want to start buying more issues. What else do I need besides the long boxes?
Depends on how you want to organize. You can get polly bags and acid free boards, sometimes they are sold bundled together. Make sure you get the right size, it'll say "for modern size comics" or something like that. I was doing that for a while but it's a pain when re-reading to take it out of the bag every time. I find that just storing them in a long box is good enough for me, but bagged and boarded will keep the condition a lot better.

You sound bitter and salty as hell. Take a deep breath.

Not bitter or salty and breathing just fine, thanks.

This ASM Alpha arc was terrible. I think it's the only major misstep from Slott since I started reading. Question: How long has Aunt May not known Peter was Spiderman? I read Civil War and she knew then, but I skipped all the stuff between that and Spider Island. Was it during that stupid event that everybody hates where Peter and MJ got unmarried?

Yes and imo ASM hasn't recovered after all that jazz. Even though there have been interesting changes, most of Slott's run has unfortunately been kinda boring for me..

There was some crap story during Slott's run that explained why everyone forgot Peter was Spider-Man, including some Dr Strange, Reed, and Stark brain-tank and I guess this included May forgetting too. To make things more confusing, in other comics such as a recent Avenging Spider-Man, its been strongly hinted at that May knows anyway. Meaning a fucking dead-look into her eyes bold speech bubble "I KNOW, PETER." I think she should pretty much just know and it be an unspoken thing, its a boring plot device of "unknowing Aunt" that was written out in the fucking 90's, thats how old it is.

Slott has been hyping his 700th now with that troll swagger of "haha they'll hate me" but his run since Spider-Island hasn't earned him that safe card he seems to think he's carrying. EotE and Alpha were terrible, I'm not convinced this Goblin War is going to be up to snuff, and fuck knows what he's going to do for that BIG SHOCK.

Does anyone else get a marvel bankrupcy era vibe from the nu52? Like someone from warner bros told everyone at dc that they had a year to fix their crap or they were all getting fired.

I've said before, but Nu52 REEKS of Heroes Reborn. All right artistically its not the ALL LIEFELD show, but so much about it reads of panic, confusion, a wish to reboot but without rebooting everything and all sorts of cake and eating of. DC should have just started their own Ultimate line called Ultra or something. I only read the Batbooks anyway, but now I'm down solely to INC due to Morrison's "fuck you, my book" swagger.

Ok, thanks for the heads up. I didn't think EotE was as bad as some but it certainly didn't live up to what they were billing it as, which was this year's Spidey event. It was just a pretty run of the mill bad guy arc.

LOL Japanese Comics Vs. American Comics!

What are some of your favorite Japanese comics, that would help us guide you.

One artist, one writer. 20+ years.

Chances are you'll want to stick with creator owned, independent comics to filter out all the horse shit that goes on in mainstream comics.

If you're not going to be a thin skinned baby about it, then you can isolate runs from mainstream comics (e.g. Simonson on Thor), read that and then GTFO. It's not impossible for writers and artists who care and want to do the best they can on a character to come along and contribute to a character. Just leave when they're done.

Garth Ennis's Punisher
Larry Hama's Spooks

YES!

We need more Spooks god damn it! >:O

I was so mad when I asked Josh Blaylock about the future of the series and he just looked at me baffled. Yes Josh, nobody gives a shit about Mercy Sparks. We want more Spooks! >:|
Dear god yes it was such a great concept and done right. I love the Arlington firefight and ending. I really like Hama's GI Joe and Barack thr Barbarian is pretty funny.

This is why I want to meet Larry Hama. If the publisher doesn't have answers, perhaps the creator will.
Larry is on Facebook and regularly answers questions.

Man I just don't know how you misstep Alpha and make it boring. It's kind of like how Kirkman has made a story involving zombies completely dull and lifeless.

Whenever someone says to me "I want to check out American comics, but..." my blanket recommendation is always Runaways volume 1 & 2. Powers, relatable teen issues, BKV dialog and no obtuse continuity. It's probably the most accessible gateway comic I can think of without getting into continuity heavy, mainstream, superhero stuff, or ignoring superpowers.

ARRRRGH!

I don't want to join Facebook. >:(

There's an artist on there that owes me a piece of artwork and I can't be bothered to join. :P

Even more ironic considering it was spawned out of Mehvel's weeaboo cash-grab line. Only problem for a manga reader would be inconsistent art. Guess Mehvel's editors weren't paying attention to that when they plotted the line. :X

I don't remember how many artists all got their mitts on those first two volumes but I don't think anybody that reads manga will have a problem with Alphona or Miyazawa, and IIRC Miyazawa's stuff is all contained to arcs.

Preacher just sprung to mind. Ennis and Dillon for the whole damned run. :3

Speaking of weeaboo comics - Gold Digger! Fred Perry's been doing it for 20+ years and has his finger on the pulse of anime, video game, manga fans.

If I liked manga (and thank God I don't) I would probably really like Gold Digger, even though Perry's art is a pretty roughshod facsimile of even a low tier doujinshi.

*cough* AHEM, Final Fantasy 11 features hot CAT chicks, thank you very much... The rabbit chicks were from FF12.

All those Final Fantasy games look the same to me. Sorry. :X

Why don't you like Japanese comics?!

Go read Yotsuba you jerk! If you don't like Yotsuba, you're a spree shooter and you just don't know it yet.

Shortest answer I can muster is "I went through a phase..."

Longer answer, back when I first discovered fansubs (maybe ca. 2002-2003) I consumed anime and/or manga every single day for about a full year while unemployed. I pretty much watched every single show that came out in Japan regardless of genre, and rented every single anime DVD they had at Blockbuster. It only took that one year before I realized that every show coming out was a near verbatim carbon copy of something I'd already seen. Mostly though I just got very jaded by Japanese culture and stopped consuming almost everything from the country, including Japanese videogames for the most part.

I've still managed to retain some fondness for a few of my old favorites like GTO, Azumanga Daioh (and yeah the bit of Yotsuba I read, which was actually the first "scanlation" I discovered) and I've still got the full run of GTO manga in a box in my basement as well as the first year's worth of US Shonen Jump (which I've only read about half of), but I just can't do it anymore. I find it hard to stomach typical Japanese weirdness and anime tropes and the few times I've asked friends to recommend a unique anime for me to check out to see if I'm missing anything I've never made it more than a few episodes in before I couldn't take it anymore.

Oh well, that's the thing.

There's a lot of crap.

Since Japan makes more comics than we do, they make even MORE crap.

You just need to ignore the crap coming out of Shonen Junk and find the gems. Sadly that stuff is greatly reduced since the Western manga market crashed. Now I hope you love mindless shonen power creep garbage like Naruto and Bleach. BARRRRF!

I would read more scanlations, except for the whole computer thing. . . Can't read it on the toilet. :|

Real Magna Talk Time

Only Magna that I would possibly suggest reading is Black Lagoon. At least that is about good values that we all hold dear: Guns, Violence, Crime, a fuckton of explosions and good characters and dialogue that isn't about someones waifu or some high school girls life.

LOL LOL LOL

I still wish someone would release all of Fist of the North Star manga here. :( :( :(

Or any new Ryoichi Ikegami stuff.

You know, MANS manga. Man.

Plus Rei Mikamoto - always tits and zombies. Always. :3

Or anything by Kazuo Koike because I haven't had the chance to read anything new by him and ask, "What the f*ck is wrong with you man?! Why is everybody pissing on everybody?!"
