I'm also looking forward to finally having a good writer write Rogue (my favorite x-character).

I think having her as the "OOH UNSURE OF WHETHER WE TRUST HER" character is some remarkably clumsy writing on Remender's part in Uncanny Avengers. The hood for added mystique (i c wut) also grates a little bit.

I did find it a pity she was walled off in all those other X-books I never touch, and didnt interact with any of the WatXM school stuff, same with plenty of other characters. Having Storm as a teacher now makes infinite more sense than being on Scott's team now for instance.

Yeah, I really hope that Remender is (for some reason) exaggerating that aspect in interviews. She was a villain for, what, two years of publishing time?

What in the hell? Mike Carey wrote her for 5 or 6 years. I was in heaven.

Best Rogue writer since Claremont. Legendary.

:D

...

Please don't put her back in X-Force. >:O

I agree. She is horrible at avengers academy right now, too. She needs to be anywhere that allows her to be a normal kid so it can conflict with everything about her that doesn't let her just be a normal kid.

Making her a straight up supehero is the wrong way to deal with the character, imo.

Amelia Cole and the Unknown World #1 from monkeybrain comics was fun. Makes up for Zatanna not having her own book right now...barely.

Lol, Legion. He had maybe 2 or 3 good stories since the 80s - and he wasn't even the main character in them - and somehow he can now be the lead on a book.

It also sucks that Avengers seemed to have poached all the most boring X-dudes. Havok, Sunspot and Cannonball are the ones you really wanted to take? Smh.

Writer not character. The character is just a puppet the writer tells a story through. So who cares if the character is an also-ran, the writer might have an interesting framework for the story.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of Amazing Spiderman trades in chronological order? I'm going through and reserving titles on my library's online catalog but some listings don't include issue numbers.

The first thing from Carey that I had ever read was The Unwritten. It was so good I just had to read everything of his, from Lucifer to Xmen Legacy. So good.

Bachalo couldn't have colored that since there is more than 2 colors in the panel. Maybe I will check it out.

TTOb brah, what do I need other than a positive attitude and creativity to learn how to draw? Booster kit ideas?

You can trace / copy from artists you enjoy starting out. Plus if you keep at it you can be a Gardenburger motherfucker like Roger Cruz or Nick Bradshaw and make a career of it!

But seriously, tracing / copying is basically art with training wheels. A good way to start and even Ivan Reis suggests it starting out. Just bring your own flavor to it, like Bryan Hitch (Gardenburger Motherfucking Alan Davis) and Mike Deodato (Gardenburger Motherfucking Jim Lee).

How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way is a great primer on the ABC's of comic illustration. It still hasn't really been topped IMO.

Andrew Loomis's books are back in print and they're the go to figure drawing instruction out there. Figure Drawing For All It's Worth is a fantastic book to start with. It covers perspective, composition, and tons and tons of important art shit. Titan Books has reprinted a couple of his other books as well if you want to delve deeper.

There's also figure drawing books from Bridgeman and Hogarth, although arteests generally poopoo the Hogarth stuff.

For inking How to Pen & Ink from DMP is fantastic. It features inking tool drills to build your skills, daily practice lessons, and a very in depth explanation of comic book inking from our friends in the Far East.

For video education The Doug Mahnke Style of Comic Book Pencilling is a grade A no nonsense tutorial on drawing a full comic page from scratch.

These four things will set you in the right direction for drawing comics on your own.

The I Draw Comics Kickstarter looks neat, and I love Ryan Stegman's art - but I noticed they suggest Christopher Hart How To books in their recommended reading. For that alone I cannot endorse that volume. Christopher Hart isn't even a Gardenburger Motherfucker! He's just a plain hack. :X

Battle Beasts from IDW is crazy! Anybody else remember the toys? It's that only crazy!

Picked up The Black Kiss 2 today. If Howard Chaykin is going to push the boundaries of what comics can do, then I gotta back him. Go Howard, go!

Time to eat dinner and hit the sack. Lost three hours in a random visit from a friend and now I'm behind on the drawing gig. D:

Oh, and if anybody can find Planetoid #2 from Image for me I'll draw you a sketch card. Your choice of comic book character.

Hawkeye #2 was really good. Can't believe how great Fraction can be on some characters when he falls flat elsewhere.

I'm usually not a fan of styles similar to Aja's either, but I'm loving it. Surprisingly enjoying Gambit as well. I think I just plain enjoy cape thief/spy-y style stories.

Carey made Rogue interesting again by stripping her powers/personas. Claremont's schizo Rogue was freaking annoying with all her angst.

No way, it was great. I like when Carol Danvers took over her body and redesigned her bedroom, then Rogue tore down the whole house, screaming and crying. Rogue was such a mess, but I loved it.

What New 52 are getting cancelled next? I have heard rumors and the only one I can find to be truly cancelled is JLI (Thank GOD that comic sucked so bad.)

Thanks for the insight Bandit! Loved the first issue of Sullivan's Sluggers, great art and enough comedy to make me come back. Definitely digital only that and Edison Rex and Amelia Cole.

Okay, Battle Beasts is my new shit. Plus Mehvel Zombies can get a preview of the mad skills of the artist Mehvel poached to draw Journey into Mystery.

The only thing that could top this would be a crazy good new Crystar comic! :O

Not sure how I feel about Guardians of the Globe. I like Phil Hester and Todd Nauck, but even without Kirkman writing the book, I'm not really hooked by any of these Kirkman characters. Kirkman is a Gardenburger Erik Larsen. :|

To any other freeloaders who read free comics from public libraries, how's your local library's graphic novel collection?

Yes, despite getting comics for free with my hard earned tax dollars, I still have some complaints.

I hate the way that, in trying to appeal to the chain bookstore crowd, libraries have made these segregated "teen lounges". Well actually, I like that they round those kids up and keep them away from me but please, don't keep your damn comics in there!

I've been going to a library that has a pretty good collection, your usual staples are there of course (Watchmen, Maus, TDKR, etc.), but there's also a lot of variety and for the most part, it has served me well. One day though, I ventured into the Teen Lounge after I couldn't find a particular book in the graphic novel shelf and lo and behold, a whole damn wall of comics from floor to ceiling. Seriously, it was like 5 times as many comics as what I previously believed was the motherload. I could spend hours pouring over those shelves and flipping through books to find what I'd like to check out, which is a lot better then navigating their awful electronic catalog. Then I realized where I was.

Seriously, there's glass walls so everyone can see my grown-ass down on all fours, hunting for some Hulk comics. There are PSA posters of tween celebrities all over the room, "crazy" colored furniture, and usually a bunch of kids hanging out and doing their homework. Thankfully, I was there during school hours.

Another time, I was looking for a Scott McCloud book (Making Comics) which led me to this other Teen Room, some closed off study area I guess. There was a sign next to the door that said, "After 1pm this room is reserved for Teens only". I thought wtf!? So if I was here a few hours later I'd be shit outta luck? Why have shelves with books in there? So I walk in, there's teen mags all over and of course there's a group of young girls in there and it's fucking awkward. I make the slip of paper with the call number on it plainly visible so the girls and the adults outside can see that I'm trying to find a book and am not a pedophile. I grab the book as fast as I can and get the fuck out. Why the hell is this book in there? I guess I can see a librarian flipping through it and because McCloud makes his books in comics form, assumed it was a kids book or something.

As a result, the usual way I get comics is to reserve them from home on their crappy website, go to the library and grab it from the reserve shelf, go to the self check out machine, walk out while attempting to conceal the embarrassing covers (fuck you, comics), get in my car and go.

Why do I have to be humiliated when I get comics? Just keep them all together in one spot where everyone has access to them.

Seriously, it's like the inverse of comic shops where everyone shopping is pushing 50. These librarians need to get a clue and realize who reads comics.

Cleveland is a pretty shit town, but the CPL is god tier for funnybook moochers!

The Main Library building, not Louis Stokes wing, has comics in three spots. First floor has a popular lending section with some newer items.

The second floor has an entire wall nearly the length of a city block dedicated to Western and Japanese comics.

Then there's the "Look like a pedophile for free" teen / children's section with a smaller niche of comics, which honestly has no rhyme of reason. I found the Punisher Max trades I was looking for in there. In the teen / children section.

Punisher Max.

Teen / Children.

:X

Plus you can lend from other locations by requesting intra-library loans.

It's great stuff really. Shame it's in Cleveland. XD

Finally picked up Aquaman #12, that was a fucking great issue. This Aquaman series is my biggest New 52 surprise, I love it.

Yeah, I don't think they can actually stop a child from checking out Punisher Max but try to discourage it by separating titles by section (or failing to in that case). I mean, a kid could check out American Psycho if he wanted, you might have a rogue librarian or clerk try to stop them but they're aren't allowed to and again, automated check-out machines.

I'm not sure but I think you can legally browse porn on their computers but you'd have to be pretty damn shameless.

I remember a lady getting into a heated argument with a librarian because she wanted info or to pay her son's overdue fee or something and the librarian refused to disclose the title of the overdue item. The lady was flabbergasted.

Libraries are awesome.

and the 4th cancellation is voodoo. resurrection man, voodoo, and captain atom all get zero issues so for one month the new 52 features 55 books.

I'm actually starting to enjoy Resurrection Man. Oh well.

Yeah, Aquaman is really good right now.

Waid and Brevoort on the numbering game at BCC:

Though the assembled fans on stage all seemed to be legitimately blown away by what they saw, one in particular seemed to gently be displeased by the concept of re-numbering.

“A+ effort. Did it have to be renumbered again?” the fan asked, sparking applause before he shed some light on his personal history with Iron Man.

“My first issue of 'Iron Man' as a child was like #75, and I didn’t feel confused, and I didn’t feel thrown off, and I didn’t feel like, 'Oh, if only I could have entered with issue #1.’ I jumped in with 75 right through to 500 something. Why can’t books get big numbers, and that’s just okay? Why can’t a book go to 800, and that’s okay?”

To their credit, both Brevoort and Waid addressed these concerns head on.

“Sadly, in this marketplace, books with big numbers don't get big numbers unfortunately," Waid said. "That the... I agree with you. I think everybody up at this panel probably started Marvel comics somewhere in the middle of the run, maybe even most people in this room. The problem that -- again I’m not trying to speak for you [referring to Brevoort] -- the problem that we keep running into is that the retailers and the new fans, they’ve been trained by years of such bad continuity and comics, comics which you can jump into. They have been trained to believe that it’s impossible to jump into the middle of a run. That’s the mindset now, and you kinda have to plant a flag and make it clear. ‘Look, Marvel NOW! This is a good jumping on point.'"

Brevoort said, “Even beyond the folks that are right here -- I think anybody that’s here in this room has been around comics for a while -- feels like you jump onto a book in the middle at issue 500 or issue 79 or whatever. But especially when you go out into the world, and you kinda lose sight of this when you’re kinda in our culture. But I hear all the time from people who come and say I saw 'The Avengers' and I loved it. I want to read 'Avengers,' where do I start? I’m confused, I don’t know. Just the very barrier like that is so off-putting to a civilian audience. Guys that want to get in, that want to be a part of what we do, and the real answer is you could start anywhere, but it’s one thing to tell them that and it’s another thing to get people to actually act on that."

He said with Marvel NOW, they're putting a "big flag in the sand" and changing everything up.

"It seemed like it just made more sense to just go whole hog in and lead with the message: this is the place where if you’ve been enjoying the characters in film, in animation, anywhere out in the world," Brevoort said. "If you went away and you read them a couple of years ago and now you want to come back, here is a starting point, a clear, clean starting point. And the thing that communicates that the best is the No. 1's. I don’t like restarting the books from No. 1 all the time, I think we do try to do it too much. In this case, I kind of agree with the tactic.”

In response, the fan broached one small follow-up to Brevoort, asking what Marvel will do ”next year and the year after” in response to new readers.

“We will deal with each one of those situations as they come up each year as we go along. Are we ever going to re-launch stuff again? It’s not unlikely, to be perfectly honest," said Brevoort.
So yeah, it's been denied before but the truth is that we're definitely coming into the era of "season" numbering for comics.

Libraries are awesome.

They removed the automated check out machines from the CPL. I suspect the jerks found a way to game the system with them, say - demagnetize multiple items (they loan DVD/Bluray here) and hooray! Free movies. :|

If an item has an age restriction on it, wouldn't the library be required to enforce that?

And yes, I've seen plenty of giant vaginas on monitors walking through the CPL.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't gynecologists doing research. D:

Wow, Phantom Stranger was absolutely awful. How do you put your name on this? What kind of how to write erotic book did Didio learn to write from? Book needs editorially interference ASAP. Makes Tony Daniel look like a genius.

From my local library's website:

FREEDOM OF ACCESS

Santa Clara County Library District does not restrict access to any materials based on age. Responsibility for minors' selection of material rests with their parents or guardians. The Library does not act in loco parentis.

CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION

The Santa Clara County Library District recognizes our responsibility to protect each individual's right to privacy. California Law assures confidentiality of registration and circulation records. Questions asked, materials read, and information supplied at registration are all confidential.

Library staff may not give information about a patron's registration and circulation records to anyone other than the patron. This means, for example, that library staff may not give information to a parent about materials that have been checked out on his child's card or to a spouse about materials that have been checked out on his partner's card.

The library recognizes that in many families library cards are shared among family members. However, in order to comply with library policy and state law, we may give information about materials that have been checked out on a card to the card owner only.

The Library is also obligated under California law to retrieve unreturned library materials. Unpaid library debts are financial records which are not confidential and may be disclosed.

Kids can get whatever they want if they hide it from their parents. Not sure if this varies by state or something.

No automated check-outs would be a deal breaker for me. I'd probably be buying a lot more in the comfort and safety of the comic shop or Amazon, if that were the case for me. They don't judge.

So I've never read an Avengers comic in my life. My knowledge of the team is pretty much exclusively from the film. Would the New Avengers omnibus be a decent place to jump in, or is it too much of a spinoff?

I'd say it's a great story but too much of a spinoff to get a feel for what makes the Avengers.

My vote for a trade would be either:

Busiek's Avengers Assemble trade - http://www.amazon.com/dp/0785144986/?tag=neogaf0e-20

OR

Go old school (the best school) and grab The Korvac Saga - http://www.amazon.com/dp/0785144706/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Either are great intros to the Avengers way of life.

Always the best option. Part of the reason I used to love reading Swamp Thing as a kid was for the occasional swear and the scary monsters. :D

I have no shame. Plus I like taking a crazy variety of books to the counter in case they are nosy they'll be plain confused.

Avengers: Kree/Skrull War

So did anyone else watch the Robot Chicken DC special? No thread or anything, jeez. Pretty funny, i could see it getting better like the star wars ones. The Bane bit was hilarious.
