1ST PLACE WINNER:
Black Science #1; written by Rick Remender; pencils by Matteo Scalera; colors by Dean White; published by Image Comics (19pts)

2ND PLACE FINISHER:
*TIE* Harley Quinn #0; written by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti; pencils by Various; colors by Various; published by DC Comics (13pts)
*TIE* Manhattan Projects #16; written by Jonathan Hickman; pencils by Nick Pitarra; colors by Jordie Bellaire; published by Image Comics (13pts)
*TIE* Rat Queens #3; written by Kurtis J. Wiebe; pencils and colors by Roc Upchurch; published by Image Comics (13pts)

Here's How It Works
In the last week of the month (or earlier, if you're confident about your choices), any GAF member can send me a private message with their personal picks for the three best single issues released that month, from any publisher. These picks should be arranged in order of rank -- first, second, and third place -- and each ranking will be worth a specific point value. A first place ranking for a comic is worth 5 points; a second place is worth 3 points; a third place, 2 points. Then before next month's COMICS! OT goes live, I'll tally the results and point values from each ballot, and post the top three overall winners in the next OP as last month's, GAF-approved, best of the best. Then, maybe at the end of the year, we'll have a showdown between the year's top finishers or something similar.

A Sample Ballot
This is an example of how a sample ballot submitted by you might look. You don't have to use this formatting but I do ask that, however you send it to me, you are CLEAR on which comics you are voting for and in what order they are ranked.

Average GAF Member said:
1st Place: "Super-Fun Team Adventures" #14 (Mystery Comics; story by Jack Johnson, art by John Jackson) [worth 5 points.]
2nd Place: "Children's Bedtime Stories, Only With Nudity and Cursing" #69 (Happy Puppy Publishing; story by Jane Doe, art by John Doelner) [worth 3 points.]
3rd Place: "Grimdark, Extreme, and McDarkerson" #474 (Amazing Comics; story & art by Smitty Smithengen) [worth 2 points.]

The Voting Rules
1. Only single issues released that month are to be considered for voting; no trade collections, and no "just caught up" considerations for issues released one/two/however many months ago. Sorry if this excludes you from the voting process, trade-only readers and mail-order folk. I didn't see any other way.
2. Each GAF member is allowed one ballot, and once that ballot has been cast you are done for the month. If an issue comes out and you think it's the best comic you've ever read or will ever read, but you already cast your vote the week before, that's too bad. In other words, there are no take-backs so VOTE THOUGHTFULLY.
3. Three comics per ballot, and no more. You could send me a list of the ten best comics that month, with full paragraph summaries on why you ranked them in what order; but in the end, I'm only going to tally points for the top three and ignore the rest. You CAN pick just one book as the best that month... but that one vote is still worth only 5 points.
4. No ties on the ballots, please. You have to pick three comics as the best that month, and you have to rank them "1st, 2nd, 3rd" so that I can assign points to each. If you're torn between two issues of two different series as the best that month, and you can't decide which one you loved more than the other, TRY.
5. To make things a bit easier on me when it comes to making the OP, I'm establishing a deadline for casting ballots of 6pm Eastern Standard Time on the last day of the month. You can cast your ballot at any time during the month that you wish; however once that deadline has passed, any ballots sent to me will be ignored.
6. Again, to make things easier I would prefer that your votes be cast via private message sent to me, rather than through an open post in the OT. In addition to keeping the voting process a secret, using the PM method means I won't have to search through thread pages for someone's vote posted as an afterthought to an unrelated discussion.

Failure to comply with any of the above rules MAY result in your ballot getting thrown out.

Other rules and stipulations may follow, but for now we'll roll with these for the first round and see how it goes. Have fun voting!

Spoilers. In the age of digital comics, they are increasingly becoming an issue in these threads, as the drive to be first to discuss the week's releases overrides common sense and good posting etiquette. So over the coming weeks and months, the members of Comic GAF will be collaborating on and will eventually be implementing a system of general rules for avoiding spoilers on new comics in the Comics OT thread. But for now, please abide by the temporary guidelines outlined below. And remember, you are being watched and judged by your peers.

1. Discussion of newly released comics that involves specific plot details shall be accompanied at all times by the appropriate use of the
tag function.
2. Direct posting of full-page images from newly released comics using the tags is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
3. Direct posting of images or spoilers from comics that have yet to be released is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
4. Covers, solicitation copy, and/or promotional materials shall not be considered spoilers and are allowed, unless their content involves specific plot details; in those cases, outgoing links with spoiler warnings should be used.
5. The unmarked posting of spoilers related to comics will be allowed after a period of one week (Wednesday to Wednesday) from that comic's release. (NOTE: Longer? -Spike)
6. Members of Comic GAF are expected at all times to exercise common sense and polite discretion as a matter of courtesy to fellow posters. I know, tough one.
7. If you are unsure of whether or not posting something would constitute a spoiler, err on the side of caution and use the
tags.

In short, don't be Stephanie Brown. Don't be... The Spoiler. For one thing, you're not that loveable. >:|

Happy reading, and happy holidays!

Glad at least one of my picks made it, go go MP!

Wasn't Inhumanity cancelled or something?

That's "Inhuman", the totally not confusing sister flagship book drawn by Joe Mad. I like to think this is the back-up book they had ready if and when Joe Mad gets stuck playing the new Zelda or something.

Image rocking the vote. Well deserved! They're on fire and Black Science brought the goods.

I'll give both Dead Body Road and The Saviors a shot.

Filthy Slug

Crowd screaming like hounds at the heat of the chase/ All the colors of the rainbow flood my face
That Harley Quinn in the top three issues of the month is perplexing. I thought it was alright but it just read like a Deadpool comic via Harley Quinn.

I'm happy about that Black Science, though! There was some serious backlash once it came out but almost none of it was warranted, I thought.

So now that Infinity is over, what's the repercussions of this event moving forward? There isn't much change in the status quo except for
Atlantis being destroyed and Black Panther being exiled in New Avengers.

There's a bunch of Inhumans sprouting up all over thanks to the Terrigen mist bomb Black Bolt unleashed.

I should really jump on Manhatten Projects but I haven't even read a fraction of the new stuff I bought.

Glad to see Rat Queens in the top though, remember guys, "Betty ain't no fool" :D

Hey guys, I've never been into comics but I'm on a Batman roll lately, I've beat Arkham Asylum and Arkham City back to back and I also enjoyed a lot Nolan's films. I like their somewhat serious tone, while I couldn't stand Burton's films (though Gotham's design was kind of cool actually).

So, I'd like to know what are the essential Batman books. I've been glancing through some of them in the comic store, like The Killing Joke and The Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul, and while they do nothing for me I guess I can't expect to get hooked only by skimming some random pages.

Thanks!

Batman Hush might be up your alley.

A bit surprised East of West #7 didn't make the best of November list. I really loved that issue and I know we have a lot of EoW readers here.

Black Mirror.

After that grab Court of Owls.

I've recently been getting back into comics after a long hiatus. While I used to stick to the Marvel/DC stuff, Image has been attracting my attention a lot lately. The books I have been and will continue to read include Saga, East of West, Black Science and (maybe) Alex + Ada.

With three other first issues coming from Image this month, I'm wondering if someone could help clue me in on the one (or two) most promising between these - Dead Body Road, The Saviors and Krampus. Or is it dangerous investing in mostly newer series that may not be around for long? If the series does end shortly, is it more likely it will it end with some resemblance of a conclusion or will it end on a cliffhanger?

If you'd also like to recommend any other good recent releases (10 or less released issues) I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

I think I'll be giving Krampus a try. I usually search out a preview of a series before I pick it up, but half the time there are none made available so I either take the leap blind- or don't if I have doubts. Krampus I'll probably try preview or not because the premise tickles me.

For other Image titles, I'd suggest you look into:

A Voice in the Dark: about a college-age female serial killer in the making. One issue in.

Zero: espionage-y stuff featuring a dude who was raised from childhood to be a top secret military, uh, guy. Three issues in.

Umbral: dark fantasy featuring a young female thief who tangles with scary magical monster beings. At least, that's what issue one was about.

Rat Queens: funny and silly with lovable characters set in an RPG type world. Three issues in.

Lazarus: Protagonist is a bioengineered young warrior woman tasked with protecting her family. Set in a kinda-sorta realitic future in which a few select families hold all of the power and most people are impoverished "waste." Cinematic and whatnot.

Can't believe Infinity is over.

I quite enjoyed the run, including the tie-ins (which might put me in the minority? I dunno)..

Also grabbed the new Amazing X-Men. Looks like that could be good fun.

Read the Deadpool Annual last night, it was nice to see a bit of the "inner conversational" stuff reminiscent of the Way run. I enjoyed it.

The Five Pillars of Batman:
Year One - Batman's origin: "Who I Am, How I Came To Be", though focuses on Commissioner Gordon a fair bit
The Long Halloween - A holiday-themed serial killer stalks Gotham's mobsters, who hire supervillains to try and elminate the killer. Really atmospheric.
Hush - "Batman's Greatest Hits", lots of "Hey, it's that guy! I know that guy!" Jim Lee kills it on art.
The Killing Joke - All it takes to descend into madness is one bad day. Probably the definitive Joker story
The Dark Knight Returns - An elderly Batman comes out of retirement. Recently adapted into a pair of very good animated movies which are probably on Netflix or something.

Other Stuff:
- The current main Batman series is really good, it goes "Court of Owls", "City of Owls", "Death of the Family" and then segues into a re-telling of the origin in "Zero Year Book 1: The Secret City".
- You may also like "The Black Mirror" by the same writer, featuring Dick Grayson (the original Robin) as Batman. Tremendous art and writing throughout.
- There is Grant Morrison's run on Batman, which is highly regarded though I think it could be intimidating. Start with "Batman & Son"

Debating whether to pick Dead Body Road up.
I think it's just going to be a generic storyline of revenge.
Justin Jordan is the very definition of generic.

The CBR interview for Krampus sold me and The Saviors I am definitely getting for Robinson and J Bone.

I've been thinking about how every time we have a comic book thread about recent events outside the OT, they're usually pretty negative (unless they're the always fun power level and feats threads). It got me to thinking about doing a "This Year in Comics" thread sometime this month where we talk about books that came out this year that we enjoyed (maybe by nominating our personal "books of the year"), and for once attempt to have a positive comics conversation outside of our happy little home here.

Would anyone be interested in something like that? (I might need a little bit of help as I don't read as much/keep up with news as much as some of y'all.)

Wonder if they changed the name of JL Canada?

More likely it's about the three Leagues coming together. Hence "United." JLC seemed more like it was just for an arc.

Sex Criminals. Lazarus.

I think I'll be giving Krampus a try. I usually search out a preview of a series before I pick it up, but half the time there are none made available so I either take the leap blind- or don't if I have doubts. Krampus I'll probably try preview or not because the premise tickles me.

Thanks to both. I'm definitely going to check out Lazarus and Rat Queens and I will keep my eye out for Umbral.

Happy to see Black Science wear the belt for last month. Such a wonderfully paced and imaginative comic. I'd say I'd love Remender on Fantastic Four but no, I just want him doing his own work. Oh, and Uncanny Avengers. And Captain America. And more Frankencastle, because I dream of the impossible.

I have not seen an issue of Rat Queens in any comic store here in town, and will probably just trade wait on it now.

As for Harley Quinn, I think people were just happy to see people on the book who definitely love the character and are ignoring the bullshit being done to the character elsewhere in the DCU. Overjoyed to see that fourth wall tedium will not be in the regular series.

Buy the things you think you'll enjoy reading and don't worry too much about how long they'll be around for.

I normally decide by reading the synopses of the books picking out the ones that interest me, looking at the creative teams involved and whether I've enjoyed their previous work (if applicable), and then there's the characters involved but this mostly applies to the main universe books at Marvel and DC. If all signs are good I go for it. If something is missing then I'm a bit more hesitant. I normally place most emphasis on the creative teams.

For the final questions, that's hard to say. I'd like to think most creative teams want to conclude their books in a suitable manner but they're not always given the choice

UA #14 was another level of madness, I hope Remender can keep it up.

People in other places hated the shit out of it though.

I haven't read FF and F4, did Fraction really fuck it up?

If "other places" includes CBR, they hate everything.

Two of my 3 BOTM picks were Black Science and Manhattan Projects. Good to see them represented.

People complain about all the big 2 talk in here, but Image cleaned up in the actual voting as I expected.

Well yeah, because it's where the best books are. People probably read more big 2 books on the whole but everyone actually likes their indie titles more.

In the last year, I went from 90% Marvel to 90% Image. I followed the quality train into station.

I read big 2 books to keep up with the stories of my favorite mainstream characters. Batman, X-Men, etc. etc. The books I end up enjoying the most are usually Image titles.
