Came back from Wonder Woman and y'all: really? That's the movie you're gonna champion as the future of the DCEU? The one that does all things you said you hated when Snyder did them? The one that's so scared of itself it tries and pull off THAT closing narration as an alternative to saying anything about imperialism of any kind?

Like, yeah, it's well shot and choreographed, so that puts it above 90% of all Marvel movies, and there's solid stuff in there, but man. It's stripped of all ambition and attitude.

I think that's just internet hyperbole. Something is either the greatest thing since sliced bread or the worst pil of dogshit ever.

Horses for courses I guess. I actually think most of Syners new 52 run is pretty good, only arc I wasn't struck on was endgame.

Now All Star Batman on the other hand........................

I really liked his Batman. All star tho... No thanks. Imo he needs Capullo.

That's the main problem when Slott is writing a story that features Otto.
Well, it's not great. At all.
And I want a figure of that Doc Ock.
But I'm still mad.

The point of that was to end Parker Industries in time for Legacy resetting everything back to the status quo.
...what. Have I been gone for that long?
Wait, how the hell does PI end without Peter looking like a giant idiot? I mean, more than he already is since Secret Wars.
Uuugh. Marvel, why.

I simply think the idea Snyder had in his head for the series never really came out on the page. He wasn't a series semi out of continuity where he could use a bunch of characters. He did get to use those characters but they were forced into storylines for the sake of it. The first 2 arcs basically had the same problem where the last issue explains what the actually plot and story were. Snyder isn't that kind of free wheeling writer who can have single separate issues that organically become an arc like Ellis did with Moon Knight.

Yeah I don't know maybe Capullo helped him with some of the plot points in the new 52 run. All star just seems like editorial let him off the leash to write whatever he wants and he took it too far sometimes. Its overloaded with horrible bat gadgets that are really cheesy and the storys either dull or all over the place.

Saying that Dark Days is Snyder off the leash and I'm mostly liking it, so who knows, somethings not right about All Star anyway whatever it is

He could sell it and donate the money. One example, I am sure they find a way.
But I expect Norman to take it over somehow.

Yeah maybe that's part of it being all over the place, him trying to fit in these characters he wanted to use before hes done with Batman and he's trying to shoehorn them into poor stories.

I really believe Capullo and his team can cover for lots of Snyder's shortcomings with amazing art.

The US-Version of the Homecoming Blu-Ray comes with a Spider-Man Mask that can emote, as in change the expression... Fuuuuuck I need this, who buys this for me?

Some ComiXology sales are ending today, any chance that there will be a Comic-Con sale starting soon/today?
Should either be tomorrow at noon (Japan time, sorry), or Tuesday at noon. I really hope it's the former (T-minus 15~ hours!)

I don't really think Capullo had anything to do with the quality of the plot/characterisation in the new 52 run versus All Star the way you guys are looking at it. I just think All Star (vol 1 at least) was genuinely poor and a case of a writer getting away from himself and a little too on top of the world. Snyder's nu52 Bat work is very much in line strengths and weaknesses wise with his other work without Capullo. Capullo's skills obviously compliment and enhance the type of stuff Snyder was telling in that run and vice versa but I don't think Snyder without Capullo immediately tanks him, he has way too much work that keeps a consistency before that run for that to apply. His work on AmVamp, The Wake, Swamp Thing etc, love it or hate it.

If Snyder hadn't jacked up two movies and SS wasn't a dire film, maybe Wonder Woman wouldn't have been hailed as the second coming of the DCEU.

But those are things that happened.

I need to read more lol that's why I was careful with my words, I've only read the first vol so I can't fully fully judge that side of things, can really only go on that first story (and I really can't get into JRJR)

The second arc is pretty bad too. I bounced off after that and then it got cancelled after the third arc so...

We really doing this "the older movies were better" thing, huh? And to think, people call comic fans snobby.

Doing my impressions a day late

Gave up on Calexit and Centipede. Neither were a thing I wanted to read. I continue to wish the Vader comic was a movie. I continue to lament the cancellation of Black Panther and The Crew, particularly in light of how Marvel typically doesn't announce cancellations but rather stealth disappears books from solicitations. Deadly Class feels like I'm being set up for a bad time. Still don't understand Dark Days, but it looks like one of my favorite families is maybe back? And that logo reveal in Amazing was fantastic. I like Spidey as a leader. That's a cool take.

Nah. Imo he doesn't need Capullo. All-Star is great.

I really loved the insanity of the Two-Face Road Trip arc of All-Star. But I am biased because (a) I *love* JRJr when he's motivated and not phoning it in, and I think All-Star was his best work since the Dimension Z run on Cap, and (b) Gentleman Ghost showed up in a panel. Any comic with Gentleman Ghost in it (even if it's just for a single panel!) is instantly better than any comic *without* Gentleman Ghost, therefore All-Star is better than most comics.

I really wanted to like All Star after coming out of the new 52 run, but the first arc promised a decent story with the few moments of bruce and harvey as boys teasing a shared past and meaningful story but we ended up with that pretty much going nowhere and instead got awful bat gadgets and five minute cameos of c-list villains done in Romita JR art.

After the first arc the art picked up in my opinion with Jock and Tula Lotay coming on, but then the story was a mess of jumbled one off stories that I'm guessing where meant to be tied together but were also pretty bad. That was me done at that point.

It really seems like that. There is and up and down nature with DC films now when it comes to how the movies are made.

I like All Star. 😰

Wow Deadpool is going super dark. I love recap pages. I really love Black Cat; she should be a higher profile character. Defenders is shaping up to be a solid book and this Diamondback is amazing. I like Zatanna a lot. I really hope Justice League Dark happens. Lately, it seems like Batman is being almost a Tony Stark analog: fucking things up by putting his nose where it doesn't belong. Metal seems like he's about to make a huge mistake with that machine. Tech seems like he's about to make a huge mistake with that sphere. I love Aphra so much. I really do. She's my favorite character in Star Wars by a lot and that dress is amazing. Also, holy shit at that last page.
Sorcerers Supreme also has a great last page reveal.

I watched the extended train fight scene from Spider-Man 2.1 on YouTube yesterday and it's fucking awesome. Blows anything from Homecoming away. I can't find the Blu-ray on Amazon though which pisses me off.

1:45-1:51. lol. Somebody doesn't know how physics work. That's why Doc Ock is so shocked when Spider-man comes flying at him, "As a man of science, this is entirely illogical! I'm incapable of hitting back in this situation!"

Me, too. I really enjoy Black Panther and The Crew. Misty forever.

Definitely, its a real shame its almost done, I actually think its got stronger with each issue, in my opinion its a stronger book than the main panther series right now. It's great at covering thems like history and community change and character insights into Misty, Ororo and T'Challa.

I looked over the comic book startup guide in OP, but it says it's outdated and to feel free to ask, so:

What is a good collection of comics to buy to get started? I often go to my FLGS (friendly local game store) which doubles as a FLCS. I always have the urge to grab something, but never know what to get.

Background:

I've read Watchmen and enjoyed it. My partner has the Walking Dead collections, and I've read some and enjoyed. I read Whedon's Xmen run on Marvell Unlimited a few years back and thought it was OK. I read first volume of Sandman, but have yet been motivated to finish it. I've been told by a friend that Superman Red Son and Frank Miller's Dark Knight are great. Thoughts? I'm mostly looking for a great page turner and interesting story. I have no real 'comic book superhero' affinities, so that's completely optional.

Lazarus later arcs talk. Tagging so as to not spoil prospective new Lazarus readers.

Fun tidbit that changes the way I see early arcs. My girlfriend reads the back matter, and I do not. Apparently Rucka wrote that
all the flashbacks to young Forever are the new clone. None of those are Forever. And they aren't flashbacks. They are the newest clone in real time.
Can you believe that? Blew my mind. Now I need to go back and look those issues over.

Hahah I remember pointing that out to someone in here after they read that arc and got the end reveal and we were discussing it and they were like WAT. They hadn't picked it up at all haha I thought
the fact she meets Sonia and Sonia is still the age we know her at was the thread that kind of tugs it in your mind then it all unravels and you're like OMG!
There were never flashbacks!
, haha.

Omg Donnie, you read in volumes, right, so you haven't read the most recent arc yet? Omgggggg Donnie!

This cover from Jorge Jimenez made me smile:

Theres people who've been on this thread for years who've given me plenty of comic suggestions and who'll have better ideas than me I'm sure, but I'll start off with a couple to get the ball rolling:

Saga: Long running series by Image, probably the best selling book behind walking dead. Pretty much covers everything, action, drama, comedy, sci-fi, romance. Sci-fi family drama story about a couple from two warring different races trying to raise there family when everyones against them.

Deadly Class: Actiony dark teen drama from Image about a school for assassins set in the 80,s. Plenty of brutal action and a few laughs to go with it in the one.

Vision : Marvel comic but is pretty stand alone, you don't really need to read any other series and only 12 issues I think. Just great character drama about a machine trying to be human and raise a family of his own. All kind of good themes about what it means to be human and to have a family.

Is there any particular genre you'd be looking at more, action, comedy, sci-fi, traditional superhero stuff or are you pretty open to anything

Damn Christopher Priest's Black Panther is a bit confusing right now I think, only 2 issues in. The whole Everett K. Ross thing and him losing his pants, and the devil granting him new pants, I'm like what the hell is going on.

I understand somebody have used some orphanage or childcare organization for money laundering, and in the process a child T'Challa knew has died, and so he has come to New York to find the man behind this, while Wakanda is in turmoil.

Guess I've grasped some of this story.

I typically read sci-fi or fantasy if I'm reading a book. I'm open to anything, but I trend towards things that are fantastical.
Fantasy or SF, huh?
Saga, Monstress, and Birthright might be right up your alley. Check those out. Would you prefer something that is finished?

Perhaps my favorite Scifi comic is Prophet (Brandon Graham, not Liefeld).

Oh my god Edge of Venomverse 2 was AMAZING. I think it should be called Venpool. Future Fight I need three new Gwenpool outfits: Casual, Dark, and Venom. Jubilee mixes berries in with her blood and that's my favorite thing right now. I'm certainly going to miss Gotham Academy. Maps should be Damian's girlfriend for real. The Injustice comics are really quite fantastic. Jean Grey is the best x book, which is shocking because a year ago I didn't even like the character. It feels like they are building Jean into a character that they can use as a lynchpin of the x books. Also I would read a Odinson and Jean book. Lunella calling Deadpool a bootleg Spider-Man will never not be funny.

I hate zero stakes death scenes. Like, if the character is in an ongoing comic that's doing well, I'm not buying they got killed in a team book. But then again this is comics: the only way you'll die for real is being a black man during a civil war event.

I can't believe they are launching another Archie book. Like, you guys are late with all the books you have. Work on getting that pipeline fixed before you toss more in it.
