COMICS!!! |OT| July 2017 | Princess, I've Seen the Way You Look At Me.

Are there any comics similar to Squirrel Girl? I bought the whole run during the recent Amazon sale and it's hilarious. I usually don't like superhero stuff at all, anything that takes itself seriously just seems ridiculous to me with Watchmen being the only exception. I thought Frank Miller Batman was alright, but not one of my favorite comics. There's been a few superhero comics that sounded cool but I just couldn't get into. Like Ms. Marvel sounds really interesting on paper but I thought it was really obviously geared towards young kids, just a bunch of really dorky jokes and high school drama that I either roll my eyes at or couldn't care less about.

But Squirrel Girl has me laughing out loud multiple times per issue. I'm not that far in, currently on the issue where some people get stuck in the Statue of Liberty and they're telling stories about Squirrel Girl and it's so damn funny, loved the parts where someone mistook her for Spiderman and told the story about Venom and the guy who basically retold a fanfiction story that included a gender-swapped version of SG, "Squirrel Earl," with all the powers of Squirrel and Earl!

I think maybe my tastes are just really specific since it looks like a lot of people recommend comics like Ms. Marvel to people who like SG, but I figured I'd ask if there's anything I should check out. FWIW I also loved the recent run of Flintstones.

Ms Marvel is less like SG than it is a down to earth, street-level superhero book. It's great, but probably not what you're looking for.

I think what you're looking for is Quantum & Woody. It's an absurd book about two dysfunctional brothers that get superpowers and they're particularly awful at superheroing.

Have you tried Gwenpool? I think that might be right up your alley.

Haven't heard of either of these but I'll check them both out, thanks!

Forgot to mention I usually don't like "funny" superhero books either, like Deadpool always seems really try-hard to me. The trading cards in Squirrel Girl are one of the few things I don't find funny.

Hope I like these though! I kind of thinking about maybe digging into some Spiderman too, I've heard the Sam Raimi films didn't really do a great job of capturing the spirit of the comics which are a lot more light-hearted and silly. What's a good place to start?

Gwenpool has real heart with the comedy and some real sad moments. Gwen is just lovely and she isn't Deadpool.

Haha, I was just saying I'm typically don't like Deadpool, though the movie was funny, that wasn't in direct response to the Gwenpool recommendation. Realized the -pool connection after I posted.

I think Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat was a bit like Squirrel Girl, too. Not identical, but felt in the same vein.

I didn't think Hellcat was half as clever as Squirrel Girl. They went for that tone but Leth isn't as good a writer as EISNER AWARD WINNER Ryan North.

What the- Messi and I agree on a thing!?

Check the tape. I've been Gwenpool since day one. The second I seen the variant I wanted it.

Eh, I think Duggan's Deadpool does too, though.

Now, ClayKavalier, I've been thinking about this. I think what separates Squirrel Girl is it's just super quirky with it's humor. It's hard not to laugh at its silliness. Because of this, the closest book I can think of to be similar to that tone is Bandette from Dark Horse. It's very silly and quirky and I think you'd like it a lot. It is also collected in adorable little hardcovers.

I never meant to imply deadpool doesn't have heart. It's more that gwenpool actively isn't Deadpool and she doesn't like him.

How is it and with what would you compare it? This page looks a lot like Sterlin and Kirby to me.

It comes off as kinda cheesy by todays standards, but it's basically what sci-fi stories were like back when it was first published. It began in the late 60's, and was actually a French comic.

There's a 50% off Fantagraphics sale on Comixology if you use the coupon F17. Good time to buy some stuff from them.

Some books I'd recommend:
Love & Rockets
5000KM Per Second
Megahex and its sequels: Megg and Mogg in Amsterdam and One More Day
My Favorite Thing is Monsters
Nijigaraha Holograph (manga, but very good)

I must have missed what you're doing in the US. I assumed SDCC, but then it seemed like that wasn't the case. I don't get why you're outside, though. Go inside and read your books.
Edit: Oh good. Now you're safe indoors away from the dangers of large dirty baths and UV rays.
I hate the fact that people think I'm being disingenuous when I recommend Gwenpool.
They do? It's one of the few Marvel books I'm reading. It's so fun, and I think Gwen is pretty interesting the way she navigates a world unlike anyone else. I like her development.

DC: Rebirth will start at 2.99 with 80 pages
Mahvoo: Secret Empire ZERO will start at 4.99
DC: All the Metal one shots are 2.99, no variants
Mahvoo: Legacy will be 5.99 and Generations will be 4.99 WITH VARIANTS and with 50 pages

Fan: But DC has more value with their book...
Mahvoo: But their return policy devalues the book.
*Fan is confused*
Mahvoo: Also Secret Empire is now 12 issues, all at 5.99

How no one called out Marvel out on this over the weekend shocks me

Fans who get into the panels probably don't want to ask those kind of questions for various reasons.

I know nothing about Squirrel Girl but I think the gf would be interested. What's a good trade to start with or what is the first trade?

Oh really? I thought he was one of the main people along with Cyborg, Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Wonder Girl, and Raven.
He is at the beginning of Wolfman's run, but then he leaves for a long time due to his personal life. He comes back for maybe less than 10 issues total after that. Jericho is in many more issues. Maybe Danny is even in more issues hahah.

Only thing I'll say on the above is the actual main Metal series is 3.99 an issue with variant covers. If you looked at tie ins for secret empire I'm sure costs on the tie in series would vary, with some being cheaper like the metal one shots are.

Apart from that they really should be called out on the above. Its ridiculous the strategy there trying, coming back with a scattered vague themed relaunch with a jump in issue thats too over priced to actually get anyone reading it that wouldnt already. Marvel has the better series on the whole but they have no direction at all recently. Just throw everything at it and hope something sticks.

Gwenpool > Spider-Gwen

Edit: I and many other people will also hate the creation of Gwenpool but the book itself (at least in vol 1) is pretty good. I caught up on it with the amazon marvel sale. Instead I got the Gerry Dugan Deadpool from secret wars that's still great.

Thanks for that. I picked up the usagi Yojimbo books. I'll look at those too

Edit: woah the code is a one time only use?
