COMICS|OT|October 2017- The only thing scarier than Messi's avatar are Marvels sales

You guys fuck with this Kehasuk dude?

www.kehasuk.com

I saw someone with his DBZ poster in line at the Korilla truck and got a few of his prints. I guess I have to read DBZ and My Hero Academia now so I can understand the posters.

Saladin Ahmed, GWW, Duggan and Hannah Blumenreich were like the only writers who worked for Marvel who spoke against the propaganda comic. GWW started preparing to quit and Blumenreich cut all ties to the company and won't do any work for them again.

what propaganda comic

It was both. The Future's End issue basically was about Batman stealing a solution to help perfect his clones.

The Detective Comics issue took place YEARS later, and basically it explains how Bruce made it so every certain amount of years later, a Clone will be made to take up the mantle of Batman.
Aaaah I see. Makes more sense.
I want Rosenberg on an X-Men team.
You want to elevate the X-books? Put Ewing and Rosenberg on them. Bunn's doing fine, but Pak, Guggenheim, and whomever the fuck is writing Gen X can go fly off a bridge with the amateur hour shit they've been pulling. "Look guys, surely these books have mutants and are X-books!"

Bastards.

I know I seem angry, but it's only because I am.

Missed that there was an Oni sale going on. Gonna grab:
Lost at Sea
Lucky Penny
Whiteout

Off the Image and Dark Horse sales I already bought:
Extremity 1-6 - Saw some of you guys were really into this
Blacksad - Always meant to read this
Dead Inside 2-5 - Never read the first issue but I'm going to assume it's solid based off of Arcudi writing

DC:
Brings back Jeff Lemire offically, announces Protector, shows off Doomsday Clock, new Metal info, the first pages of the next arc of Batman, a new Bat mini, New Age of DC, New Terrifics info

Marvel:
Almost loses G Willow Wilson and Saladin Ahmed, loses Hannah Blumenreich, all that stems from a comic about a Aerospace Company connected to Army Drones, annouces a Weapon H book and gets no response, announces a Weeknd book, tries to calm down retailers and it goes to hell after bigoted nerds speak up.

It seems like I'm harping on Mahvoo but fuck me, this was a trainwreck

Is Lucky Penny a complete series? I don't really get what's going on with its webcomic stuff. Is it just a collection of webcomic strips?

I don't know what happened to Marvel in the last few years, it feels like they are sinking further and further down this pit.

Everything they do is bizarre or ill advised. Or directly contrary to what everyone wants.

Pure speculation: Pearlmutter makes managing Marvel difficult and it could have gotten worse these past few years

I think everything that comes out about what its like to work for Marvel is pretty dour. Im not talking about writers and artists but editors and business side. We know Pearlmutter keeps an extremely tight budget and its pretty easy to see how that would affect employee performance.

How did they almost lose Wilson this time?

We talked about this a bit on today's Bull Moose episode, but the long and shot of it is that Marvel editorial just has no idea what they're doing. What you get as a result is pure random noise; some of it's good (Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, Gwenpool), some of it's resoundingly mediocre like the X-Men line, and a lot of it's catastrophically awful like the Northrup Grumman thing. When you're a business, with inertia and capital investments to make before you do anything, "random chance" is gonna get you considerably worse results than the term would indicate.

It also requires a degree of willful blindness. They're definitely not talking to their creative teams before they decide this stuff. Do you really see a Weapon H series getting pitched unprompted? The constant fighting with retailers points to that too.

Okay, someone help me out with this:
The Goon on Comixology.

Thinking of grabbing this series finally via the linewide sale for Dark Horse. I'm noticing that it seems like it'd be noticeably cheaper to grab all the single issues versus the collections. Would that get me everything, or would I be missing significant content?

Also again want to repeat the question: Have any particularly standout new Image series started in the last year that I should look into?
Anyone on this? Want to get some use out of that Comixology sale before expires, but I want to do it right.

Gotham Resistance was quality. All of these are horror stories and it's great.
Jessica Jones

Oh god the last panel made me feel something in my Spine
Absolutely chilling.
Normally I'd be leery of them revisiting an old story arc like this, but it seems like they know what they're doing.
Bendis has shown he absolutely knows what he's doing. All the way back to that scene where Jess walks into a liquor store, browses, wonders what the hell she's doing, and then leaves.

Mostly true, but I dislike how you're framing The Weeknd comic
lack of creative team aside
as a bad thing!

I wouldn't really call any of the stuff we see "random" good or bad. The thing is Marvel puts a lot of focus on what will make them the most money in the short term while ignoring the long term and it's the cause of a lot of the complaints people have with them. Retailers are getting fed up and we're seeing stuff like Marvel bringing back their biggest heroes, so 2018 will be an interesting year for Marvel good or bad.

Did anyone read the Black Eyed Peas comic?

It's pretty stupid to be a Marvel exclusive comic retail in 2017.

I don't understand the logic in having a publisher exclusive store in general.

I heard the SoCal region has a lot of comic stores that are heavily Marvel focused. I imagine the ones that are so vocal in their racism and homophobia are the ones running those comic shops.

We'll see what those people say when the classic heroes return. They'll probably just keep asking for the diverse characters who do have books to go away though.

Marvel:"That Donny Cates seems pretty cool" was all I got out of that Cup O' Joe Avengers panel.

Also they slapped a big number 1 on that Inhumans book with Del Mundo on art and then corrected it to be a one-shot later.

Home now..have to take pics of my commissions and auction wins when I get my phone charged up

Picked up my sketch covers from Joe Quinones,Riley Rossmo, Tim Seeley and Genevieve FT today as well as my big Laura Braga commission.

So, just for fun, I looked at how many titles in Rebirth had one or more members of their creative team stayed on a book they did the previous volume of. This is my tally. It could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's not.

  • Aquaman
  • Green Lantern Corps
  • Green Arrow
  • Harley Quinn
  • Red Hood
  • Batman Beyond

I ran a similar tally for Legacy, EXCEPT, I only counted books where one member of the creative team had done at least 15 issues -about the standard Marvel tenure- in the previous volume. (I didn't count Alias for Jessica Jones, however, because of the length of time between the two volumes, which meant I only counted the previous 12 issues)

This is the tally I arrived at:

  • All-New Wolverine
  • Amazing Spider-Man
  • Avengers
  • Black Panther
  • Champions
  • Daredevil
  • Deadpool
  • Iron Man
  • Thor
  • Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
  • Ms. Marvel
  • Spider-Gwen
  • Gwenpool
  • Adjectiveless Spider-Man
  • Squirrel Girl

There's Grayson/Nightwing, though that's obviously changing now.

Blaming editorial instead of budget is pretty meanspirited to be honest.

Soliciting pitches, taking the time to assign people to guide entire lines or sets of characters all takes time and manhours.

Take Marvel’s logos (please!).

Do you think:
A) They hired the worst person on earth to design all their logos
or
B) The logo guy has to design 90% of their logos, all their print collections, their podcast art, their video interstitials, new issues of FOOM, recap pages, and house ads.

Which do you think is more likely?

Think about that before you go around saying Marvel editorial is willfully ignorant.

My friend runs a shop in SoCal, what exactly is the point of casting this kind of gross-ass aspersion?

What else have you “heard”?

Also, dude, I’m doubting a lot of “SoCal” retailers took a cross country flight to NYCC to complain about diversity.

I grew up on Long Island have bought comics in the Tristate for over thirty years now and I “heard” some of most backward-ass, ingrown-ass, mysoginist-ass, bullshit come out of some dark-ass, unwelcoming-ass New York area comic shops.

Marvel, DC, fucken Starchild by James A. Owen, it doesn’t matter what comics a shop pushes or where they are. Some of them are just run by the worst grossest people on earth.

It's all of that, but I'll bring up a third thing: the constant events and relaunches that mean you constantly have to reinvent the wheel and thus struggle to redefine what a character, a book or a whole line is supposed to be. It's the story of the X-Men line. It's the story of every volume of Captain Marvel after Kelly Sue's. It's what leads to "I dunno, Steve Rogers is a nazi now?".It's bound to happen to Old Man Logan too, now. If Marvel doesn't know what the book is supposed to be, how the fuck could we?

Totally agree. And Sandy is right. It’s all shortsighted moves. Whenever I hear shit about Marvel on the “inside” it’s always about some short term deal they have to make because another deal fell through or something.

Like this Northrop thing. I mean, damn. I wouldn’t be surprised if spiking this pushes whatever is supposed to happen after Legacy another quarter because they just had to eat half a million bucks.
