Command & Conquer 3 Demo IS HERE

Jesus, I am completely addicted to the demo. THIS IS A REAL C&C SEQUEL.

If I could only build some trenches/walls and see the structures getting constructed instead of planting them once completed...

I can't believe I am loving a C&C made by EA. ****, I am pretty sure something will come to bite me in the ass, like a gigantic piece of spyware embebed with the final game, or maybe some bizarre bug that will fry my videocard. It is too good to be true.

So awesome.

I'm wondering how this will fare for the competitive players, since no one has played against a human yet. I'm not a big fan of the squads, maybe because I'm used to ZH and I liked it that way. This game may or may not turn into a turtle fest online, who knows. The pace seems a lot slower.

it kinda sucks unless you're doing it right at the begnning of the game, they are easily destoryed by slightly stronger units

They work good as combined arms later in the game and also to protect your infantry from things like marksmen.

I don't have much trouble beating the medium AI, but damn the hard AI is impossible. Rushing with tanks targetting harvesters refinery's setting up multiple bases...

Hard is very possible.

I am still sytiggling with brutal.

Has anyone here beaten a brutal (Nod, as GDI)?

Edit - Getting close.

Use the hotkeys and rush a few buildings to buy time.
Expand quickly.
Make sure you pick the area the computer didn't pick!
Get a tech center up quick so you can build the good defensive towers. Then you can withstand any rush.

I just noticed that there's no EAX 5.1 sound :(
EAX is pretty overrated. It just adds some post processing effects to the audio. For example, the original release of Half Life 2 has excellent 5.1 surround sound audio with no EAX support.

Mammoth tanks!

Takes out tanks, in 5+ groups, easily takes out suicide bombers and the nod's helicopter units.

Only one that its weak to is bombers.

And when you get the production chain going, you can replace them fast enough; get to their base and blow up the nod airports (looks like fat tall towers with a bulb at top).

Beat brutal.

Here's how I did it.

Refinery - Place top left of con yard
Power plant - place as close to the top left tiberium spike as possible
Barracks - place as far to the bottom and right as possible (toward other spike)
Build a war factory, train 2 engineers immediately, build a watchtower

The first engineer goes to the top left spike
then place your watch tower near that spike, cover it well be your real goal is to hit units that come in from the right, near the funny looking whale building.
The second engineer goes to the FIELD near the second spike.
Telling him to go to the field is faster since he will use the lower opening in the fence.
Once past the opening in the fence, capture the spike

place your warfactory to the right of the barracks and queue up 2 harvesters.
WARNING - If you place your factory too close to the engineer's path, he will stop in his tracks like a dumbass!
Build another power plant near the factory (and to the right)
Build a watch tower and place it so it covers the second spike fairly well.

Build a command post
Build a tech center
Build a power plant and the sonic towers.
Build two predators

Upgrade all of your existing power plants while you build a crane
Keep building power and sonic towers to defend yourself.
Add to that some watchtowers for infantry.

Build a surveyor

Send 1 predator to each corner.
If you see an enemy base, pull it back and leave it as support at that end of your base
If you see a clear tiberium field, send the surveyor there

You want an armory, zone trooper upgrades, a space station, and the rail gun upgrade
You also want another tiberium refinery.

Build an ion cannon linkup dealie
Crank out mammoths and more power and towers.

Do not worry about air attacks
They don't happen for a long time.
If they DO happen, use pitbulls, and grab the mortar upgrade.
Do not use anti air towers unless you have the money for them.

When you have some spare cash, build up mammoths and zone troopers

I recommend a second war factory near your second tiberium field, right next to the refinery to heal any damaged harvesters.

Once your ion cannon is ready, do a radar scan and take out their first base.
A zone trooper dispatch after the blast should take care of most of the base, if not all of it.
Send in mammoths to clean up.

Either capture the spikes and guard with 1 mammoth each, or destroy them.

From there, march all your (non guarding) mammoths in to the opponents base.

If they build a temple of nod, don't worry. The ion cannon is faster.
Lob the EMP shockwave at their power plants if you can get a lot of them, or directly at the temple.

If it's very well guarded and they got it up before your first ion cannon blast, build 10 juggernauts )stop mammoth production) and sneak some snipers in at the edge of the base. You can use the juggernaut ability on structures to rape hard and fast.

Use whatever support powers you want to clean up stragglers, but keep in mind the most important one you have (besides the ion cannon) is the zone troopers, and possibly the sniper drop (if you have juggernauts)

Remember:
C = repair - USE IT!
And use the hotkeys.
e, F2 at the beginning of the game.
Before it's done, position mouse where you want to place it
When it's done, F2, click, F1.

This is only important in the early game where you have to rush to get to the sonic towers.
If you can get a few of those up before your base is eaten, you're golden.
They come at you from the center path until you take out their main base.
Just hold out.

wtf? Why do people wait to build crane?

That's my first build item.

Rush out the crane, get out ref, powerplant, get out barracks while ref finishes building, pump out 2 engineers, 2 infantry to protect the tower from maruading engineers, then go for warplant, more power, then a few harvesters, then the command post; have a couple machine gun towers on the way to take care of the early game rush.
Here's a good point to pump out infantry to garrison buildings infront of the base. a few missle troops and infantry, will help serve as forward warning and harassment to give you more time to react.

i'm such a C&C whore

i can barely run this on my laptop, had to set everything to the lowest possible. It looks ****inig hideous, like C&C 1, yet I can't stop playing it!

That was me being slightly tard'd. The game doesn't even have 5.1 as far as I can tell.

after all the "EA is driving another franchise into the ground" talk, it sounds like C&C is back!!!!!!!!!!

I'm dling now!!!!!!! WHOOHOO, i'll beat supreme commander probably before it comes out anyway.

current corporate EA has pulled of some pretty great games, among a lot of trite shit. It's kinda their M.O.

Lets see them bring back Ultima, Wing Commander, Syndicate back before we start crowing about their triumphant return to form.

Syndicate would actually work really well with this or modified engine.

Syndicate is one of the meanest games ever and needs to preserve its cruelty. I can't see the current EA approbing of a game where you burn docens civilians to ashes just so you can steal an ambulance, approximate in disguise to some politician and kill it so your corporation can keep exploiting the country. After all, this is the company that took the blood out of C&C.

I loved the demo, but I was actually quite fond of how in Generals to use a power you had to first earn it by battle experience. Here just creating a building will grant you those powers.

In that respect, if feels like a step backwards.

i really looked forward to this game until this demo! but what i've seen in this demo was far away from impressive in my opinion!

ok, it flashs everyone with its effects, but that's it.

The unit design isn't as good as in the prequels. The videos are crappy.

But the biggest mess is the missing physics engine! What the hell? If i destroy a building it is always the same animation! all the rubbles (?) fall exactly the same.

the unit movement isn't really great doing because of these damn squads. I hated them in Lotr already, but there it wasn that bad if one was killed. they reproduce fast enought there!
But in CnC these squads are really bad. Where are the single units :(

Really, I wanted to buy this game day one, but now i save the money instead for another one! Perhaps the Company of Heroes Addon, if there will be one.

I'm really disappointed. I expected much more!

A few things I didn't know /fully understand until I read the readme:

Patrols:
Enter planning mode and make a set of waypoints so the lest one connects to the first one. (A loop). When you exit planning mode, your units will patrol that path indefinately.

Formations:
Select your units, and select your move method (A for attack move, for example), and then hold both the left and right mouse buttons where you want your units to move to.
Moving the mouse around cycles through different formations. Release to issue orders and have your units hold that formation. I've noticed it doesn't really work too well if your units encounter enemies along the way.

Beacons:
When playing with an AI ally (when the full game is released) place a beacon to have your AI friend send a squad of units to that location to help you out.

Hard vs Brutal:
The Brutal mode is the same as hard mode, except that it has a "cash bonus". No wonder they can churn out endless tanks at the beginning of the game.

Suppression:
I've noticed this but didn't actually read the explanation. Basically, infantry will lie prone when faced with more powerful munitions landing around them. This results in them taking far less damage than they would normally. You can use this to your advantage if you see a large mass of infantry coming at you. Spread your fire out so they are all under supression (instead of focusing on one group at a time). They will lie prone and stop advancing toward you. If you are under supression, take out the more powerful units to allow your infantry to advance. Being under supression also reduces the damage you take from anti-infantry units and defenses, but not by much. If you force your units to move out of supression, they will be extremely vulnerable, even to attacks that are otherwise not very effective against infantry.

Cover:
Infantry squads placed near (not garrisoned in) structures will take cover behind corners, vehicles, etc. and will be nearly impossible to suppress. Use this to your dvantage when you see squads of building-clearing units, such as grenadiers, black hand, or flame tanks.
Being inside the structure provides more defense and range, but being outside prevents a single attack from clearing out all of your troops (I think...). Surrounding a structure is also a great way to get around the "3-units per structure" bull crap. Consider having snipers take cover around buildings. They are stealthed, so black hand and grenadier squads won't see it coming.

Armor:
Tanks take more damage on the sides, and much more damage in the rear.

Cover is just a natural dynamic? Eg; If you're near a car, you simply gain a bonus? Do they visually appear to take cover? (I can't load up the demo and check atm.)

One tactic that I thought sounded interesting was the forward-facing retreat... Quite literally the description said it's used to retreat yet no expose a weaker side (for units with higher defense ratings for their front).

This reminds me of BFME2

Sweet game, marred by craptastic multiplayer implementation

It was totally awesome if you loved playing 1v1 ladder matches and 2v2 ladder matches... with random teams

It sucked unholy ass if you wanted to play with friend(s)

Both because the game/netcode couldn't handle much more than 2v2, and because it lacked any sort of arranged teams automatch at all, and they never got around to adding it

Was very frustrating. Hope they don't repeat the mistake this time. I'm sure they will.

this game is too easy. hopefully in the full release you can stop the AI FROM RUSHING THE WHOLE TIME. That is what makes the game just too easy because they don't have good base defense. All you have to do is build a good base defense and unlock drop zone troopers. With the radar scan you find the construction yard and destroy it with zone troopers/ air attack. :D

For all you having trouble beating it on hard. Its best to go set up a second base in the southeast corner right when the game starts.

I haven't been able to play the demo, yet. The first time I played, my gfx card in my laptop (x1800) overheated :P

EDIT: I was able to install in Vista....

Finally EA does some justice to the series, Generals felt like a totally different game...

Currently in demo, AI still does some stupid stuff, i.e. expanding bases into my towers, building 4 ore refineries, etc.

However, it is nice to see FMV's finally come back, and that we do see a RA like feel, the old units are back but its a bit topsy turvy. Mammoth tanks in GDI, "prism tanks" in Nod. But its good to see that they did change something to the old C&C. I.e. 2 war factories really work like 2 war factories, no just 1 with a faster rate, and i love the NOD air base.

It does hint a tiny bit like generals when i saw the kamikaze infantry and bikes from Nod. anyone know a good way to counter them? currently my solution is to drop sensor mines further away from towers, so that it starts shooting earlier....

It will be a game that will gain quite a huge popularity in Lan shops, as it is rather fast paced, and will end pretty fast. Nukes and ion cannons seem to be very very game ending. Do NOT compare this to supcom thou, i feel they appeal to different demographics.

Finally beat this motherfocker on Brutal mode.

Brutal mode cheats like hell with its 10k per 90 seconds cash infusion.

At the end, I had mined over 450k resources, having stripped the battle field multiple times over, while the computer sat at 1.2 million over.

I had to play nod though... their turrets are much better are messing with the computer than the GDI's, as the computer tends to target the individual turrets as opposed to the main body quite often.

An incredible amount of base defense is needed IMO... for about 15 minutes, all I could do was build base defenses. Then built about 10 double beam laser avatars... yeah, they didn't fare so well against their fliers, so those guys died. Hit them with a nuke as well. Unfortunately weren't able to kill them entirely, so during the time I tried raising a second army, they managed to resurrect with the cash infusions. Moreover, they continued to pound the hell out of my base while doing so, and even managed to land a nuke on me...

Took me an extra 40 minutes to get the win, having to recover from no resources except for the 15 resources per second tiberium spike a couple times, and rebuild my secondary base.

Was a satisfying win.

Still...
Mammoth tanks >>> Avatars

probably has been said before:

in skirmish-mode press n and click while your over nod with the mouse when choosing your fraction.

you can also change the AI to GDI with pressing G...
