Condemned 1 & 2 or The Darkness 1 & 2 | Which series would you prefer gets remade?

Condemned for the detective gameplay, The Darkness for the story and comic book style

Both Condemned games and both Darkness games are great.

Condemned 1 can be played at 4K120 and it even had a widescreen UI mod and AI enhanced textures mod. It's absolutely playable. Condemned 2 is stuck on consoles, but can be emulated at higher resolutons and unlocked fps nowadays, like 120 fps.

Darkness 1 is stuck on consoles. It can be played at 60 fps on RPCS3, but resolution scaling isn't possible. It would benefit more from a remaster.

I don't remember much about the darkness 1. Other than some fella called Jackie(?) chatting absolute shite about his-a momma's a spicy meatballs, or concrete shoes during the loading screens.

Condemned for sure. I played through both of those games twice on the 360 and really enjoyed the atmosphere. I think it was Yahtzee who said something like "You can feel that this game hates you" - Perfect encapsulation.

I thought The Darkness was forgettable aside from Mike Paton's voice work (which was fantastic).

Both series. But Condemned 2 really hit the spot for me, I'm not sure exactly why but I loved the weirdness of that game and how brutal it was.

A real rollercoaster. The Darkness was incredible too, Condemned 1 didn't click as much.

If I had to choose, Condemned 2.

Condemned especially the first game.
It has the only in game jumpscare that worked on me.
I loved the brutality and intensity of the fights.
The second game was good but had too much guns.

the only thing I remember from the darkness games is that it was violent and somewhat cartoonish.

Condemned with 2025 graphics would be nuts! ❤️

I liked The Darkness 1 a lot, despite not being faithful to the comics.

Condemned 2 was also a great game. I'd dig a Darkness reboot with realistic graphics and closer plot-wise to the source material, with a crossover with Witchblade.
I loved it specifically because it moved away from the comics. I remember reading through some of the comics included as bonus material and thinking, "yeah, they did right tossing this."

I prefer tragic and empathetic Jackie over supreme edgelord sitting-on-a-throne-surrounded-by-trophy-women Jackie. The plot hit hard because I felt bad for the poor idiot and his doomed romance with the saccharine-sweet Jenny.

The simple things we want get ruined by forces that we cannot control. It's an effective setup that pulls the heartstrings.

Both Condemned and The Darkness got rancid sequels. It'd be nice to completely redo both of those games, honestly. There's a happy compromise.

Neither. Make something new.

(And I loved the first Condemned which is saying something, as that is NOT my type of game usually.)

I'd want condemned remade and a third entry to be more similar in tone to the first one. So many memorable moments in the condemned games!

The Darkness games. I didn't care for the Condemned games, the movement sucked, the combat was awful (seriously, a lead pipe breaking after two swipes? who comes up with this shit?) and the story was boring.

I'd actually like a 3rd Darkness game, cause IIRC the 2nd one ended on a cliffhanger.

Another game series I'd like to see a remaster or remake of would the Suffering games. Now those were excellent.

Condemned for sure. Darkness was great too, but I think Condemned was more unique. Also for some reason the first Condemned had only 970 gamerscore so it would be nice to get a full 1000 from it.

You did it right.
Condemned 1 is the only Condemned.

Yeah, I remember getting 2 a few days before heading to Afghanistan and wanting to finish it but gave up in some kind of circus. I just didnt like how they changed up Ethan and how dark some areas were with those stupid oil monsters. 1 is one of the best horror games ever made.

Condemned 1 is incredible. Truly a special game.

For first time players now looking at it, I highly recommend playing on Xbox, or emulating that version with Xenia (this game runs perfectly). The PC port was shit. Broken spacial audio that can't be fixed with EAX plugins, missing or replacement PC graphical effects that looks worse and glitch out, and no controller support (at least not very good support, anyway).
Even with the few community fixes available, the emulated 360 game is better.

Haven't played The Darkness since release, but I remember loving the atmosphere and stellar storytelling.

It's hard to choose, lol. I'd just want the first of both. But the more I think about it, if I had to choose, maybe The Darkness more so... :pie_thinking:

I'm genuinely shocked. The first Darkness and Condemned were talked about for a long while. The sequels, however, were pretty eh. I personally feel like the Condemned one was better than the Darkness one.
Both sequels are inferior games but the pure gameplay aspect was better and more varied.

They felt like ps5 era sony sequels.

The Darkness should have always been a third person action or action rpg game where you summon various darklings to assist to you in combat. Like this game, but better:

Recently tried to play with condemned 1
but the game froze regularly. such a shame!!
will try again some other time

Both fear extraction point and condemned 1 froze the same way

I'd pick Condemned but I do love both Condemned 1 and The Darkness 1. Condemned though is one of the finest action horror games of all time which shouldn't be a surprise since it's from the god tier Monolith Productions (RIP).

I remember not liking either sequel though. Maybe I should go back and try them. I know I own both Darkness games on Series X and I got a Xbox 360 (beautiful Halo Reach model) in my basement somewhere.

Condemned 2 because it was never released on PC/Steam, strangely enough. Only played the first but it was excellent.
I don't think it's all that strange given the time in which it released.
The Xbox 360 and PS3 were the primary platforms at this time so PC was already an afterthought for many.
I was curious so I did a quick google search and it appears that Condemned sold pretty bad on PC so SEGA didn't think PC was worth the effort.

PC? I remember the PC port of Condemned being absolute shit without mods but I could be remembering wrong.

No, you're right. It's still worse than the 360 version even with the few fixes available now. Spacial and reverb sound can't be fixed like it can in most games of the era with EAX DLLs, and there are glitches with the replacement (technically superior, but look worse) shadows, and also lighting glitches. I had issues with saving too when I played on PC.

Normally I'd always recommend a native PC port over emulation, but the 360 version runs perfectly on Xenia. Can easily hold 60fps 2x native resolution (1440p) on my 3060 / 5700X.
You won't have any of the issues that the PC port has, and you get perfect controller support.

This is so underrated. So many PC ports of that era (and unsurprisingly earlier but also annoyingly later) have either terrible controller support or just none at all.

Despite having played on both console and PC my entire life if it's a game I originally played on console I have to play it on controller which makes playing pc ports quite shit sometimes.

Now if only I could come around on emulation.

Yeah, both deserve a remaster for sure, but The Darkness would win IMHO if we had to choose which series to remaster.

I would like for Nightdive to do remasters of both series as they would be available to many more people for many years to come and they care about the original feel of the experience.

all of them, but I am also scared that it would be remaked for "modern audiences"

I suppose, they were just so inferior to me that it was hard to really accept anything that was "better" about them as a result.

I played all four and loved them. My least favorite, I'd say, was The Darkness 2.

In Condemned 2, the story was weird, but the manufacturing level of the dolls and the bear made up for it.

Or this game if you remember it:

That was a decently fun little romp but it didn't hold me.

The Darkness 1, on the other hand, I've beaten three times, and though I ultimately found the second disappointing I still gave it two playthroughs.

1, in particular, is just a damn good game. I consider it something of a spiritual successor to the Riddick games.

Speaking of games needing remasters.

Both of the Riddick games are amazing and both are hard to play or stuck on old platforms.

PC version has been delisted everywhere and while it can be found most people won't go through that trouble and I had countless issues getting it to run let along run properly with controller so I ended up buying a 360 copy last year to replay both of them.

I did not think about the whole serie angle but you are right, if only one of those two franchises was to be remade, it has to be the Darkness.

The Darkness had better consistency in terms of fun, but the first condemned was also great. Condemned 2 just wasn't quite as good. I would be more hyped for a The Darkness 3,. Condemned was great, but is much more story dependent. If the story isn't great, the game isn't quite as good.
