Confirmed: Dark Souls PC to migrate from GFWL to Steam in Nov (Details in OP)

Apparently the import of saves and achievements is what's slowing them down the most.
Incidentally, it's also what interests me the least about this migration.

Even ignoring how personally I would love to have the chance for all the PC community to restart from zero at the same time, quite frankly I would prefer by far too see their efforts going into implementing arbitrary resolution and framerate into the native client, rather than taking weeks just for an import/compatibility tool.

People would be furious if they lost all of their saves and achievements. I get that it's not a priority for you, but there is definitely a subset who would be pissed to lose all of that. Dark Souls achievements don't come easy and those are important to some people. And there are plenty of people who have put hundreds of hours into characters that would be a shame to have disappear.

I hope they hurry. I've been itching to replay Dark Souls again, and this time on PC!

I hope they either implement arbitrary resolutions/high framerate support or that DSfix still works. If not, you'll probably be having a lesser experience than the current version because current DS on PC is great.

Well, no, it's different.
It isn't just "not a priority". I would actually *love* a reset that would encourage a consistant part of the community to be active once again.

But that's a side note. The whole problem is that technical improvements would be everlasting, while importing saves and achievements it's... well, mostly useless bullshit.

I would say not breaking save games for an 80 hour game out of the blue is more than useless bullshit. I'd be quite annoyed if I were halfway through a playthrough and an automatic Steam update destroyed my save.

I don't think save importing on a game as long and difficult as Dark Souls is anything close to useless bullshit. I've got a huge attachment to my doofy looking character because I've spent over 100 hours with them. I'd hate to lose that because they wanted to ship a month earlier.

So seems like I'll be playing it for the first time next month. Then Bloodborne in February and when is Dark Souls 2 coming out again?

I don't care about importing achievements or saves, I'll start fresh either way. But I can understand the need especially if you are in the middle of the run.

But if that's the thing that's delaying it, and the rest of the steamworks conversion is ready to go, it would be pretty rad if they added a way for us to opt-in to that build.

I just saw this thread now...

So, is there a chance for the save games to stop working? Even if there is a small chance for this to happen, im not doing it.

Yeah, it's unacceptable to forceably invalidate people's saves. However, it's almost as unacceptable to not implement selectable resolutions after they've been shown how to do it, and have since demonstrated that they can with DS2.

I'm hoping Durante can fic the resolution if there's a problem in that. As for framerate, yeah that might be a problem. I got pretty used to 60 FPS in DS II.

It isn't optional.

It will be funny when the game gets worse with steamworks like SSFIV and people start missing GFWL.

Well, if you don't transfer them you have a 100% guarantee that they won't work.

I've got three bosses left to beat in the PC version (Manus, Seath and Gwynn), and I'll be damned if they're gonna corrupt my save file for this. This better work right.

Time to give this game a replay since Namco wants to piss on the Dark Souls 2 userbase.

Hoping if someone unlocks the framerate that it actually works for me this time.

Anybody having trouble finding their GFWL tokens because GFWLClient can't connect to microsoft?

If I can't find my tokens, I don't see how the redemption process will work.

I've completed the game with four different builds, NG+ with two of them.

I still wouldn't mind simply because I actually love playing the game, so the "Oh, no, I'll have to play it once again" scenario doesn't exactly sound as nightmare fuel to me.
I did the same with the two Batman. Loved every minute with them, too.

Direct2Play, which sent me a steam key.

I think you'll only need it if you don't have the Steam version of the game though.

I'm confused. The game patches itself but i'm the one who has to do the save-transfer thing?

Sorry for double post

Yeah, afaik Namco will offer a tool that will transfer it for you for a limited time (The limited time thing might be just the achievements, I'm not sure :P)

Direct2Play, which sent me a steam key.

You don't need the token if it's in your Steam library, that one will get patched on its own. However, it might turn out to be a situation akin to Street Fighter 4 AE. People could give away the GFWL keys which could then be registered on Steam as a completely new copy.

Good thing you get the option of starting with a clean slate then :P

Are there any steps that have to be done manually if you have the Steam version already?

If you have the game on Steam, you don't need LIVE tokens or anything.

We don't know how exactly the migration will work yet.

I expect they built some kind of in-game migration system to the hybrid build that's up in the steamdb. Maybe you select a save from your "load game" list and press RT to import it or something. But we don't know.

In a game which encourages NG+ play even completed save files are very valuable. So keeping those is very important, more then any other feature in my opinion. I'm glad thier taking the time to do it.

Did I misss something? I haven't kept up with DS2 at all. What is Namco doing?

They new GotY package dealio they announced recently with upgraded graphics will be sold separately and (IIRC), the saves wont be compatible. Just going off what I read in the thread for that last part.

I don't mind restarting new saves, on the contrary, but I've grown kind of attached to my characters, so I'd hate losing them... especially my SL1 one.

What are the chances of them bringing graphics options to the game along with the Steamworks switch? I know of DSfix but I would still prefer something official so I can tinker with options from within the game.

Since they are pretty terrible at communicating their intent, we can just guess.
Resolution support is (in my opinion) reasonably likely, mostly because it would hardly require any significant effort on their part.
60+ fps support on the other hand... I wouldn't really bet on that.

What? A game like Dark Souls has basically nothing saved in terms of world-state.

Meaning that the save merely contains your inventory and statistics. Importing this should be trivial AT WORST.

What might be slightly more complex is to touch code about online integration, since that PC port code must be already a complete mess.

He's not saiying that the importing is dificult, but that the game itself is dificult, so the importing is more important.

Like Unaigamer said, I wasn't saying porting the saves over would be difficult. I have no way of knowing that. I was saying that because the game is very long and difficult, I'm sure a lot of players value their save files because of the amount of time and effort they've put into them.

The update removing GFWL is now live as a beta for Dark Souls on Steam. Excerpt from the official announcement:

Dear Dark Souls fans,

You can now update your Dark Souls™ Prepare To Die Edition for PC game to replace the Games for Windows Live functionality with Steamworks functionality. The update is available from today – December 15th and will let you keep both your Save Data and Achievements.
Please read below or visit http://steamcommunity.com/app/211420/discussions/0/626329187083042093/ to read the update process.

Now I only want Resident Evil 5. The other ones would be good as well, but I'm personally only interested in RE5.
