Considering the time period, what is the best game ever made?

I'm still thinking that it's Mario 64. It's just the first game that comes to mind when I think of a gamers game that managed to still shock the casuals into playing. It's a game that everyone loved, young and old. I guess the same could be said about the original SMB, but it did have the benefit of coming with the NES...

SM64 all the way.

my favs
streetfighter series-always a classic
tecmo bowl- always a classic. Run home from class in high school 2 play against the homies
castlevania-always went to my cousins house to play it
r.c. pro am- got me into the car games
super mario bros series.
nba jam- spent alot of money at the arcades trying to be top guy in the arcades
final fantasy 7 :D

Original Legend of Zelda. Everything about it was magical at the time. Its hard to believe a title that good could be released in 1985. I think LoZ was helped by the fact that there was a limited amount of information "out there". So you really had to try to find stuff on your own. If you got stuck on something for 2-3 hours, there wasn't a Gamefaqs to hold your hand through it. Its one of the few times in gaming where I felt like I "accomplished" something real when I beat it.

Honorable mention: Pirates! (C-64), Mario64, Ultima 4.

Mario64 is more of a technical miracle than a gameplay miracle. The fact that the control was TIGHT in a first generation 3D title is amazing.

Robotron. Perfect for the era of endlessly-playable twitch games, a great balance between score and risk.

Grand Theft Auto:VC The potential of a massive 3D environment achieved at last

Nethack-- being text, could have been made anytime. best random dungeon crawl ever.

Wipeout 1: when 3D was just taking off, this game utized it perfectly, to take the F-Zero/Merio Kart formula (clear inspiration for the series) to new levels of intensity. Beating the Antartic track was exactly the right amount of challenge.

Super mario 3: really pushing the limits of what the tech could do to make an experience worlds beyond SMB or the Lost levels.

Ultima 7 was a mind-blowing RPG at the time, really held so much promise for the future, little of which was actually every followed up upon sadly.

Pirates is another great one.

25, btw.

I've never liked Mario 64. Not when it came out, not now. I think it lacked much of the charm and depth of SMW, and if anything, the game was harmed by the transition to 3d.

Nice to see the Ultima Online love. Yes that is one of the best. :)

Spacewar (1961)

How awesome was this game? It sparked the invention of the joystick:

You played it on an oscilliscope, which gives it extra cool points:

(The "CBS Opening" maneuver.)

It was inspired by rabid E.E. "Doc" Smith fans at MIT:

In short, in the early 60's it was the absolute coolest thing you had ever seen. Or, at least, so I gather - I wasn't alive then. Still, considering the time period, it's impressive as all hell. Tons of info about Spacewar await you here. And, if the mood strikes you, you can go play Spacewar online here.

It's a real tough choice between Nethack and Elite, but in the end I'd have to go with Nethack. Elite was truly technically impressive for the time, and had open-ended gameplay way before its time, but Nethack is simply unparalleled even today in the sheer variety of options for the player and things that can happen. Where else can you polymorph yourself into a monster, lay eggs, hatch them, then raise the hatchlings to adulthood as your loyal pets by feeding them the corpses of your enemies? The phrase "emergent gameplay" is a relatively recent one, but Nethack is still the best example of it after all these years.

Oh, err, and I'm 35.

That's exactly why I listed nethack as well.

Also why GTA is on my list. Not as varied, obviously, but similarly fun.

SMB3 is almost the exaclt opposite, but also great. Everything in it is planted for you to discover, like a giant treasure hunt scripted by a benevolent God of Fun.

For me it has to be:

Super Mario Bros 3 - Man the gameplay..
Super Mario 64.. Duh...
LOZ: Link to the Past.. Duh²
Metal Gear Solid.. Immersive with great storytelling
Final Fantasy VI aka III ... Duh³

and a honorable mention for the most addictive sob ever made, great then and still great now:

Tetris. This game is so amazingly fun, addictive, and simple, u don't even care that it requires the barest of graphics to play it.

Honorable Mentions:
Mario 64
SMB
SMB3
LoZ

I'm going crazy trying to find around the intro of the awesome game ELITE (Amiga ver. for example).

I remember that Blue Danube intro. I was so amazed the first time i've seen/heard it.
Can you help me? :)
Thanks

Jesus, I can't believe someone mentioned Shenmue. :( There's no accounting for bad taste, I guess. :lol

For me, it's between Gran Turismo and Vagrant Story. GT was simply the most astonishing racing game I've ever played. For its time, it sold almost exclusively on word of mouth. It had crushed multi-platinum status before I ever saw a single commercial on tv. It devoured almost an entire month of my life. It was so deep and feature-rich it totally redefined what we expect to get in a racer. Between the car library and extra-racing features, it simply can't be beat IMO.

Vagrant Story is something else for me. It's a work of art. I love the art style in the game. Considering how cool the sketches were, I think they Square artists did a fab job of recreating them with the meager polygon budget the PS1 had. And the story I found enthralling. The battle system was very cool, and I rather enjoyed the weapons collecting and modifications. The difficulty wasn't that great, and the "purists" will probably menstruate more about how linear the game is, but the end still has me begging for me. The most underrated game in the PS1 library, and Square is doing the world a disservice by not making a sequel. I mean, we've yet to hear the story of The Vagrant. The PS2 would give the characters a whole new life, and I'd buy a PSTwo for this game. PEACE.

EDIT: And just to be clear, I would rank SMB3 as the greatest game of all-time b/c of its absolutely massive cultural impact at the time, but I figured it was gonna get plenty of love in here, so I had to mention some of the underdogs. ;)

Ever? SMB3. Super Mario World was quite the letdown in comparison. (Still a decent platformer, but it felt like quite a step backward in many respects.)

SMB3 had so much going for it in both promotion (such a memorable commercial, and the big reveal scene in The Wizard) and game design (tons of cleverly-designed levels with all sorts of hidden areas and tricks, with a good mix of slow and quick gameplay pacing... and who can forget seeing Bowser's armada roll at you... and float... and fly...), that's the one I'd rank above all others.

Plus, the Hammer Suit was one of the coolest game powerups ever. I mean, really. (Not counting the Kuribo Shoe, since that was more of a temporary advantage, but also insanely enjoyable.)
