Console pricing has gone terribly wrong | Opinion [Gi.biz]

I'm more annoyed at game prices at the moment than hardware. Although I may be bitchin when the PS6 comes out.

One of the main reasons I've almost exclusively switched to game flying new releases. I'm not spending $70 to $80 on every new game I want to play, and then try to resell it at an acceptable price two weeks later.

It's just a lot easier to play what I want to and then return it, if there's something I want to keep, that option is always there too.

Not really. Its sold at a profit, anticipated 10-20% volume of base model.
I can't find any recent numbers anywhere, and when Sony decided to just bundaru them in with all other PS5 sales that wasn't a good sign. Only thing I see is people saying it is performing under what PS4 Pro did, and didn't it only account for something like 5% of total PS4 sales? If that's what is up, then the totals really are low for PS5 Pro.

I know in Japan it is performing abysmally.

Compared to skewed data because most of those kids play games on their tablets, phones and laptops when they're bored at school without access to their consoles?

Console bought by Gen X and Millenials (parents). Youth is not interested in the same type of experiences as we are (old farts) and they won't buy consoles (and gaming pcs) and games in similar amounts.

All console manufacturers are in for some rude awakening after PS6 gen.

Console gaming will die out with our generation (80/90s kids) and thats ok! Its all a bloated mess anyway, time to burn it down.

I don't know what I will play 15-20 years from now. Maybe finally clear the backlog? Hahaha...

Well there's absolutely no reason to issue figures when essentially its just another SKU. Its not like it needs to support an ecosystem by itself.

And it selling less than the PS4 Pro should be no surprise when the price premium is larger.

The thing that people seem to overlook is that its not something that can get a "killer app" without the stock PS5 version being perceived as disappointing and thus demanding the additional power.

Like most high-end product options its not an offer that is going to get judged by volume, its more a marketing and R+D exercise.

We'll see.

If the UK market is anything to go by, console gaming is slightly increasing and PC slightly decreasing and the Gen Z demographic is the same size as ~40-60 yo ( Gen X) or something like that.

I think what you say is mostly wishfull thinking from a PC-centric demographic.

Then again, making predictions for post-PS6 is crystal ball territory.

I don't care about PC sales, or any sales at all for that matter.

I only care if products that I like are successful or not. Some years from now traditional SP and MP games will die because young people don't give a fuck about them.

I think the problem is people are happy with what they have. The PS4 is still being used by millions of gamers with no real push to buy a PS5…even 4 years after launch. I really don't see myself buying the next consoles at launch because I'm very content with what I have now.

There is a reason many rumors point to a portable/affordable version of the next generation of consoles.

However, it does feel like that Capcom quote was a cop out of the fact that the game had poor optimization and the gameplay got so simplified that lost it's appeal to long time fans.

Weird takes, but to each their own.

If consoles die, I'll buy a PC. If gaming dies, I'll find something else to do.

Just here to enjoy the ride as long as it lasts.✌🏾

This is how you talk out of your ASS.

"Sonys/Microsofts hardware is expensive! Thats why the game isn't selling as we expected."

"Using older hardware is the obvious solution."

"OK boys. Make the game for the expensive cutting-edge platforms, and let's totally ignore the MUCH cheaper switch 1, with its 160million install base, which we could have then sold a 20$ upgrade pack for all the new switch2 users."

Some of these companies are run by fucking idiots.

I am not rooting for this. The fact is, some people will not be able to afford consoles if the prices keep rising regardless of if they want to or not. Those people will be looking for ways to play games and consoles are easier to skip than a phone or a PC. You can talk about shitty screens all you want but even cheaper phones have really good screens these days. Will that translate to big screens? No. Do I think consoles will disappear completely? No. Do I believe consoles can see a significant drop in users if costs continue to rise? Yes.
It's not about quality of screen, it's about quality of image (graphics settings). And picture quality is quite low, significantly downgraded from console/PC IQ.
And you missed part about "light" consoles. Basically I expect for consoles to stabilize in 3 tiers, that are slowly upgraded in features and minor improvement in raw performance - 300$ layer, 500$ layer and 700$ layer (light. vanilla and pro models).

The biggest problem phones have right now is their software market is saturated with a lot of crap and currently phone gamers do not want to pay a premium price for a title regardless of how good it is. Good luck getting them to pay $70 for a single player game (of course they will easily spend that much on something like Roblox). So, in that regard, maybe phones fail too when it comes to traditional games. There is always streaming but even if it takes off, it does little to keep console sales as high as they are now.
Mobile have almost all live service games and those are a future. So they are and will be just fine. And as those live service games show - being available on mobile is good for portability and payerbase expansion, but even though most players are on mobile, most revenue are not. Those who can afford, and it's not only "rich", play on big screen and it's different platforms.

Fortnite biggest revenue platform is playstation
If you want to play on a big screen, and people generally like big screen gaming, consoles are best option.
Most of playstation revenue/play hours already from live service games - those type of experiences liked by younger generations.
