Constantly Dropped Dial-up Connection: Advice?

I'm on dirty old dial-up at home, and for the past few months I've been experiencing constant irritating connection drops that seem to come from nowhere. I've disabled my firewall, updated my modem drivers, doublechecked the idle settings, and even changed ISPs, and it still occurs frequently -- sometimes several times in the space of ten or twenty minutes. I haven't changed any aspects of my system lately (adding possible conflicting hardware, changed my IP settings, etc.), so I'm really at a loss as to what the trouble could be.

Any takers? Thanks in advance, I appreciate it.

Are you having any issues with noise on the line? If you're getting static, humming, etc it can cause issues where the line will drop. If you are having noise issues on the line, call your phone provider. Even if it's not enough noise to really effect regular phone conversation it can have a huge effect on dial up connections.

Hmm, that's a good idea -- it hadn't even occurred to be that it could be a physical line problem.

I also lowered the buffer settings on the COM4 port that my modem is on to see if that does the trick.

- Try removing everything from the line except for your modem and see if the problem still happens, if it doesn't, then one of those devices could be interferring with the modem.

- Make sure you don't have call waiting enabled (I don't know how call waiting works in your country, but here if it's enabled it will mean that if you receive a call, it will bump you off the net)

What sort of modem is it that you have? I might be able to look up a string for you to put into your advanced modem settings to slow it down a little and hopefully keep it more stable.
