Convergence? PS3 & Xbox2 misguided...Nintendo on the right path!

Rumors are the Revolution will play DVDs... connect to a pc/or monitor... thats all I heard.

Nintendo is in the unique possition of not having an agenda with with music, movies and other non-gaming functions. I think they've finally realized that. In the past they wouldn't even think of doing what they're doing now. Now they're allowing GBA video, hell they're even making a GBA MP3/MPEG player themselves...that play SD cards (instead of some goofy format that they themselves created), they even allowed WiFi in NDS, they're also allowing the Revolution to be hooked up to a PC monitor (not that that's such a big deal, but the old Nintendo wouldn't have done it), there's even talk of dictionary, PDA & translator functions with the NDS. Without having an agenda in the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD "war" they also find themselves in a possibly advantaged possition. I think Nintendo will also allow at least DVD playback and embrace online (wireless) gaming with not only portables...but with Revolution as well.

When's the last time they've actually come out and said "covergence is bad"? Not that they've changed their philosophies...just that I think they realize that there's nothing to lose by offering non-gaming functions here and there. Will Revolution do V-O-D, be a TiVo and be a TV-PC? Certainly not, but maybe Nintendo will lean back on their console routes (Famicom Family COMPUTER/NES Nintendo ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM).

The problem with convergence is that it always comes at the cost of something. The more features you have the more likely they are to be badly implemented. The PS2 is a mediocre DVD player and a mediocre game system. The N-Gage is an awful game system and an awful phone. Convergence does make sense some times and it can certainly be used effectively in marketing but dedicated devices generally offer the best quality. Not just in regards to game systems.

While the PS2 dvd playback is not the greatest it is still a nice featue, and as for PS2 being a mediocore game system I think thier a millions of layers that disagree. The games look just as good on the PS2 as they do on the Gamecube.

If it works add it in. Like the DVd player.

If Nintendo can add a HD to the next GB then do so for example.

I do think Nintendo is on the right way. Which of the 3 companies is making the most money when you only count te gaming-sector? I do think it's Nintendo.
Everybody can think Nintendo is third or whatever, but they are making money, something Microsoft doesn't and Sony sometimes does.

Actually Nintendo has been making money becuase of the handheld area. The Gamecube hasn't made Nintendo a ton of money, Also up to now Nintendo has had the Handheld Market all to themselves these past two generations. Only time wil tell whose strategies will reaps success, sony's or Nintendo's.

They make a ton off GC actually. Software sales are huge as well.

The lack of multimedia functions is not the reason for Nintendo losing marketshare.

When you have close to 100% marketshare it can't very well increase.

On paper perhaps. In reality I doubt that many people actually take advantage of it. In fact, in today's market where you can get substantially better dedicated players for much less I doubt it's a factor to most buyers (unlike when it launched). What you have to keep in mind is that DVD playback doesn't come for free. It's an extra feature that adds to the overall cost of the system. Money that could have been spent on hardware instead or QA or price reductions.

GameCube by design is a vastly superior gaming platform. Not so much in terms of performance which is largely explained by the year that seperates each system. GameCube is simply a better design from the inside and out. From the back end to the front end. I'm not arguing that PS2 has great games. But those games could be just as good if not better on the GameCube.

why would you want that Ps3, xbox2 and revolution all had the same capabilities, all did the same things etc? If Nintendo does something different from ps3 and xbox2, and that it actually works it's a good thing for the consumer.

Early this generation we had that unique beast of DVD, begging for everyone to not only start replaceing their VHS .... but for them to actually start collecting.
DVD is smart, functional, and easy so consoles sporting the ability to play them back certainly had an advantage....

Now that everyones got an um-teen # of DVD players in their home, whats the next real breakthrough that consoles can offer outside of games???

I certainly don't see anything as revolutionary in the pipeline ... people just want their games now.
