Resident evil 9 path tracing on ps5 pro?

« Technically can » is rarely the kind of praise you need for a full fledged game to have path tracing

Switch 2 « technically can »

So I'm gonna go with no. Unless the game visuals are super simplified

The developer of War Thunder has said the PS5 Pro can run path tracing, but you would need a 'highly optimized strategy for doing it' due to the perf hit.

The article is from last year. Here is the relevant parts:

"Technically, it could; the only question is with performance. It is a decision for the future, though. First, we focus on releasing RT support for consoles, with all the effects except PTGI (hopefully very soon). Then, we will have a better picture of how much GPU budget we have to include PTGI and if we can make changes to it to fit that budget," said Perneky

"One difficulty in answering your question is that there are so many strategies for doing ray tracing or path tracing. Just to give an example, the engine that drives Alan Wake 2 is very, very different from the engine that drives Cyberpunk 2077. I really hesitate to say that PlayStation 5 Pro can or can't do path tracing, but you need to have a highly optimized strategy for doing it if you're going to do it on PS5 Pro,"

1440p. 2080ti is probably very close in RT power to PS5 Pro (console might be more powerful in hybrid RT games but I doubt that's the case in PT):

The 60 fps, at 4k with RT is already a big achievement for ps5 pro. But maybe its possible that the next evolution of pssr on ps5 pro is path tracing. Its not a necessity and its negligible but, if ps5 pro pssr peform path tracing at even just on 30 fps, that is already an achievement considering how expensive and demanding path tracing is.

Its actualy 1080p upscaled pssr to 4k I belive .should be achievable at 30fps and lower graphics

5090 is 3x more powerful than Pro in standard raster, but much more than that in path tracing calculation. RDNA4 was much improved for hybrid RT but it still sucks for PT.

9070XT is normally on par with 5070ti. With PT it's over 3x weaker:

Don't do this to yourself. You are setting yourself up for disappointment and tears. 😂
A PS5 Pro is no 4000€ High End gaming pc and even these machines struggle with path tracing.

Infer from it what a console with a (negative) -1000%+ Ray Tracing performance deficit (300 Vs. 3300 TOPs), and no DLSS Ray Reconstruction, would have to run at. Remember PSSR on its own uses a large majority of the Pro's ML hardware, so even if it could run path tracing at say 480p/25FPS or something, it couldn't simultaneously run PSSR 2.0 on top of it, and same goes for frame generation.

It's possible, if you want low to medium on all graphics settings, and all features like hair strand except for pathtracing turned off, and you're ok with it not consistently holding 30fps, people, just be happy with the game looking good and running well on your PS5pro if you're not going to getting a PC, it's literally one feature that's not supported and the devs thought there was a good reason not to.

Update: Just tested it on my pre-built 3080TI rig, to do Max Settings, Path Tracing ON, I had to go all the way down to 1080p DLSS Quality and the opening city section was still just 26-34 fps, not worth it, just let it go.

I honestly don't believe it's possible at all without massively dropping object detail, transparencies and density. Not everything is tied to just resolution, such as the BVH that needs to be in place for it. Without Opacity MicroMaps, without a production grade ML based denoiser that works well with sparsely sampled PT, without SER, on a system already VRAM bandwidth starved? PT on Pro is a near impossible dream for a game like this. There's a reason AMD cards are currently struggling with PT to the extent that many devs (including Capcom) don't even bother building it for them. RDNA 5 should finally fix that. So until PS6, we all just have to wait.

I've had problems with RT high with FG, certain textures, mainly the ones that should behave like Metals, look like black or black on transparent shit. Mainly outside Raccoon. Everything else seemed absolutely fine.
 
Sure, cut the FPS and drop the resolution. Bit of a problem, the inbuilt RE denoiser is truly dog shit. So PT upscaled from 720p? The noise will be horrendous. It would need to leverage something like ray regeneration from AMD.

When I turn on PT, I can't turn on FG. This sucks because a game, that seems like it demands more, CP2077... can function under both.
Not a big deal, but I see FPS cut down. Any cutdown is bad to me. Period.

Yet ps5 pro runs regular raytracing st 60fps as the 5090 so its simialr

It might but at what cost? I care faaaaaar more about game running smoothy than PT because at end of the day its video game and I want it plays well more than being "high tech".

With some optimization it could be possible. The reason Capcom did not try is because its probably too much work for a mode at 30fps

Man just take a play from Nvidia and have some dedicated cores for RT already!
 
Maybe 480p 30fps, path tracing is using more rays and bounces. But PT generate more noise, so you need also a pretty good denoiser so more computation too

I don't think using a 5090 benchmark and deriving PS5 Pro results from it is gonna be anywhere close to accurate.

however, its not 4k on PS5 pro. not even 2k . and that 60 fps isnt stable either.

if a 5090 with PT is 30 fps on 4k native. How the hell a console that is 5x weaker will handle it?


Let me just say this. even the PS6 wont do PT unless its like full hd 30 fps upscaled with FSR4 to 4k or something.

Of all companies, do you want AMD to have proper path tracing? They are already 2 gen behind with the 9070xt when it comes to PT. So no. Don't have hopes even.
 
To be honest path tracing is not a necessity and its negligible. Even RT, but still thankful ps5 pro can do some RT even base ps5. If ps5 pro can do it then fine its a bonus, if not its still okay.
 
Nice of them to admit that it's technically possible for AMD hardware to run path tracing and so locking it out for AMD users is purely artificial move (cough Nvidia moneyhats cough).

No, like I said many times 60 FPS is better experience but at the same time I'm not stupid enough to skip good game just because runs at 30FPS…so given the choice I will always choose better performance over better graphics but I will never ever skip good over 30 FPS.
