Could this be a "breakout" Holiday season for the Wii-U?

Out of that list I wouldn't dismiss Wii U sports either, indeed all local multiplayer games may sell decently throughout holydays season.

Anyway iIf mass market gets to realise - advertising, word of mouth - that 3d world is the first 3d multiplayer Mario platform and not just a single-player experience -, then it may have possibly - and hopefully - a bigger impact on sales than NSMBU and become Wii U's killer application.

Bold prediction: Wii U moves more hardware worldwide this Holiday than Xbone and PS4. Major turnaround? Not necessarily, but it'll do well enough to earn some more respect on here and kill the "it's a dead system" stigma.

Disagree, disagree that much that I'd bet money on it. It's not only lacking specific games, the WiiU platform as a whole is not a desireable as the Wii was. Motion Controls were hot and interesting, using a Pad as a Controller is not.

I think the next gen launches are being a bit overdone in terms of impact on Wii U. Supply is going to be incredibly limited and Nintendo still has a large chunk of loyalists who are not on board yet and will not be impacted all that much by PS4/XBONE

It will almost certainly do better than the rest of the year, but "break out" strikes me as extremely unlikely, assuming our operational definition of "break out" is that it's sales change in significant, meaningful ways that change the shape of the generation for the system.

In these cases our best evidence is historical precedence, and there isn't much favorable precedence for the Wii U in that regard. Any system that has bombed this hard for well over a year has continued to bomb going forward. Even moving the needle from "huge bomb" to "bomb" is unlikely, but if that counts as "break out" for you, then I guess it's possible.

Well, I want one now, for the first time since it launched. I'm sure that true of a lot of gamers with WW HD and the new Mario actually looking quite good in recent trailers.

Problem is, I want the other two consoles more.

Clearly the system can easily be $250 without a game since the WWHD bundle is $300 and comes with both the game and Hyrule Historia (both digitally).

They could even notch it down to $230 even considering the book, does the WWHD bundle include anything else that can be ditched?

They forget Yamauchi's words of the console's price being vital since if it's not in people's hands, they can't buy the games.

Why do they insist on bundles?

Those bundle are pretty great in my opinion, I can't see why sales shouldn't improve.
However, a break out success is not very likely is my guess.

Edit:

Seriously for 100 dollars extra you could get a PS4 at Christmas, why would any one pick the Wii u?

Why should someone spend 100 Dollars more when he can get equally or maybe more fun out of playing games on the cheaper console?

Some people still think Nintendo is competing with MS and Sony. Nintendo is competing with Apple, which is actually harder. The kids have iPad and iPhone on top of their wishlists, not Mario or Zelda.

I have a hard time believing they suddenly put Mario on top of that list.

The Wii U is not competing with Apple.

You've assumed I said it would do Wii numbers. It won't. It has the best lineup going into the Holidays, though, and won't be hindered by shortages or launch issues.

Also, remember, November and December are historically Nintendo's best months sales-wise.

I really don't think Nintendo will start showing signs of succeeding until E3 2014 as most people will either be spending their money on the current gen or getting a PS4 (or Xbone).

I think it will be respectable, but it won't do gangbusters like some people think it will. Super Mario 3D World will be a big seller though.

How many of them 100m Wii owners also enjoy playstayion?
Probably more than you think. I like my PS3 and plan to own a PS4 at some point (and I owned a Wii and own a Wii U).

The price is still too high and the frequency of new releases is too sporadic to maintain any momentum.

Once Mario 3D World is out it'll get a decent spike but it'll crater again in the new year as people wait for the next big game.

I don't think this part is true anymore. Starting with Pikmin 3 (July) there has been at least one exclusive release a month. The problem isn't so much no games, it's Nintendo refuses to give them any sort of marketing. 3D World really needs to be their big push this holiday. The PS4 and Xbone launch line ups are pretty dire, and as far as exclusives with selling power go, Mario shits all over anything the competition is offering.

I agree about next year though. Mario Kart and DK will help but what else are they planning?

I think it's going to get brutally savaged this holiday season, especially with it's price point.

This. Its going to be brutal. Nintendo has no way to compete with the double whammy marketing juggernauts that are the ps4 and xbone launches.

Even if MS wasn't spending their well publicized billion dollars to market their new machine, the mainstream and gaming press will give them at least that much coverage anyway. Wii U is old news. No one will give a shred of attention to the upcoming games for it. Not one.

If wiiu can survive this holiday things will look better in 2014, but this is going to be their worst holiday season of all time.

I'd put it at the empty shelves to cause a stir. True most people will want the 2 big guns coming out, but with all the rumored shortages or stock post launch. Also will parents "settle" for the WiiU to give their kids as an upgrade to their Wii? Getting these causuals to buy a Wii-U could be key for their success, but that also means they would have to market their product this fall succesfully..

Not sure parents will backfill the void under the tree with a WII U. If you can't find a PS4 or XBONE for jr., chances are you'll move on to a new iPad, iPhone, laptop, or maybe 3DS/Vita.

Nintendo probably needed Mario Kart out this Christmas to really get mainstream attention.

Mario Kart picked up where Wii Sports left off, becoming seemingly Nintendo's biggest cross-demographic appeal franchise. A Wii U christmas bundle with Mario Kart 8 would show potential to get more attention from those who haven't kept track of what Nintendo's been doing the last 3 years.

A bundle with Mario 3D World and WWHD would be pretty killer.

Maybe Nintendo should think about taking the (3D Mario) loss on software to put more consoles in homes.

I don't think so. Europe is going to be all about that PS4. US will be all about that PS4 and some XB1.

WiiU had the lone spotlight last year. They had two years prep time to make it an amazing launch, they let the Wii die a real abrupt, harsh death to focus on the WiiU and they blew their opportunity. Now it's just going to be that much harder.

None of that looks even remotely interesting to me. Call me when the console gets some Japanese RPGs though. And I don't mean X, I mean games with storylines.

For 100 dollars less you can get an iPad mini, why would anyone get a PS4?

They already have an ipod or iPhone or iPad mini, why would they want a Wii u? Kids will want the PS4 to play the games all their friends are playing like minecraft, halo, Call of duty or fifa

I don't see it happening. I don't know many people talking about the Wii U. Almost everyone is talking about the new systems- PS4 and Xbox One. I think it may see a sales spike, but nothing too amazing.

I don't think many people would want to settle with a Wii U as a consolation prize when they aren't able to get a PS4 or Xbox One.

The Wii U is going to get slaughtered this holiday. I think the PS4 will probably have the Wii U outsold by the end of March

This is only true if you are really into any type of game. The list of genres the Wii U gets regular releases in is way too narrow for my tastes. While I see the appeal in W101 I'm not sure if it appeals to me, and I don't see myself buying it. Same for Zelda. I liked the original and might buy the remake when it hits budget, but I don't see myself splurging for the minimal changes they've made to the story and gameplay.

I wish we could find an attachment rate for this. If I remember, it was a pretty high rate. For most of this gen, I've had 2 Wii's and 2 PS3's, then we got a 360, so...

Although, I've gamed mostly on PS3, and plan on getting a PS4 in the spring when I actually get some extra money, I've always kept my eye on the Wii-U in case it interests my kids at some point..

This is how I feel about this topic too, pretty sure wii u will do great this holiday season.

What are you counting for the holidays? I don't think it can beat the Ps4 in actual sales this holiday. Maybe it can beat Xone.

I think once PS4 and Xbox One are out and filling store shelves, the Wii U will get pushed into a corner (literally) and it probably won't be able to get back out. I honestly don't think the market wants an expensive last gen spec'd TV console that plays Nintendo games.

My opinion? This will be it's last Xmas, but I am probably wrong.

This is what happened at my local bestbuy. When you walk in its Ps4 and Playstation products then Xone and xbox products. I had actually thought they got rid of the nintendo section but they stuffed the Wii WiiU DS and 3DS all on one shelf. Their is actually more shelf space dedicated to Skylanders than to all of Nintendo. Crazy enough they actually expanded their PC game section.
