Could xDefiant find success with classic Call of Duty game design? We should know later this week.

Reading classic cod I imagined something different
Call_of_Duty_2_Box.jpg

It plays nothing like classic CoD. It’s more like new CoD and a dash of Overwatch. I thought it was rubbish.

It really depends what you mean by classic? It plays pretty similar to blackops 2 and 4. Which are a lot of peoples favourites.

I personally found it really refreshing. I've not been able to enjoy what I define as "the cod experience" for years. This game felt clean, very little bullshit, good kill times, well designed maps. Very promising so far.

I bought nu-MW2 and it's just awful, it is a chore to play, the interface is horrible, the SBMM is overbearing, visual design is garbage, thin amount of content, it's a massive piece of shit game and a real disappointment considering the developer, the fact that it is MW, etc. Plus of course they're gonna ditch it in a few months like they always do. I don't know if this game is it but MW2 feels like such a massive misstep and I wonder if it turned off more people than just me.

I just updated the OP to include this info. A new open beta is only a week away.

The next beta will be June 21-23, and it will be an open beta available to all. People who played the game during the closed beta will be able to start playing a day earlier on June 20th. The full game will be free to play, and will be released later this summer.

Aside from that, the developers have announced a roadmap for the game's first year. Every three months there will be three new maps, a new character class, and maybe a new game type now and then.

The COD community has been genuinely hyped for this game, and most COD you tubers have had some fairly positive things to say about it. It delivers classic COD multiplayer design in a way that the series hasn't managed to replicate in a long time, and it's arriving at a time when a lot of COD fans are fed up with Activision for a wide assortment of reasons.

Here's a basic overview on some of the recent announcements:

Classic implies first to third in a series or compendium, not seven titles in classic. This looks nothing like classic CoD and more like "hey we know you want more Blops 2 but we included none of that!"

Given how COD has gone alphabet levels of crazy this seems like it might be a good substitute.

This video featured a very nice overview of recent announcements. To recap:

  • There will be a classic prestige system added to the game after launch.
  • In addition to cross-play, XDefiant will also have cross-progression.
  • Input based match making will be in the game, but it won't be in the open beta.
  • There will be support for 120hz on console, even in the open beta.
  • eSports support will come sometime after launch, so it doesn't seem to be a priority.

It actually looks solid with great gameplay and fluidity. Success? Depends on marketing, they need to market the hell out of it.

Calling major BS on that one. So many games have promised “input based match making” and, to my knowledge, not a single game has actually gone through with it.

They are picking a good time for launch near the end of the COD year and Activision is creating a lot of confusion as to what next year is looking like.

I don’t think anything is in Activision’s bag of tricks to get people hyped like MW2 did so if Xdefiant is going to do anything this is their moment.

That said I am pretty doubtful this will do much but I would be happy to be wrong. Ubisoft generally has not done well with Gaas with the exception of Siege which I think survives sometimes in spite of Ubisoft’s efforts.

I believe Apex does this. If you are on PlayStation and playing with friends who are on PlayStation or Xbox, you will never be matched with a PC user. If you're on PC and playing with friends on PC, you'll never be matched with console users.

What games have promised that and not done it?

As long as the gunplay is way worse than CoD, why would you play this?

True, but who is saying it's "way worse"? Most of the you tube community is pretty supportive of the game so far, and they've had a lot of good things to say. I played the last few betas of COD games, and I thought this was better than any of them.

Honestly miss the classic cod map designs, hated cod since mw3 for changing the design to be more arena shooter where every part of the map is mirrored, its just fucking shit

Call of Duty is probably the most outrageous example. Call of Duty: MW was supposed to have input based matchmaking and then the game came out and woops: No input based matchmaking. At all.

Apex Legends doesn't have input based matchmaking either: It's full on cross play regardless of input.

Halo technically does have input based matchmaking, but it is only for very select ranked modes, and you need to go out of your way to enable it.

Cod is getting pressure from battlefield and that’s a good thing. They need to recalibrate the franchise, a decade ago cod4 felt more thoughtful.

Everything, apart from its awful name, looks great. I'm hyped.

120hz on consoles this early is BIG

I'm still waiting for 120hz in apex.....which is wild

I’m hoping once “arena shooters” die, which appears super close with OW2 and now this, battle royale will die shortly after. Then, in theory GAAS should die at some point in the next half decade after….then, and maybe then, we will get a decent Battlefield game. Not holding my breath…competitive multiplayer shooters are beyond repair at this point.

I was able to play this earlier today, seeing as I was in the closed beta. The improvements help a lot.

One interesting note is that the game isn't going to look as good as the closed beta, but it's only due to testing.

What about extraction shooters? That’s where we are all headed towards now.

Never really messed with them at all, so I can’t really comment on them…but hopefully we go back to some sort of standard 16v16 and 32v32 good old fashioned competitive multiplayer where the devs focus on that instead of BR, GAAS, and other less than stellar game modes. Not holding my breath though. I truly believe there is room for both, but it seems it’s more about the money and less about love for development and gaming. I understand money is important to companies, but the lack of passion and creativity will end up destroying the game industry in the future. Console and PC gaming is soy turning into mobile gaming.

This is a true cod-killer candidate. Due to its emphasis on the 6 vs 6 multiplayer modes that make Call of Duty great(instead of BR bs), this game has a slight edge over COD for me.

They have copied everything from COD so well that I couldn't help but wonder if Activision would win a lawsuit against them. Instead of paying $60-70 every year for the same monetization and gameplay, I would rather play it for free. Having Ubisoft behind it is very valuable as they have kept Rainbow Six alive for years and haven't alienated its player base that much. While I don't think they have been successful enough in other genres, looking at Rainbow Six as an example, I believe they excel in the online FPS genre.

It seems like the devs of 'The Finals' have missed a great opportunity.

The only shortcoming I see for now is that the time-to-kill could be a bit faster. I hope there will be a hardcore mode.

I should also mention that I tend to speak early and be proven wrong lol.

Well I eventually managed to get into one match and have to say not really that impressed. It seems like they are trying to emulate Cod movement and gunplay from the original MW days but then throwing in overwatch style match types and skills. It didn't really work Imo. The one match I played was escorting a robot in phases to an eventual destination. Just like overwatch. It felt very mid to play overall. People forget that COD already tried this game type with "War" in WWII. I enjoyed it but then it never appeared in another COD again. (I'm guessing the player numbers weren't high). I am presuming the game will have the meat and potatoes modes? TDM, CTF, DOM etc?

Overall the game is fine but I don't feel any great urge to jump back in and play. The servers just wouldn't connect if I wanted to anyway. Tbh I cant see this getting anywhere near COD. I think trying to implement the skills etc hasn't really paid off. It feels like its borrowing too much from other games, rather than carving its own path.
