Counter-Strike: Source, new beta now available

All they have to do is add an achievement.

Trailblazer: Play a map other than de_dust2

You were saying? :lol

I feel for you peoples who have had bad experiences with CS. Been playing both Source and 1.6 since HL2 came out, and by far and away the factor most directly correlated to a positive experience is what kind of server you go to. That is,

1. Are the people there douchebags?

and

2. Do they have a good map rotation? Mixed bag of official and custom.

And of course Gun Game, Surf, Zombie, e.t.c. are still all alive and well.

Shit if this comes out for Mac I will be addicted all over when it comes to gun game and well that one Halo map. That thing sucks me in.

Pssh, like any of the CS elite could bring themselves to do THAT.

I'm talking realistic goals here, people.

There's also achievements for rescuing the hostages. Does Valve even play this game?

Holy shit I thought this was a joke and I checked my achievements page and it is real. :lol :lol :lol

Edit: Some of these achievements are nuts.

Winning 100 rounds on Dust 2 is, like, a free Wednesday afternoon for some die-hard people. Valve should try to think of some new incentive to try out new maps. Points, achievements, whatever it takes.... Settled players are always going to play safe, because that's what they know..

best thing to happen to cs was beta 7.

death animations, more guns, drivable vehicles, VIP missions ... omg the memories.

My favorite part of Beta 7: Getting everyone into the APC on Siege and driving it off the cliff to start the round.

So simple, yet funny everytime.

There are plenty of servers with good map rotations available for the beta, it's just that they are always empty. Sounds like a perfect opportunity for Gaf to use one as a personal server. I don't play much anymore but I would love to see how I stack up against the best that Gaf has to offer.

No kidding. My "holy shit" was to the fact that people need to play 1,800 winning rounds to get the achievements for the maps. That is alot of winning rounds.

:lol 4-10 on my first d2 match in years. That's pretty good right? ;) Managed to snag 3 achievements anyway. Still good fun but damn, Demon's Souls & pretty much any other difficult game got nothing on this community :(

If any gaffers are playing in the beta and want to get together on a server my steam name is Buster Hymen. You can find me in the steams gaf group.

Can we get some screenshots of the gameplay up in here? I wanna how the new-ish engine tweaks stack up.
Looks the same.

They went very liberal with the motion-blur as well. You can barely tell.

Still the same CS we know and love.

There isnt much to show. Slightly better lighting and shadows and maybe some slight tweaks to the character models. Motion blur now but you really only notice if you turn fast or when a planted bomb goes off. You probably wouldnt be able to notice the changes if someone didn't tell you about them. Gameplay has been tweaked faster to feel a little more like old CS. Outside of stats, achievements and game speed there isn't much different. Engine does run much better now though.

Some people claim hitboxes are fixed now. I never had a problem with hitboxes myself. Went from 1.5 to 1.6 to Source and there was nothing wrong with the hitboxes. Problem was servers claiming to be 100 tic when they were really 66 tic. Nothing wrong with 66 tic as long as the server says it and you set your rates around that. Also too many servers with 24+ players in them when the server could only handle 16-18. Most CS maps are terribly broken when you play with more than 18 players or so anyway. People not knowing how to run a server caused a lot of the hitbox myth.

The way bullets are landing is completely different. Nades float differently, there's some weird rubber band death stuff. By rubber band I mean when I get killed, it moves me back slightly to where the shot occurred (I'm guessing), and then I get "dropped" with momentum if applicable. It's pretty jarring.

Invisible people running around, invisible players in spec. Some jittering.

However, vsync is much better on this build. Doesn't introduce a lot of mouse lag like current CSS does.

They still have quite a ways to go. It is beta after all, but I do hope the final product does have that Valve polish.

Didn't see another counterstrike or valve thread in the past 10 pages, so I'm not sure if anyone noticed this tidbit.

In the G4TV Portal interview with Doug Lombardi from Valve, at the very very end, he mentions offhand that CS:S is coming to the Mac not this week, but next week. Which means, the beta should go live at that point for PC.

Woah missed this.

Hidden Path? Like, Defense Gird's Hippen Path? Very cool.

Yes, same developer.

I would not be surprised if they continue with CSS development after the beta ends. Probably to port the remaining modes and maps from 1.6 to CSS then make new maps and rebalance stuff.

Awesome. Hidden Path won me over already.

Looks like I missed this beta though. That's a shame. I need to pay more attention to GAF.

Oh this is some nice unexpected news. :)
I skipped the beta, it was just too buggy for me, but I'm defenitly looking forward to playing some rounds now. :)

Are you sure it's the same one? Steam seems to have two usernames, one for your profile and one for your "nickname".

That Abe Froeman was his nickname, not his profile name. :P
I don't know if it's the guy I'm thinking of but he uses that nick on another forum. Just caught my eye. Maybe I'll show him the pic.

Ok so I tried to get back into playing some CS. I used to play pretty hardcore back in the day.

Its so fucking impossible to find a server.

They are either

1) some stupid custom map
2) dust2
3) deathmatch
4) some stupid custom mode

does anyone have some ip's of servers that are like 24-30 players/ usually full/ and not one of the things mentioned above.

Just to clarify, are you talking about CSS or CS 1.6?

Sorry my bad, Source.

If anyone just has a server they play at, whether its their clans or whatever, just as long as its good old fashioned counter strike with default maps.

Gametracker and just filter out. You can use the in game server filter and most servers are obvious what maps or modes they are playing. Most modes are listed or abbreviated now tagged as well. Not hard to find what you want unless it's not popular in which case you should buy or host your own server.

Dust2 is popular because pub types do not like league or competitive levels due to sucking at them. Pub play with vets get lopsided when you get high level players who can take out 2-5 players with little effort.

Pug it up if you want regular play with more normal settings just watch out for the various forms of cheats that roam those circles.

Yeah I tried filtering, but then i end up with custom maps/deathmatch. Back in the day every server was good old fashioned counter strike. Guess ill just manually test a bunch until i find 1 or 2 to keep in my favorites
