This is not like the Rodney King verdict. I hope something worthwhile comes of this case, like a harder look into software patents.

I only have so many... Handles

I've not been following this stuff because quite honestly patent lawsuits are very boring

But this verdict is going to decide some 700 decisions between apple/samsung? How did this even unfold in this way?

I can't believe Apple and Samsung didn't settle.

Keep in mind that the jury verdict is all-important. Appeals courts don't generally run around turning those over.

Apple and Samsung would appeal legal interpretation, patentability, things like that. Not a finding of fact like infringement.

To be clear: there will be appeals, but this verdict is a HUGE deal.

Be ready for an intense fog of confusion here — they have to read all 700+ answers, and Apple and Samsung will both win some.

Nilay explained on the latest Verge podcast why Apple would allow this to happen, so I don't know why he is surprised. It's about making a statement at this point. Obviously makes more business sense to settle but if Apple wins this, it solidifies them and all they've been saying/doing.

Samsung wins: All bets off for FRAND.

Definitely not. The US government has made it clear that they're going to step in and stop any kind of FRAND abuse like what Motorola and Samsung have tried.

The outcome if Samsung wins is that trade dress issues are not taken as seriously. Copying the look and feel of other companies products becomes a little bit safer for everyone. Bad news for entrepreneurs and innovators.

If Apple wins then it swings in the other direction and trade dress issues are taken more seriously and companies have to be more careful that their products don't look and feel like their competitors. Some of the things Apple has claimed are ridiculous, but many were legitimate claims against Samsung Galaxy.

Not really. If Samsung wins we don't really lose anything. If Apple wins, everyone loses options when they want to buy a phone.

No, if Samsung wins, then FRAND patents now become fair game for litigation... not to say they weren't in the first place, but there will be an onus for every company to pay into them or face massive lawsuits.

I seriously doubt the US government will try anything vis a vis FRAND. They can say they will, but my instincts say no.

This went by too fast. Regardless of verdict, I feel like they just went Fuck this. For such a technical case, shouldn't there be a lot of confusion?

I haven't been following this. Why is this a big deal?

I don't own a smartphone, btw, so please keep it in simple terms.
