For the gossip queens:

NEW YORK - Tom Cruise says girlfriend Katie Holmes "digs" the Church of Scientology. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cruise says the 26-year-old "Batman Begins" actress is curious about Scientology, founded by L. Ron Hubbard.

"Yes, absolutely. She digs it," the 42-year-old actor tells the magazine.

When asked if he's become more passionate about Scientology, Cruise says: "I've always been passionate about it. I've always talked about it when people asked about it."

He also confirmed there was a Scientology massage tent on the set of his upcoming film, "War of the Worlds."

"I also had a cappuccino tent on that set. And I made sure the crews were fed well, too. And if someone wanted an assist from a (Scientology) volunteer, it was there for them," he says. "People are curious about it — they're always asking me about it, they want to know what Scientology is."

In an EW.com poll, 61 percent of respondents said they liked Cruise less now after the recent exhaustive attention to his personal life, 3 percent said they liked him more, and 36 percent said their viewpoint of the "Top Gun" star hadn't changed.

When asked by the interviewer if he's going to propose to Holmes, Cruise whispered, "It's gonna happen, man. It'll happen."

Short version: L. Ron Hubbard invented (read: freely made up) the science of Dianetics, in order to help folks unlock their full human potential...for a price. This sparked Scientology, a religion Hubbard discovered (read: freely made up) that allowed folks to discover their amazing superpowers...for a much higher price. Cue cult activities and brutally milking folks of their cash. You can learn the gorey details by reading through xenu.net, the Hubbard biography Barefaced Messiah (available to read for free online), or the expose A Piece of Blue Sky: Scientology, Dianetcs, and L. Ron Hubbard exposed by Jon Atack. It all makes for fascinating, if somewhat disturbing, reading.

Basically, you want to stay the hell away from Scientology.

They believe an alien named xenu caused a nuclear explosion several billion years ago to solve the overpopulation problem in the universe. The problem was, people souls (referred to as "body thetans") still were able to be blown around by the nuclear winds. Xenu then captured the thetans and placed them into cinemas where they watched movies on how they are supposed to live life and the concept of God, Satan, and Christ. After the movies were over the thetans flew around and inhabited people and still do to this day. The only way to become a free spirit is to rid yourself of these evil body thetans. This is Scientology's goal.

No, I did not make any of that up.

Scientology is the gateway to eternity. It is the path to happiness and total spiritual freedom. Until one has experienced the technology of Scientology it's unlikely that one will ever experience these wonderful discoveries. I know because it has worked for me. The more time and effort I invest, the more I receive. I am with this religion.

When I was growing up, I used to hang out with a kid; let's call him John Doe. Anyways, John Doe and I saw a lot of each other because our fathers were friends from their days spent at university out East. Eventually, as our age difference became more apparent, we began to see a lot less of each other at our parent's get togethers. The last time that I saw John Doe, we were both running around on his father's 280 acre estate.

Fast forward over a decade and John Doe's father has long since passed away. The assets that the father originally secured and left in trust for John Doe in the hopes of preserving his lifetime of savings and accomplishment for all posterity have been entirely evaporated. John Doe, at the moment of his coming of age as stipulated by the trust, depleted all of these assets in the course of only three years, much to the benefit of the Church of Scientology.

The whole subject is pretty taboo because it really upsets my dad to have it mentioned/discussed, but apparently John Doe developed depression in college after his father's death and the Church of Scientology took advantage of his vulnerability at this time. John Doe was told that impurities in his soul/force were the cause of his depression and anxiety and that to cleanse his body of these impurities, that he would need to use some phony machine designed in the 1950's and sit in a room for several hours watching a gauge/dial. These treatments came at several hundred dollars a pop and were recommended at greater frequency and at longer session. Eventually, John Doe was selling and signing over assets right and left to come up with the money needed for continued and further "treatment" by the church.

Scientology isn't a religion... more like a cult.

Fuckin scientologists.

Alright, who would win in a three way battle based entirely on insanity:

Scientologists
Yellow Bamboo practitioners
Snake Handler "religion" believers

Yeah, it is weakness -- weakness of mind.

Then again, that's just the psychology of how this "cult" works. They target college/university students the most, peddling Hubbard's books to them while fervantly searching for perceived vulnerabilities or feelings of inadequacy to exploit. There's really no lower lifeform on this Earth by comparison...

Some people are just simple minded. Which doesn't exclude atheists. But Scientology...aren't you even warned in schools about that in the USA ?

Well, to be fair, God, Jesus, Buddha, Allah, etc. are all completely free of charge.

And a big WTF @ Waychel's story. Scary stuff.

Waychel just showed how Scientology is a load of bull. Honestly - if you are that much of a believer in science, just be an athiest/agnostic. I hear that Beck is a member of this worthless "religion" as well.

Here's a list of Scientology celebs:

http://www.scientology-kills.org/celebrities/celebrities.htm

Also...

Neopets a "threat to world freedom"?

Dohring and his crew invented this "immersive advertising" thing, which they are attempting to register as a trademark, that is nothing more than subliminal advertising (notice that on neopets.com the most common advertisement location is in the blind spot of the left eye). I've read interviews where children had no idea that there was any advertising at all on neopets, and then started quoting the advertising to which they were exposed! They're using neopets to get the children of the world.

Giovanni Ribisi is a scientologist? Absolutely ZERO surprise there.

Kristie Allie is one? You KNOW Travolta recruited her. Look who's talking, biotch! I wonder if Jenny Craig and the Church of Scientology have a turf war going on over her.

Oh well, GAFs loss. Me and Jenna Elfman WERE gonna let you all hang out with us one day and cleanse your thetans and make you happy, BUT YOU LOST IT! NO THETANS! NO DAMACY! NO NOTHIN!

WHAT IS WITH ALL THE HATE? This is OA-grade shit. I don't care if it's Islam or Hinduism or what, this kind of trolling would be unacceptable in any circle of society. I will never, as long as I live, understand why a boutique version of Buddhism manages to raise so much ire.

Someone have that "WHAT?" picture of the dog in the meat grinder? That'd fit perfect here.

If Scientology is a boutique form of Buddhism, then I'm a boutique version of Brad Pitt. And I assure you, I'm not.

The head of the Galactic
Confederation (76 planets around
larger stars visible from here)
(founded 95,000,000 yrs ago, very space opera)
solved overpopulation (250 billion
or so per planet) -- 178 billion
average) by mass implanting.
He caused people to be brought to
Teegeeack (Earth) and put an H Bomb
on the principal volcanoes (Incident 2)
and then the Pacific area ones
were taken in boxes to Hawaii
and the Atlantic Area ones to
Las Palmas and there "packaged."
His name was Xenu. He used
renegades. Various misleading
data by means of circuits etc.
were placed in the implants.
When through with his crime Loyal Officers
(to the people) captured him
after 6 years of battle
and put him in an electronic
mountain trap where he still
is. "They" are gone. The place (Confed.)
has since been a desert.
Yeah, L. Ron = Buddha.

I said ideology. That has nothing to do with ideology.
But... The Buddha's teachings about self-improvement and meditation are anti-materialistic. Which is the exact opposite of Scientology. What similarities are you seeing? The reincarnation bit?

I'm suprised that Nancy Cartright (plays Bart in the Simpsons) is in Scientology since that "Unitarians" episode was so obviously making fun of scientology. The crazy stories, the high pressure mind control tactics, taking all your money, the shady leader, etc

Reincarnation is one similarity, yes. There's also the concept that you can only hate someone you have committed some overt act against, which is something like karma. And the idea that the spirit is in every way superior to, and dominant over, the body is also very Eastern.

You're right, though, that Scientology has a distinctly materialistic focus where Buddhism takes the opposite approach. This is also reflected in the high prices of books and services - the justification the Church uses is that as you improve as a spiritual being, you'll be able to achieve greater success more easily, so you'll be able to afford the rapidly escalating prices. That's why I'm not exactly defending Scientology. But I'll defend individuals who have the money and choose to pursue it. It's their choice.

Sonarrat, so you think it's okay for some dude to INVENT a religion that extorts money from people as long as their teachings bear a resemblance to an eastern religion?

Would you defend individuals who partake in other made up religions that cause physical harm to themselves and others? (i.e. cults)

I'm sorry, but I think you've become a sucker to whoever's been brainwashing you.

PUTTING ASIDE THEIR BUSINESS PRACTICES, WHICH HAVE BEEN LABELLED AS ORGANIZED CRIME IN SEVERAL COUNTRIES, AND HAVE DESTROYED PEOPLE'S LIVES, AS WELL AS HAVE LED TO SUICIDE...

... Scientology is quite cool!

Well, they obviously didn't brainwash me well enough, because I'm not a Scientologist.

I don't believe Scientology is as bad as it seems. I've read all the same things you have, and I just don't see why I have any reason to believe these people. So I just prefer to stay neutral. Leave it alone, and if it's going to fall, it will, whether you bash it or not. It's a commercial venture and it will survive only according to the rules of a commercial venture. I'm jaded enough to know that's how the world works nowadays, and it's unfortunate, but you just have to keep on your toes...

Perhaps you should believe various law enforcement agencies. As well as the judicial courts. God, you're pretty weak minded. You'd be a perfect Scientologist!
