Culdcept appreciation thread?

stuck my tongue deep inside Atlus' cookies
I love Culdcept so SO much. I'm really sad that it didn't become a sleeper sensation along the lines of Disgaea, last fall. I didn't exactly expect it to sell like hotcakes, but I at least hoped the hardcore gaming community would embrace it and spread awareness, so we could see more Culdcept goodness here in America. But nooooo. :(:(

Anyway, tell me SOMEONE here has the game or likes the game. At least one of you? The game is sheer genius. If you like tactics/strategy games, or any kind of collecting games, for the love of God make an impulse purchase and pick up Culdcept. Amazon still has new copies. You'll be glad you did.

I love that game!
I just wish I could find more people to play against...

I wish the game had an online mode, that would have owned.

MY girlfriend is a gamer (not a 'fake' girl gamer either. She beats my ass at bomberman), and I tried to get her into Culdcept. She didn't like it, though. I've never played against anyone else... just the AI.

If you have hardcore gaming friends, like the type that'd play FF:CC with you, the odds are really good they'll get hooked on culcept if you have them check it out. They can use your deck in a multiplayer match, to ensure that they aren't at a horrible disadvantage...

I grabbed Culdcept a couple of months back, but I've yet to do more than read the manual and watch the intro once. ^^; I keep meaning to play it... Hopefully I'll be able to make some time for it soon.

For those of you considering buying the title:

Seriously, if you like slow-paced games, I can pretty much PROMISE you'll love Culdcept. We've all made impulse purchases, so what's one more?

Here's my review, if someone wants to know more about the game:

Quick review:
Culdcept is one part collectable card game and one part board game, mixed together into a package so good it's downright sexy. The basic concept has gamers traveling around boards of varying complexity, with access to a hand of cards, drawn from a deck they put together. The object is to be the first player to reach the set amount of total magic. Gamers can cast spells, use items, or place creatures of varying strength on empty squares (think houses or hotels in monopoly). As I'm sure you can imagine, things can get very complex at high levels of play.

Pros/Cons:
+ Hundreds and hundreds cards to collect, allowing you great freedom to build your particular deck
+ Lots of strategic depth, keeping you thinking and on your toes at all times
+ Single Player quest is extremely long and packs in reasons to come back (collecting all the cards, earning various medals, etc)
+ The gameplay eases you in, slowly revealing the more complex gameplay mechanics as you go along
+/- The quest is challenging to the point of being extremely frustrating at times, but I always wanted to come back for more
- Occasionally the translation is so rough that it detracts from the gameplay itself

Bottem Line:
Culdcept is the best game you've never heard of. It's also the first game I've been officially addicted to in over a year, and I play a lot of games, so that should tell you something. Anyone who is a fan of strategy titles, RPGs, board games, or collectable card games owes it to themselves to check out this title. This isn't a title for the casual gamer, however. Matches can get long, and it's very possible that making some bad preparatory choices with your deck could cost you the entire match. That being said, anyone who enjoys slower paced titles will enjoy Culdcept.

I love Culdcept. I pimp it here occasionally and to other gamers (to little effect). I bought it on release day and it lived up to my expectations and more. It's easily the best card based battle system to ever be on a console. I only wish it had the online mode like the JP release.

Also, I love the art. And making the announcer say the card names.

CULDCEPT LOVE!!!

That's a shame. You need to whip your girl into shape, man. As far as I'm concerned a lack of Culdcept luv is a sound reason for a thrashing.

I got myself a pretty big group of Culdcept buddies a few months ago, and it was the most fun I've had playing a multiplayer game in ages. They were mainly non-video gamey types, too. The crazy card art and goofy announcer reels 'em in. GIANT RAT!

Nowadays every EB I go to has stacks of the game for around $15, which breaks my heart. It was pretty obvious the game was never gonna be a big hit, but I think they coulda pimped it to the Disgaea crowd and done a few more sales. Everytime I see it sitting there for so cheap I'm overwhelmed with the (retarded) urge to buy another copy, cuz this game deserves love. My favorite non-shooter PS2 game by far.

Fine game. Very fine game. Nice music. Drove NEC Interchannel USA out of business, but.

Culdc3pt.

hahahahah. A little cross-thread joking fennekku, I haven't played the damn driving game.

You kids have convinced me on this one. I picked it up used this morning at EB for the paltry sum of 12.99. With the 10% discount card thing it was even less. I'm not a fan of card collecting games at all but I figured for that price I didn't have much to lose. Haven't even tried it yet but I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

Yaaaay! One convert down, 49,999 to go. Be sure to come back when it owns your soul, so maybe we can get a few more people from here.

The love... the Culcept love... it's so warm and fuzzy!

When the PS2 hits $99, this will be the first game I'm going to pick up (as well as Mr. Mosquito & that one where your roll around picking up trash).

Better yet, a nice XBox port with online action would be the shilznilz.

I couldn't get it upon release, and I recently saw a used copy at the local EB that I was going to pick up, but even though they said they had one in the computer, the idiot clerks couldn't find it anywhere. :|

no, it didn't. the japanese version just had some downloadable content, not online play. i think that NEC USA made that content available as unlockables in the US version instead, but i'm not sure.

IMO, this is one of the best games from last year. i played it obessively. i even got my friend interested, and we played a fair bit competitively, which was super fun. what a nice game; it's got some flaws .. mainly in the story and character artwork departments, and a bit with the translation .. but it's just overall fantastic.

hopefully if a sequel comes out in japan, another small publisher like atlus or mastiff might be interested in it due to the cult-hit status of it. with better marketing it might do better.. but really, we have no reason to worry about this until omiya soft makes a new edition. either way, it's wonderful that we got it at all, and we'll always have that...

I apologize in advance if bumping this old-ass thread pisses off a mod.

Culdcept seems to be $8 used if you can still find it in your local EB. I haven't seen it for more than $15 used anywhere else for the past couple of months. I've been steadily buying up copies and simply giving them away to friends to build interest. (Also did the same for Bombastic when Circuit City had it for $5.) I'll probably hand out 4 more copies before I'm done.

I think Culdcept should've made a nice selection of pre-made decks available from the start. It's easy to get people into the board game aspect of it, but it's asking too much of them to take the time to earn cards and build their own decks. :( Shit, maybe in a few months' time, I'll have decks set aside specifically for that purpose.

Some of the people who dig Phantom Dust should check this out. Yes, their very different, but I think my EXTREME love for them both comes from the same place. Culdcept is much more boardgame, and no online unfortunately, but you can go wild with the same sort of strategy.

fun game, it was just hard as hell to find, all the EBs only had like 2 or 3 copies and for some stupid reason they were always gutted

I own it, but it's never been in my PS2.

I read the manga, though... I'm kind of annoyed that it just stops at the end of #4.

Bought this so long ago and I've yet to play it even once. I kinda feel bad about it, always seemed like my kind of game.

I picked it up a few days after it came out here. I was addicted to it for a while. I convinced one of my friends to get it. I really enjoyed building new decks and refining them in order to get the perfect deck. I've been considering deleting my data and starting over. I wish I had a group of at least 3 other friends who were really into this game. This is one game that really needs online play. I still enjoy playing against the computer though.

Until I get some serious competition going on between my friends, I'm screwing around with gimmick decks. I'll let you guess what my deck named "1 point 5" is all about. Then, my "Spam & You" deck is all about purposely throwing away monsters to build attack strength for monsters that rely on the number of creatures killed or spaces taken. I've got a couple more ideas I'd like to play around with, too.

I'll join in with the Culdcept love. Great game and the only people I have played against were nowhere near my skill level. It is slow paced, but that's hardly a bad thing. I would go as far as to call it my favorite card-based console game. Sorry Baten Kaitos.

Interesting. I would have thought that there's no real basis for comparison.
