Curt Schilling asks Jake Tapper "as a Jew" why Jews are Democrats

“I don't need Chris Matthews to tell me why people of Jewish people vote the way they do,” he continued. “And I don't have a problem asking people questions like that, because I'm not trying to be offensive or racist.”

We should all be impressed by how effortless he finds it.

I'm Christian and no one has ever accused me of being racist when I tell them I am. People of all background belong to the Christian faith, so I am unsure how that generalization holds water at all.

Maybe just maybe if you have a persecution complex then you in fact are what you believe you are being persecuted for.

The basis of his confusion here seems kinda weird. Because it involves the notion that there is some sort of conflict between being Jewish - a cultural designation of either faith, ethnicity, or both - and voting 'against' Israel, a sovereign nation of which they are not necessarily citizens, and may never have been to. That's like being confused that Christians - not just Catholics, but Christians - might not be in line with the politics of the Vatican.

Seems like an honest enough question, if awkwardly worded and loaded with presumption.

People ask demographic questions of panelists all the time. We've seen discussions on this forum about women voters, African American voters, college voters, Hispanic voters, Mormon voters, white liberals, white evangelicals, Asians, and the elderly.

Most of the Jewish people I know in MA are socially liberal (like most of the state - Bernie nearly won the primary here), and even if they support Isreal they don't support the indefinite subjugation of Palestinians. Schilling is going to lose in a bloodbath for his Trump support alone, the commercials write themselves.

Schilling is seriously a fucking idiot and I have no idea why he's even entertaining a senate run in Massachusetts, especially against Warren who has some momentum. A moderate Republican could realistically challenge Warren and lose something like 56-44, a wide margin, but Schilling is not well liked in the state. He's made fun of on sports talk radio for being a blow hard and while people still remenisce about that 2004 Red Sox season, he's lost any good will that he may have gained by constantly running his mouth and getting himself in trouble. Outside of sports talk radio, which is perhaps his only audience, he's panned as being a joke and a celebrity blowhard on legitimate news radio. WBUR and WGBH, the NPR outlets, acknowledge his interest in running but don't treat him seriously.

On top of that, his brand of Republicanism is Trump's brand of Republicanism, in a state where the only successful Republican politicians are those who have steadily distanced themselves from Trump (Charlie Baker, the most popular politician in the US, always opposed Trump and was one of the first elected Republicans to support the "Never Trump" platform). Trump is likely going to be trounced in this election, and so I don't know how Schilling (who so far follows a Trump-like strategy) can entertain running more than two years from now, against a senator who is very popular in the state.

Schilling could stand a chance in a solid Red state, somewhere in the mid-west, or even in Arizona where he still may have some celebrity. But he stands no chance in Massachusetts and his grand standing is embarrassing.

What a piece of shit. Stop giving this jackass airtime. Just because he could throw a baseball fast and accurately doesn't entitle him to having an opinion anyone cares about. Go away, Curt. No one automatically thinks you're a stupid racist fucktard because you're a white Christian male.

Pretty sure if you look at the voting record, American Jews do, by and large, support the Democratic Party and generally hold liberal views. His question could have been put with more tact but I don't think there is anything inherently stereotypical with the claim.

He really shouldn't conflate religious beliefs and support for a nation (Israel). Those aren't equal.

And he shouldn't then conflate that with Christianity.

You can be Jewish by heritage rather than simply on a religious level. Which is why it's more dodgy.

Isn't Tapper Jewish on a religious level? If he asked an atheist this question because he parents were Jews or whatever then sure, I could see it.

"I don't understand how minorities and women can vote for Trump" is a pretty common line on this very forum, but I don't believe the people asking it are racist or sexist. Schilling is a moron, but this is the epitome of fabricated controversy.

why did OP transliterate "as someone who practices the jewish faith" to "as a jew"? way to sensationalize the hell out of that. guy is an idiot but OP is really milking it
Because the former is too long? and being on mobile I wasn't sure if the title would fit. The word Jew is not offensive by itself when used to refer to the people, so I wasn't trying to sensationalize anything, it's only offensive when used as an adjective.

I'm not the only one that did this. See this headline "Curt Schilling: Why Do Jews Vote Democrat?"
http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2016/10/21/curt-schilling-why-do-jews-vote-democrat/

"It is widely recognized that the attributive use of the noun Jew, in phrases such as Jew lawyer or Jew ethics, is both vulgar and highly offensive. In such contexts Jewish is the only acceptable possibility. Some people, however, have become so wary of this construction that they have extended the stigma to any use of Jew as a noun, a practice that carries risks of its own. In a sentence such as There are now several Jews on the council, which is unobjectionable, the substitution of a circumlocution like Jewish people or persons of Jewish background may in itself cause offense for seeming to imply that Jew has a negative connotation when used as a noun."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew_(word)

he didnt mention or say jew in that sentence...
You're right, but then he immedialy switched to "ok, but why do other Jews vote democrat"

Just stupid. If he really wants an answer to that question, he can walk into a synagogue and ask a rabbi. In this context, he just wants to show up the interviewer.

I'm sure Zionists vote Republican. Not everyone who is Jewish is a Zionist though. Many Jewish people are non-practicing and only identify Jewish as an ethnicity. So it's sort of like assuming that issues that important to Christians should be important to all Anglo-Saxons, Pinoys, Italians, etc.

Then consider that your largest Jewish populations tend to live in or near liberal areas. Plus they know a thing or two historically about persecution and therefore might empathize better with other minorities.

It's not hard to guess why they'd vote Democrat.

it is when you're curt schilling

I don't understand how anyone who professes to follow Jesus could vote for Donald Trump or even the Republican Party. They seem to be the antithesis of the Christian faith and everything Jesus stood for.
These people DONT read the bible that's why. They aren't educated

the way Curt talks is the exact same way how average misinformed Trump supporters talk like,
a former friend of mine spoke the exact same way as Curt with misinformation, insinuation, assumptions and stereotypes
