CVG: PS3 - 'near final' hardware present at E3

Speaking on conditions of strict anonymity, a trusted insider source has revealed to C&VG that Sony will unveil an actual prototype PS3 unit on their next-generation booth and that rather than just a mock up, it will be a near final design of the next generation of PlayStation.

It's been such a closely guarded secret that the appearance of PS3 has been deliberately kept off any show program sheet and will apparently be kept under strict guard by members of the LAPD.

Discuss.

Looks like this E3 has gone from being just X360's big unvieling to actually being the first show down of next gen hardware. My excitement has shot through the roof.

I wonder if its a good idea for sony to draw more attention to how much better next generation games look when x360 has such a big headstart.

"near final design" != near finished hardware

I'd expect some aspects of PS3 hardware to be nearly finished, but not all.

I think they're much more referring to the system's outward appearance and design than internal hardware.

I swear to god, Microsoft started a giant game of chicken. (and for this I do thank them) A few months ago, we thought only the 360 would take center stage at the big show, but now all three players are showing the goods.

^^^ edit: your joke was better :lol

Boy the 360 fanboys are going to have to wall themselves in if Rev and PS3 are both significantly cleaner designs ;)

I heard they let the LAPD try out NFS most wanted but that they were disapointed with the lack of gunfire at the end of the highspeed chase. definately not a killer app

They didn't say it would be playing anything. I bet it is just an actual manufactured shell.

Same with revolution. They'll show the case and some video that "will closely resemble reality"

PS3 related patent?

39. A computing device, comprising: a graphics processing unit (GPU) capable of determining lighting characteristics for an object in real time, the lighting characteristics defined through a basis function, the GPU including a stream processor configured to split a stream of data associated with the lighting characteristics into multiple simultaneous operations.

40. The computing device of claim 39, wherein the computing device is a video game console.

41. The computing device of claim 39, further comprising: a display screen in communication with the GPU, the display screen configured to present image data representing the object.

42. The computing device of claim 39, wherein the stream processor is a programmable hardware unit capable of executing code that is replicated multiple times.

43. The computing device of claim 42, wherein the code that is replicated multiple times is configured to process one of a ray tracing algorithm and multiply and add operations for data derived from the ray tracing algorithm.

44. The computing device of claim 43, wherein the ray tracing algorithm determines a direct illumination lighting characteristic in real time and the multiply an add operation determine a secondary lighting characteristic in real time.

45. The computing device of claim 39, wherein the GPU is further configured to render the object through a process involving linear interpolation, such that the lighting characteristics are applied to the rendered object.

46. The computing device of claim 39, wherein the basis function is one of a wavelet and a spherical basis function.

Ok, add that new fps from Insomnia games.
:)

I really love both Metal Gear and Resident Evil. But I think it's too early to show them already. I'm really not expecting either to be on the show.

A separate processor dedicated only to calculations of lighting properties such as photon mapping, caustics etc. would be insanely cool. O_o

That's so unlikely :p

Well, I don't know, of course, but I don't think it'll feature extra logic like that.

CV&G is bullshit, they ran a story on Mafia 2 couple of years ago and I haven't heard ANYTHING about the game since then.

They just took the whole LAPD guarding the PS2 Pyramid thing and added some bs. Fake story, CVG sucks

worst source of info

Its like Microsoft took Sony's phrase "follow our lead" and suddenly every player is reacting to every move Microsoft now makes.

who's following who. sony announced they'd show the ps3 off before e3, then microsoft decided to one up them and release it on mtv.

Near-final hardware? No way. MS doesn't even have final hardware yet, and PS3 devkits are only in the hands of select devs.

CVG is full of it this time around.

"it will be a near final design of the next generation of PlayStation."

I hope they send that one to the PS3 design team, because they could use it :)

back in the mid-to-late 1990s, the "PSX2" was rumored to have a processor or DSP dedicated to lighting.

When they showed the PSP and its games during the TGS right before launch, I'm sure the average consumer thought, "Wow this thing is done and ready to go!" while the developers were all cringing, "Where's our devkits? Where are the tools/drivers? Our game ain't done yet!"

The same can be said for PS3. Any developers have their devkits yet?

"Don't come near this. I see you near this again I'm gonna take your vechile, I'm gonna let you walk back to your hotel, and I'm gonna let the homies up the hill run a train on your girlfriend."

In all seriousness, I suspect the real meaty PS3 stuff will get shown behind closed doors. I'm sure they'll have it on the floor in some form, but PSP will be their chief concern this year...hell, a hot looking GT Mobile would be enough for them to grab attention.

That would be the best decision they ever made.. Sony & Nintendo fans combined couldn't stand a chance.

All they have to do is hire Ian McDiarmid in his Emperor get up to walk on stage and say "Behold the power of this Fully Operational Playstation", and then have playable PS3's pop out of secret compartments hidden all over the room.
