At Anime Expo 2024, we had the opportunity to sit down with CyberConnect2’s Executive Vice President, Taichiro Miyazaki, to discuss the future of the beloved .hack series. Fans of the franchise, known for its immersive storytelling and pioneering approach to MMORPG-style gameplay within a single-player RPG, have been eagerly awaiting news about the next installment.

This led us to a simple question, “Are we going to see more .hack in the future?”

Miyazaki-san responded with a glimmer of hope for fans: “Within CyberConnect2, the topic of a new .hack is constantly in the background. However, we need the cooperation of Bandai Namco, the publisher. We have ideas, and if we get the okay, we would love to move forward.”
Interestingly, he continued by mentioning that Western fans have a lot of power when demanding these types of projects get the green light by sharing, “North America is our biggest market, so you have the biggest influence. Please send emails and peer pressure Bandai Namco to make it happen.”

The .hack series, which began in 2002 with .hack//Infection, quickly gained a cult following due to its unique concept and engaging narrative. The original quadrilogy of games, followed by the G.U. series, delved into the mysterious world of The World, a fictional MMORPG that blurs the lines between virtual and reality. Players took on the role of Kite and later Haseo, uncovering dark secrets and battling digital threats that had real-world consequences.
CyberConnect2’s dedication to the series has always been evident, and Miyazaki’s comments suggest that the team is eager to return to the .hack universe. However, the key to unlocking a new chapter in this beloved series lies with Bandai Namco and the vocal support of the fanbase. North American fans, in particular, hold significant sway, and their collective enthusiasm could be the catalyst needed to reignite the series.

As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the potential for a new .hack installment grows. Whether it be through remasters, reimaginings, or entirely new stories, the return of .hack would undoubtedly be met with widespread excitement and anticipation. For now, fans can keep the dream alive by expressing their support and showing Bandai Namco that the demand for more .hack is stronger than ever.

I'm from Europe, so apparently my voice doesn't count all that much. But since you're from North America, you'd better start writing emails to Bamco right this minute. :p
