Me and my friends decided to play Mario Kart on the big screen TV downstairs in our dorm today (since we ALWAYS play in her room).

So, we're really into the game (we play for a few hours) and decided to play Battle (the game where you throw bombs at each other, trying to get 4 stars).

While we're playing, this guy comes along and starts to make so many annoying comments about how bad we are losing against my friend (she's like a fucking pro and she's kicking our asses pretty bad).

After her 7th consecutive win :)lol), the guy comes to me and says, "You've been P-owned." I'm like, "OK?" Apparently with him, there's a fine line between the Internet and everyday life.

Anyway, at the the end of the game, the score is 20-00-05 (me)-06. Then, he goes on and on about how he could destroy us at Starfox (a game I've never even played) and about how we all lost to a girl (mind you, the girl OWNS the game and we play on and off. It's just at Battle...in the racing part, it's anybody's game).

We all ignore him until he scuttles back onto his computer somewhere.

What a way to make friends: launch video-geek insults, coupled with some Internet jargon. Besides, it's just a fucking game!

Shouldn't this be retitled "people with no social skills are SO annoying!"

I'm a video game geek, but I can hold a conversation, talk to girls, and not smell bad. And yeah, somtimes I'll even say shit like pooooown, because I think scarcasm is funny. But generalizing is way more fun!

Agreed. Video game dorks and the way they describe games (and get SO excited in the middle of their descriptive discussion) is such a huge turnoff and probably contributes to why I remain a (not even) casual gamer anymore, heh.

Anybody who ever tries to pronounce "pwned" in a serious, non sarcastic manner IRL should be punched in the face immediately.

That's what he did. We didn't even know who this guy was! Even the person winning tried to ignore him.

My friend's last girlfriend tried fitting in with the group by picking up gaming jargon that none of us ever used. She'd constantly say things like "Oh man, you got pwned!" and other shit I've tried to block out. I've got no idea where she picked it up, because he was never dumb enough to say shit like that.

Needless to day, I uickly grew to hate that annoying bitch.

Wait, so nobody knew who he was? Some random guy just walked up and started critiquing you guys for no reason? :lol

I can't even stand when people say 'owned' in person. :X

I prefer the more eloquent "She's kicking your fucking asses!". Obviously delivered to individuals I have known for at least a few months.

Gaming geeks are indeed annoying:

- Assholes who hum the Mario Bros. theme song when in GameSpot.
- Nerd fights are the best thing ever. When nerds try to be condescending toward each other, its the next best thing to sliced bread

I don't know shit about shit
I hate when motherfuckers like that talk to you at GS or EB and try to explain videogames and the developers and shit to you, like you're a goddamn retard or something. The whole time I'm just standing there, tuning him out thinking, "Fucking hell, I know all this shit! I play videogames too, I just don't talk about it all the goddamn time! Shit!"

Honestly, that's one of the reasons I toned down on my gaming habits; to avoid ever becoming like those losers. And don't get me started on the fuckin' anime geeks. They always try to explain anime to you like you have no clue what you're looking at and I'm like, "Why the FUCK would I be standing here in Barnes and Goddamn Noble reading this manga for 10 minutes if I didn't know it went from right to fucking left???"

Fucking nerds.

Hmmm... so you pretended like you didn't know what he was talking about, when in fact through membership with this forum, you probably know far more gaming nerd talk than that guy does. I mean, sure it's up to you to choose to speak like an idiot in life or on forums, but to pretend like you don't know that lingo in order to pretend like you're on some kind of higher social plane than that guy is pretty sad in and of itself.

I mean, if you don't like that stuff, just tell the idiot to shut the hell up and get lost. It just kinda irks me to know some people know exactly what others are talking about and pretend otherwise sometimes... maybe that's not what you did, but it kinda seems like it.

Kinda funny, when reading your title I immedeately thought of a guy I saw at EB a few days ago. I traded in GTA:SA PS2, and asked for a used copy of Mario Kart GC, and this customer at the other till gave me a thumbs up. It was kinda akward.

I ended up getting MX vs ATV unleashed that game aunzes all sorts of ass I'm so glad I didn't get kiddy karts lollers.

I know what you're getting at, but let's just distinguish between this and doing it randomly anywhere. Doing it in some EB or GS is some lame ass attempt to let people know that you know games. j00 r r33t. Cock of the controller. And so on. Doing it elsewhere though, is just because it's a catchy tune.

You know who's more annoying? People on IRC who nitpick about certain things, for example: Dead.

He just bitched at me online that's really annoying and bothersome.

Your act is getting stale, Dad. I mean, Dead.

So I take it that fallout hums the Mario Bros. song :D . I think its annoying everywhere.

I'd like to state that most of the people that go to gaming stores are complete nerds. I must admit, I am one too (or else I would not be here). However, I work out and look aight I guess. So when I walk into a store, employees do a double take that I get lets say Lumines or Metal Slug instead of an EA Sports game. In fact, its bothersome when I'm looking at games for good deals and the employees steer me towards mindless action or sports. Come on, equal treatment here!

Lets not forget the gaming geeks that wear shirts at least several years old with hair so greasy it can blind people if it hits the light at a certain angle. Yet, these guys spend $200+ on games at a time. I hope these guys aren't planning to get laid because they're not.

Chrono: You got a point but internet nerd fights are a lot better. I've watched this shit happen in real life. It is tits. Porn star tits in fact.

well not really...yet

I usually say pwned in my nerd voice. I've got a special one for that.

It took me a second to realize you were talking about GameStop. Not having been in one for a couple of years, they're something of a foreign entity to me.

i really hate it when i go to my local EB and the staff reverts to their salesperson mode. Many of them have admitted that i've told and shown them more about the PSP, it's features and quirks than anyone they've met. They know i shop around for the best deals, often online. They know my interest in games don't revolve around sports or whatever the usual hot new game is. They also know i worked at GameStop for three years. Saying you worked at a game store is the codephrase for "don't treat me like the guy who just traded in his NES collection for fifty dollars in store credit". But after all this, i still get casual game conversations that include "Well, you know you could trade those three games in for HOT NEW GAME!"

What bothers me most about PC/game/anime geeks is when you express interest in the hobby, and they start talking and never shut up. Judging by my completely blank and distant look and lack of contribution to the "conversation", you should be able to tell that i don't care about the similarities of Dragon Ball Z and Naruto or what regular expression you grepped to find all occurences of a word.

My girlfriend does this, what's the best way to say please stop saying that fucking shit without pissing her off? And she pronounces it like 'pnned', I cringe every fucking time, I swear.
"I think it's cool that you're taking interests in the things i do, but it's even cooler when you STFU n00b."

Feel free to replace the second part with something less inflammatory, like "but I really don't talk like that in real life."

I occasionally hum the Super Mario Sunshine song from the very first revealing video. It was such a freaking awesome tune, and they never added it into the final game :(

Spaniard here: Mmmm, I guess that if I ever go to the States or UK, I'd better do a check on what words are only for the Internet and which ones are for real life.

It really is hard to tell¡¡¡

:lol I used to get those people all the time working at Gamestop. Cut them some slack. They're probably unhappy most of the time. I feel like the least I can do is strike up a conversation with them, and give them a chance to show off their gamer knowledge to me. Its really no skin off my back to do so. Though, It always sucked when someone I knew, or an attractive girl, would walk into the store during such conversations.

The more more socially inept and awkward a nerd, the better. I still remember this one guy who came into the GS I worked at. He was a stereotypical nerd, with a perfect nasally nerd voice. We talked a little about whatever game he was buying, and somehow got on the topic of where I was going to school. I told him that I was currently going to University X, and planned on transferring to University Y. He then says something to the effect of, "Yeah, my friend, Mark, is going to Rutgers next year, and there's this annoying girl who's obsessed with him, and she's applying for Rutgers to stalk him. Now he's gonna have to deal with her for another four years!", delivered awkwardly with chuckles here and there.

I was floored. He was telling me a story about someone who I didn't know at all. Plus, it was a story that would've been awkward as hell even if it was about himself. His segue to tell me this story was simply the topic of college. If I at least told him I was going to Rutgers, it would have had some relevance.

All I could say was, "Oh man, that sucks for him.", and give a forced laugh.

I don't understand how you could hate someone like that. Though unintentional, he's hilarious, and a nice guy.

I ignored him (when I said "I was like, 'OK'," that's what I was THINKING). I don't even say "pwned" on the Internet, let alone in real life. I ignore those kinds of boundary-hopping phrases.

...but yeah, how this all came back to me is great.

To tell you the truth, I do this all the time. For the most part, I don't want to associate myself socially with too many geeks. I have two or three good friends who would fall into the geek category but I make exceptions for them because of other things that I might like about them. I guess I do consider myself on a different social plane. I wouldn't necessarily say it's higher because I don't look down on geeks. I simply choose not to associate myself with a lot of them.

It's in there, just where you'd mostly miss it. Leave it on the title screen and eventually it will play along with a gameplay demo montage.

Even though it's annoying to use internet slang in real life, the fact that you even know what pwned means makes you an internet geek. Don't act so high and mighty!

I say owned in real life, but only in my own house, and mainly to my brother. Though I can throw it in a conversation when the topic calls for it (IE, the Spurs owned the Nuggets a couple nights ago). I don't even know most of the net lingo, let alone use any of it.

I don't mind getting into conversations at a game store, but it depends what kind of day I'm having and what the topic is. I have to use a lot more tact...any game I don't like I think sucks a dick, but I can't really say that there. So if someone brings up a game they like that I don't, I simply say I'm not into that type of game. Whereas on the net where shit talking and fanboyish crusades is the name of the game, the only way to make your point heard is to speak strong (IE, the RPG genre fucking sucks).

I do get a chuckle from sales people who try and impress you with their "insider knowledge" (which they know doubt get from the same sites and boards that I do), then end up telling you stuff that you know is complete bullshit. But I'll be damned if I'm gonna waste time correcting anyone...I simply nod my head and grin.
