Damnit I think I want a PSP now

Well I decided to go out and buy a DS the moment I saw the Castlevania preview in EGM. Now that I have one, I'm enjoying the hell out of the Metroid demo that came with it. I think that'll be an instant buy when it hits. Other than that, I'll be getting Ridge Racer very soon and I'm thinking about Mario 64. I'm mainly buying it to have something to mess around with on lunch breaks at work. The local arcade closed its doors and my lunches have been soooo boring and depressing since.

Plus, I never played Aria of Sorrow. Ordered a copy today so happy times are a comin'!

As for the PSP, I don't know if I'll want it or not. A Metal Gear card game does not excite me at all, but if Twisted Metal and Wipeout are coming, I might be there. Just as long as they're not ports. Ports would suck. New games are the way to go. Otherwise the PSP can eat my ass.

Oh, and if the PSP ever has a Jumping Flash game, I'd be onboard for sure. :)

I heavily, HEAVILY reccomend against Ridge Racer DS. Go with Feel the Magic XX/XY.

Seriously? That game looks goofy as hell. I don't think its for me. But what is so bad about Ridge Racer DS? Tell me more. I kinda thought it looked like the original with some extra tracks thrown in.

Keep your DS until you are back. Buy some worth GBA games that you haven´t played and play the hell of them until you come back. There are not enough games on PSP and DS right now to play them so much time, you have a much better selection if you go now with GBA games.

When you are back judge the games and the price and decide between two if you have to.

Well... I guess if you like RR64 it isn't so much worse than that. But the steering wheel stylus control is essentially worthless and utterly broken, colission detection is just horrible, and on top of that... sometimes - even with the better cars - the game feels prohibitively slow (in terms of sense of speed).

D-Pad control is competent and you can get the hang of drifting if you like, but I always didn't like the gameplay of RR64/RRPSX so it never did anything for me.

Heh, as for Feel the Magic XY/XX... yes it has very goofy elements. But besides being very quirky, it's perfect for the intended use you have for the DS. If you want to play between lunch breaks, FtM is an awesome pick-up-and-play title that you can get into and out of in mere seconds and you wouldn't have a second thought. It's also really fun, albeit a bit too short and lacking fundamental replay value (dressing up chicks and poking them is not my idea of replay value, mind you). It's worth it for your situation, imho

If you love Mario 64 definitely get the DS version, it is fantastic. If I use the touch screen I'm not bothered by the controls at all, the only problem is that side flips are more difficult to do. I kinda wish they had an option for the "control circle" thing to stay in it's place when you reach the limit, but it's not all that bothersome. All the stuff they added is great, really freshens up the game if you were familiar with it. There are also tons of minigames that would be great for short work breaks (you have to unlock them, but it's easy to do).

And I agree the Metroid demo ROCKS, the stylus works like a mousepad, it's so great. I can't picture any handheld having better controls for a FPS, and I bet it could awesomely handle RTS games as well. I figure if developers have any really good/innovative ideas (and it seemed like they did from all the quotes when it was unveiled) then they'll take a bit of R&D time to figure them out and getting them working well, so we probably won't DS step into it's own for a year or so. But, in the meantime we'll get Wario Ware, Metroid, Advance Wars, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart and it's also really nifty for all those GBA games, way better screen and more room for your hands.

Just heard something interesting - the trailer for THUG2 Remix for the PSP is apparently just the PS2 game running at the PSP's resolution. Not kidding here, folks.

I orginally regretted my purchase of Ridge Racer DS since Urban GT is actually fun as hell. Since then though I find myself playing RR more. If you like RR I say pick it up. As for Feel the Magic... it's one of the few DS games I didn't buy. Loved Wario Ware but there just isnt enough in FTM to justify the money. Eighteen mini-games for $30 isn't the same as 180 like in WW. Oh yeah, and unlocking clothes doesn't do it for me either. I'm sure it's a fun game but I doubt I'll ever pick it up.

But that doesn't make sense since some of the areas seen in the video contain modified elements not in the PS2 version. :|

Is that right? Maybe they programmed them on the PS2 engine then? I don't know, I haven't played either game, but I heard it from an Activision employee who's working on the product. Can't vouch for his reliability, though. So, yeah..

*Actually, there's no maybe about it. I just re-read the IM, he said the PS2 engine with the PSP's resolution.

Well, at least I could have sworn that there were. I'll watch the video again and see, but I mean... yeah I was pretty sure. But maybe I'm wrong, I haven't played my copy of THUG 2 so extensively that I couldn't be mistaken.

I have a dilemma I'm sure a lot of other people do (including some in this thread I'd imagine). I want both a DS and a PSP... but not yet, neither one currently have software that I want (both have software coming out that I want but none at launch). PSP screen and graphics are just so beautiful, graphics whore in me can't pass that up forever.

I know what you mean, the past week or so has turned me from the 'wait 6 months' camp to the 'must buy at launch' one

Me too. The moment I saw Head On + Paris Track, I was hooked. Now I just need the damn thing.

the standard line from nintendo advocates is becoming "both launches are shit." admirable of them to concede that there's nothing worth playing on ds. less so to disingenuously slate the psp's immensely promising early software. ridge racers and lumines are perfectly executed, "AAA" games with a richness and polish that's unprecedented on handhelds. they'd be a credit to any console. minna no golf and vampire chronicles are solid genre entries that stand up to their console counterparts and utterly shame any handheld predecessors. these are the games i've played, and they're enough to make the psp launch unusually strong as launches go, and freakishly strong as handheld launches go.

i don't know if it's possible to honestly advocate the ds at this point. i'd recommend altogether filtering out the voices of its fans. buy a psp as soon as you're comfortable with the price.

Is Twisted Metal coming out at PSP U.S. launch? If so, better launch than DS and +1 purchase for me. :O

I love my DS though. :)

What do you love about the DS? Playing import DS games? Or your GBA games? Just curious.

Best game in the series. Cant believe how much fun me and my friends had with it.

Agreed. The level designs are just top notch in TM2. I like Black alot also, but TM2 really put everything together just right. The Paris, New York and Antarctica were my most played levels in that game.

Paris is probably my favourite level. I remember the first time we got the Eiffel Tower to fall down, WHOA! :lol

That was definetly awesome. Going up to the roof tops and ramping around while firing at an opponent. Lots of fun.

There's a Paris track in the PSP TM also:

They want it to fail. They want it to crash and burn because they've got so much emotionally invested in the Nintendo handheld monopoly that they can't even begin to conceive of the possibility of their most hated company, the scum of the earth who stole Nintendo's rightful throne as undisputed console gods, muscling in on a second market. It hurts them deep inside.

Not all of them, of course, but it's easy enough to pick out the ones for whom that is the reason.
heh, this actually has some truth to it. can't stand them either. ugh.

Man, I can't wait for the US PSP launch. Of course, Lumines and the ability to watch Carnivale wherever I go is nice, but Twisted Metal just has me all sorts of excited.

Why suddenly my opinion comes from a "nintendo advocate?

Given his situation, it´s completely absurd to stick with a PSP for four months with only RR and Lumines to entertain himself. Is much better to buy four of five good GBA games and play them on DS while he is Israel, there is a lot of more variety and surely he will find what he needs to maintain himself entertained.

Then, when he is back, he will have a much better perspective about buying another system.

I think is the most reasonable thing to do.

I don't really get this mentality of PSP vs DS.

I've had PSP for a few weeks now, put dozens of hours into RR and Lumines, and am absolutely loving it. I hate to agree with Kaz Hirai, but this thing is going to bring a whole new market of portable gamers in, much like the original PlayStation did.

I haven't been playing DS much, but I'm probably more excited for the games in the long term. I bashed the US launch games because they didn't use the system appropriately. But shit like Band Brothers is just completely new and cool. There'll be plenty for PSP owners to be jealous of, wait and see.

Two brand new hand helds with quite dramatically different experiences. I'd say it all worked out pretty well. I'm glad to own both.

Horrible!!
I love The Twisted Metal series but this thing is capable of Twisted Metal Black calibur visuals.
Damn this 5th rate ps1 trash!!!
Classic game but why pay full price this is bullshit!

On another note what are all of the known US Launch games.

You sir need new eyes.

Lumines and Wario Ware Touched are all the games you need for either of the handhelds. All the other stuff is just icing on the cake.

Real screen shot?

twisted-metal-head-on-20050105061927013.jpg

This one must be a mock up

There is a very large difference.
The difference between these two is ps1 to ps2 difference.
What the hell give the pictures state that they are both psp media but they look totally different.

You do realize that one is direct feed while another is a grainy and washed out picture of the PSP running the game, right? Maybe if they were pictures of the same area...

The earlier one was 'bitched' up quickly for display at e3.

You can watch the CES trailer in Quicktime or Windows Media.

*goes back to HW*

I realize the first is a direct feed but I don't think the second is a true screen shot at all.
I know i'll probably get it regarldess being a Twisted Metal mark.

Fact is the visuals should be on par with twisted metal black because I've seen what psp can do.

The difference between the two is shitty screen cap from video of someone filming someone else play it on PSP vs. frame buffer shot direct from Sony.

For better video captures of play on an actual PSP, see IGN's coverage from CES. If you have and Insider account check out the 640x360 quicktimes.

Edit: IGN's CES vids show that the game holds up very well against the "mock up" shot.

Tell me where you can find a Ps1 game that looks as good as the first screen. Thank you.

No. The geometry is far more complex in this unique screenshots than most other screenshots you've shown. The lighting is also much much better. And I'm not even talking about textures.

These : "This game looks like a PSone game lolool" comparaisons need to stop.
