I think it's weird that the end of the story-line is anime only, but it makes a lot of sense and makes me hopeful that the quality will be maintained for V3. The second game pulls out all the stops to still be as engaging as the first one despite the fact that you already know what Monokuma is and what happened to Hope's Peak. I don't know if they could do that again with Makoto and friends for 20+ hours.

I think Makoto's storyline is gonna be very interesting, just because of the mystery of who the mastermind could be (assuming we're not being trolled about it not being Junko again).
And the Despair storyline is gonna be fucking painful to watch.
We're gonna lose Chiaki again and watch some happy high school students get more and more fucked up.

Right now Killer Killer just seems to be showing us how parts of the Future Foundation normally operate, it's entirely possible Takumi or the other members might enter the fray later on in the story, though.
Ch 4/5 spoilers (in regards to the image)
That is a mannequin that Jyuzo made so he could blow it up in front of an audience and make people think he was a murderer/despair-type. There's no reason it actually had to look like Makoto, Jyuzo literally made someone he works with have it look like him for no reason other than pure spite.
Months later and I'm still not over it. I mean, it hurt real bad. I don't get why, either, as when I look at it the signs should've been there and she's a bit too perfect. But still. God, it's like one of the worst deaths ever for me.

everyone knows it was Makoto who defeated Junko, since the Killng School Life was broadcast world wide. I mean sure they aren't necessarily Junko followers, but Makoto is the symbol of Hope. ... And yeah, Jyuzo is dicks
Anywho, Ep 1 of Side: Future is up on Funi!
Edit: As a Canadian I am getting not available in my territory message... Funi, plz.
Edit 2:
Recant what I said earlier. After watching Side Future Ep 1, he clearly just doesn't like Makoto.

Yeah for me it hurt because of how she found out she did it and no one else would accept it, she just kept on pushing it. Didn't you fight Sonia like 3 times cause she refused to believe it? Fucking Nagito
I kinda had a feeling Chisa was gonna go first tbh. Not really all that sad since we barely knew her. I do like pretty much the entire cast so far based off what we saw here, I'm excited to see more of them. Less so to see them die.
Also... is Hagakure fucking trapped outside?! Is he not even part of the game?
Chisa, since killing her off is the easiest way to get Munakata off the rails and without her there's no voice in the middle ground.
Given what she said though, I imagine that she's the "secret character" who shows up in Despair Arc that preview people were forbidden from talking about, especially since they apparently get a new teacher in the episode.
Good stuff. Think I would rather this be a game. Seems like something that would be amazing to play, though I do like the different perspectives that really only a show or movie could offer. It was kinda fluff until the very end, but overall I thought it was fairly good. The characters seem interesting, but I feel as if the character moments when they do happen would translate better to a Video Game. I'm all about that characterization but I don't know how well that will show across 12 episodes where there's someone dying in each one. I don't know if a Game Series like this really translates well to an Anime especially when characters in these games are key.
Excited to see more, and the Despair Arc should be sweet because we already have an idea of who they are, and it's more of an expansion on everyone's character.
They're really doing they're own thing because while "Hope's Peak High School" isn't technically a wrong translation... I have literally never seen anyone use anything other than "Academy" before. I don't even think they did in the sub or dub of The Animation.
1) The original voice actress retired because she was suffering from dementia and continued working well into her illness, friggin' chill dude.
2) The new VA is fine, interviews make it sound like they put a lot of thought into how they were going to take over the role and there's even a point where they sounded pretty identical. Give it more than five minutes.
After watching the first episode I can say I'm pleasantly surprised - it wasn't nearly as awful as I thought it was going to be. The direction was surprisingly competent, the music was good and nothing really stood out as being so awful that it would make the show unwatchable.
Unfortunately, some of my fears did turn out to be true:
- The ugly blue/red lightning that covers pretty much every scene and basically drains all color from them makes the show very ugly to look at. This is especially disappointing considering how colorful the games were.
- The pacing was just way too fast. There is a reason the games spend a long time just establishing characters before the murders start. Here, it's pretty hard to care about anyone, since most of them only spoke one or two sentences.
And obviously, the person who the show actually spend a bit of time developing is the first to die. What a surprise.
- I don't like the characters. It seems like they just made them way too exaggerated to cover up for the fast pace mentioned above. Because of this most of them just fell like a joke, even by Danganronpa's standards. And not a good joke either. This might improve later on though.
Still, it's good enough for what it is (more Danganronpa) so whatever, I'll keep watching.

Even if she is/was the traitor, I don't think she acted out of malice, she seems to have a genuine long-term connection with Jyuzo and Munakata.
Her being the teacher of the DR2 class means we might see her show up in the despair side. Kodaka definitely has something up his sleeves with the two arcs format here.
What are you guys watching it on? Trying on Xbox One, why does it say it's episode 13? Also, when I click to watch it, it says "Content not Found" then the App crashes.

Oh no she's definitely showing up, part of Despair Arc's first ep is introducing the class' new (female) teacher after their first one left/died/who knows

It says episode 13 on the website, too. I'd say that I think they're trying to pass it off as DR Season 2, but 1) there's literally a 3 in the title and 2) it'd still be episode 14
Well shit, what a inconvenience. Hopefully they get this sorted. Signed up to Funimation's streaming specifically for Danganronpa and so far I'm not impressed with their service.
A pretty good start. It's much better than the anime of the first game.
So Kodaka
pulled a Maizono 2.0, as Chisa was quite important in the promotionals leading to the broadcast - but with the difference that we may see her (and probably Kyosuke and Jyuzo) in the Despair arc. I quite liked the final sequence with a remix of New World Order as background music, even if I still need to get accustomed to Monokuma's new voice.
I was actually scared for
Asahina
, as the rumor mill was quite strong with
her
as the first sacrificial lamb.
Also, seeing the Remnants of Despair was great, even if we still were denied a full animated view of Izuru. I wonder if they'll be shown later in either the Future or the Despair arcs. I can't wait for the other series to start and show Junko's (and probably Matsuda's) involvement with the Ultimate Hope and his subsequent fall.

me too. well, a one month free trial. I have only used the phone app, which was good and Space Dandy looked amazing on my phone. the Xbox app works, just not for Danganronpa. I had added it into my queue, and the queue even says no videos, so I don't think it is an issue with the app itself. at least I don't think.
and spoilers on twitter already. glad i already watched it. also surprised at how fast a bootleg has gone up.
Is Hagakure considered part of this killing game, even though he is stuck out side?
That Japanese Monokuma voice is awful. I liked all the other Japanese voices but damn, I don't think I'll ever warm to the Monokuma one. Pretty decent opening episode though and seeing the Remnants of Despair in action was hype.
1. I really don't like the "Super High School Level" terminology. It's a mouthful and it's so much less evocative and straightforward than "Ultimate." NISA did a good job with the change in term. SHSL even starts to lose its meaning when characters are no longer in high school, yet keep the same abilities they did then. "Ultimate" works better in that respect, too.
2. The red blood. I surprisingly missed the signature pink blood the series is known for, but, as one would expect, the red blood is more gruesome and striking. I'd say it probably fits better for the dark tone they're going for, but it's not like the games weren't.
3. I don't like Monokuma's Japanese voice (new or old). Much prefer it in English; guess I'll have to get used to it.
The episode was a strong start. Felt kind of slow at the start with the recap stuff, but it picked up the pace after a bit, and at least those parts had the Tragedy flash backs. And it ended on a very Danganronpa-like note: unexpected and gruesome. I also thought that
nurse lady was going to end up being a traitor for some reason, so I really didn't think she'd be the first one to get offed.
Not too into hearing Kagura everytime the big black man opens his mouth. I don't understand the reason behind that decision, or really a lot of things about that character design. Maybe it'll make sense later.

. I also heard the rumor about that person dying in episode 1, some troll sent it into my ask box on tumblr after I said I didn't want to hear spoilers. I called them out on it being fake though, even though
all the survivors were on my list of potential first kills. Chisa actually was, too tbh.

I'm thinking he was probably knocked out and outfited with a bracelet just before the entrances were blocked off.
Also two thoughts:
1)
Chisa could still easily be the traitor. Mukuro was the second kill of DR1 and she still ended up being someone working with Junko.
2)
If Chisa was a teacher at Hope's Peak, that means that she was probably privy on the details to the IKP, I have to wonder if that will be relevant to either side of this story.

Pretty great episode all in all, pacing was a bit too fast though. Still it was pretty cool to see The Remnants of Despair in all of their Despair-y glory. Bring on next weeks episode already!

Gozu seems pretty chill, he's an easy early favorite out of the new guys. I bet something cool happens with knife pet man. Army of animals was really cool too, that snake scarf.

Yeah, you do. You'll miss alot of context if you don't. As a matter of fact if you have any intention of playing Danganronpa 2 you really should not be in this thread because of major spoilers.
I think this is actually a very good idea. After 2 I was thinking that it will feel really forced to have another traditional Danganronpa game with the same arc. Ending it with an anime and having the third game start fresh is the best way to continue the series I feel like. Of course they could have made Danganronpa 3 totally different structure wise from the first 2 main games.
But then again I'm one of those that think the overarcing plot in these games is not even close what makes the games interesting or good.
Episode 1: Pretty decent start loved seeing the Ultimate Despairs in their true form.
The red blood surprised me but it seems to work, is the pink blood back for the despair arc?
Hearing rise's voice as Daisaku absolutely shocked me, guessing there is a story reason for that explained later. Guess I'll have to adjust and adapt to the new Monokuma's voice.
Sucks that Chisa had to be first but I kinda had an idea considering her being the friendliest of the new characters.
Other than that onwards to the despair arc and beyond.
