Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Overheating? Dammit....

It's been about 3 1/2 years since I built this computer. Guess it's time to build again...

Using HWmonitor, I see that my card reached 181F.

Dammit.

People read computer hardware temperatures in Fahrenheit? Let alone have the option to? Color me surprised!

I would have no way of understanding what 181F means in terms of computer heat. This is coming from someone who group up knowing the F system.

While you may want to upgrade, overheating shouldn't be the catalyst. Just pop it open and go through it with a can of compressed air and maybe install another fan for airflow.

Not really, plenty of us have used it and no one has been getting banned for it. A technicality, it's just in there because it'd feel wrong to not mention it.

That was only one trollpost on GameFAQs.

There's a lot of people here alone who play the game solely on 60fps.

Oh ok. Great. The only thing about the 60fps unlock is the screen tearing is kind of annoying. I haven't tried it after forcing vsync through the nvidia control panel.

I have an Intel 950 i7 3.07 ghz cpu and two Nvidia GTX 460 1GB GPUs in SLI mode, with 6GB of RAM. This config has never really ever, EVER given me any sort of FPS slowdown at 1920x1080 resolution on any game I've ever played.

But with this game and the FPS unlock my framerate will stutter, even in places like Undead Asylum. The only mods I have are the DSFix and the flora texture mod or whatever.

Did I underestimate the performance requirements of this game or should I just mess with the settings in a different way?

Random DSfix appreciation post, and likely nothing that hasn't been said already, but:

Having now spend a few 100 hours at 1080p and 60fps (plus some nice mods), I can't believe how much better I am able to simply SEE the game, and take in its visual information, and better understand what is going on in the world of Lordran. Much of it is tiny detail, but still brings better appreciation for, if nothing else, the detail the artists put into this. So much I missed on PS3.

For instance:
-Havel is covered in chains--not only on his gauntlets, but draping down his armour--likely the cause for the excellent poise
-a dog turns the wheel in Blighttown
-the Oysters in Ash Lake have tiny skulls inside their mouths
-New Londo Ruins is covered by a dome of sorts, with a hole which streams what little light there is. This blew my mind.
-I can see down into Blighttown from up top. Stuff like this gives me a better sense of spatial awareness
There was a few more "whoa" moments, but I can't remember right now at this late hour. Anybody else notice more stuff?
I noticed the Zweihander is rusted/scratched/cracked at certain points.

How would Havel's chains improve poise?

So far I only have the YOU SO BEST/YOU DIED LIKE A BITCH mod. I love it. :D

Does the fps unlocker still mess with your ability to jump certain distances?

I heard that replacing the sign is actually a detriment. Something about the sign having to cascade through each person's IP connections (good ole P2P), meaning that if person A places a sign it must filter through person B and person C's games to get to Person D. If A keeps spamming their sign, person D will always get the old incorrect summon sign. What's the concensus on this?
Can someone confirm this? I'm having trouble with summons too.

I think it has something to do with him being locked down there after he turned Hollow, hence having all the chains around him...maybe. :D

OK so I the issue I have with 3D is cleared after loading the game, exiting to the title screen and loading the game again. The target it back on the mob I am targeting and I can aim my bow.

No idea why ..... but It works now.

I'm new here, but I've been lurking for quite a while on the forums.

I'd like to dedicate my 2nd post to Durante. Without your brillant dsfix, I'd have never bought this game for my aging laptop in the first place.

My aging laptop which predates the Core ix series and has a Core 2 Duo @ 2.8 GHz, an ancient Mobility Radeon 4670 and 8 GB RAM runs the game relatively smoothly for me at a rendering resolution of 1680x945 set in the ini file, which surprised me greatly, considering even the readme file mentioned that my CPU is actually below the minimum requirements :lol

The touch of genius was in the implentation of the framerate unlocker. With it unlocked, I get a steady 30 - 35 FPS with dips to the high 20s in certain areas of Blighttown which is still very playable. When locked it goes down to 15 straight away which is intolerable to say the least.

The game is very CPU intensive to say the least, running GPUz to monitor the usage showed a maximum usage of only 75-80% GPU usage in the game, which indicated the CPU bottleneck on my rig which is no surprise at all I guess.

I tip my hat to you sir, and had already sent a nice package to you when you released the fix many moons ago.

Really good to hear.

When I loaded up 3d just now it was totally just working. Sorry for the lack of useful PMs. :D

Today I tried the framerate unlocker for the first time (I wanted to save it for New Game Plus, and to see if MS banned anyone for using it). It is a goddamned revelation. Mod of the Generation.

I now see what everyone's talking about with Blighttown. Since a white world tendency event's starting on Demon's Souls on Tuesday, this might be the right time to take a break on Dark Souls until I get a new computer.

Has anyone reported being able to get a steady 30 or 60 throughout the game, even in Blighttown, on a non-overclocked processor? Would a 3.5GHz i5 do the job?

Depending on the resolution, yep.

If you don't do anything ridiculous with the settings you should be fine.

I get about a 28-30 steady on my i5 and i7 (2500k/2600k) with the FPS capped at 30, but their both OC'd over 4GHz. About 60-48 (i5) and 60-55 (i7) with FPS set to 60.

On my older rig which is a Q9400 at stock speeds (2.6GHz) I get about 28-22fps with FPS capped at 30, and about 53-22 set to 60, depending direction you're facing. Lowest dips depending on action were probably about 19fps.

This was all without any other modding. With SweetFX and the Blighttown texture overhaul I'd need to recheck. But that's my experience on multiple rigs running nothing other than DSFix.

Uh... for some reason when I launch the game it appears as a small square in the corner.

Anyone heard of this?

*just kidding*

Guys I had to take a break...how do I update? I want the high res + 60 FPS.....

I have like Dsfix..from..err I don't know but I have one.

I only have a 1366x768 monitor on my laptop but thanks to Durantes mod this game looks fucking incredible. i unlocked the frame rate and get between 35 and 42 fps in all areas so far. Which is a massive step up from my ps3 and 360 versions.
Mod of the forever. Will post some pics later but at work now.

could try 1080p on my tv but i dont think my laptop could handle it all too well.
Gen 3 i7 3.2ghz
8gb ram
GT 640m

is the frame rates im getting now the best i could hope for?
Cant wait to move house so i have space for a meaty desktop.

If I am right then the game logic is tied to the framerate, so going above 30FPS would effectively mean you'll be speeding up the game. Enemies will attack more often (as they'll recover quicker), the traps will be faster, your rolls and jumps will be shorter etc etc. Solid 30FPS with downsampling from a high resolution is fine imo.

You're not right, not entirely anyway. The game definitely does NOT run at double speed when running at 60 fps. I know that sliding down ladders is messed up when running at 60fps, and something else I'm unaware of, but the rest of the game runs exactly as intended, only better.

Can anyone tell me how I can monitor the actual FPS in-game?

I can't seem to find how to get the console up.

I don't believe there is a way of viewing the fps via an in-game console, you'll have to use Fraps or something similar.

I don't know the particulars of it, but I've heard several well-known Dark Souls PvPers say that the 60 FPS unlock changes the properties of weapons. Probably not a big deal if you're doing PvE in offline mode, but I imagine something like that has a significant effect on PvP.

Afaik 60fps only affects physics based stuff, slightly. Animations still have the same duration.

The ladder issue is most likely a physics based problem too because there is a very tiny drop between getting out of the ladders and "being placed in the physical world".

I have never heard this and have PvPd quite a bit. What could they mean?

Is there something else I have to do in order to get Antializing working with dsfix? I've tried using 1 - 4 (Ultra) values in the .ini but it's just not working, Everything else works fine.

Using an Nvidia GTX 480, Thanks.

I just did some testing regarding the animations at 30 and 60fps.

30 fps animations of the fastest roll took 58 frames,
60 fps it took 116, which is spot on the double the frames. So there is no extended or shorten animations because of the framerate difference. The fact is at 30fps you are simply missing out on half the frames of the animation that are skipped entirely.

Also as a bonus, 30 and 60fps gifs slown down so you can see the missing frames:
30fpsdelgb.gif
60fps62xop.gif

If it's just "skipping" animation frames at 30 Fps then what is the reason for things like the roll when going back to the Asylum not working? Or am I misreading here?

The roll to the asylum works just fine. The other roll not working probably goes back to what I said early about physics based stuff not being so straight forward, it is a big jump and physics come into play, not just the animation.

unless I am crazy. I just did the roll back to the assylum the other day and it worked fine at 60fps. Perhaps I jumped

Because that requires you to be in midair for a while. Midair momentum is physics stuff and it's affected by the 60 FPS thing. You seem to drop like a rock so the jump is a lot more difficult.

(I haven't checked that jump in particular but the physics change was pretty obvious when I switched to 60 FPS for the first time.)

Awesome slowmotion gif I just made by capturing at 120fps and then playing at lower with all frames intact:

Animation in this game is so freaking good!

Game crashes after the char creation now. Using the latest DSfix.

€: now its realy small in the top left corner of the screen.

€2: never mind! fixed it ._.
