Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Yes you probably did something wrong. But you also reinstalled the entire game for no reason at all.

Library>right click on Dark Souls>properties>local files>verify integrity of game cache

Doing that instead of reinstalling will have steam check what the files on your pc are compared to what they should be. it will remove and replace any changes you've made to the game files and restore it to normal.

Well, now I know.

This game is frustrating me. I reinstalled, and it immediately crashes when I load it. I haven't even gone through GFWL yet (not sure if thats a step or not, I get a CD key when I boot so I assume I must register it with them). No idea what to do.

So, what do people feel is better. Playing normal or in 3D? I was going to try 3D tonight, but I am concerned I will screw up my DSFix setup or something.

Quick bump. Just something I wonder is an option since this game is so modified though fixes. Or even worth trying

Okay to ask a game question? Not sure if I'm handling this right... But what's the best plan of action if I can't beat an enemy or boss? Level at the area? Skip the boss? I'm near the entrance of the garden area and I can't beat the bell gargoyle and stuff...

Not sure this is the best place to ask this? I think there is an OT for this game. As oer your question, the bosses in this game are cheap as fuck without some hints on their weekness.
The bell gargoyle boss is weak against fire bombs. Stock up. I was pissed to find this out myself

I think you would be surprised how quickly you would catch up to where you left off. Being familiar with the environment and enemies makes a ridiculously huge difference in playtime. I think things that took 20+ hours my first playthrough were compressed down to like 2 or 3 in later playthroughs.

When you start that New Game Plus, it's ridiculous how fast you can run through the game. A mixture of being more powerful, knowing the layouts, and (in my case) having the master key means that you can burn through large portions of the game fairly quickly. It took me about 90 minutes to get to Sens Fortress on NG+, and I've seen speedruns where they manage to kill both Queelag and the Bell Gargoyles in about fifteen minutes.

You can skip quite a bit of the game if you know what you are doing.

The Helix mod for 3D works with DSfix. It's pretty good.

So I sortof have it working. I removed a HUD mod I had installed (Serious Demons SOulds-esque HUD) and it looks OK, but I have labels and such I dont think I should. (like it says fireball and flask in text but its in the middle of my screen)

My MODS are

Flora Overhaul
Revamped Stat Buff Icons
DS High res UI and Subtitles
Plus the DXfix obviously.

Edit: Ok I removed the high res UI and subtitles. That fixed that part. One last question, when I try to lock on someone, the circle is no where near them. Its on my health bar area. Any idea why? Also my health bar seems to jump around too.

SweetFX, regular ol' injectSMAA, and the original FXAA injector all break D3DOverrider. No idea why Nvidia Inspector's vsync is also busted... It certainly works fine for me while using post AA injectors.

Yep, turns out it was a video driver snafu on my laptop (never tested Inspector on the main rig), a 560M. So I updated to latest drivers, forced on V-Sync in Inspector, tearing gone. Thanks for getting me to take another look at that.

Edit: Anybody tried out the Blighttown and Sen's texture overhauls? I really like Sen's pretty much, not sure how to feel about Blighttown though...looks way too clean and plastic.

This after you played it once you can get to Anor Londo in about 3 hours whilst still exploring everywhere.

I triple dipped on the pc version. gives you 2 achievement lists on xbox live too :D

The Read me! THE READ MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Drop it in the tex override folder

Usually the mods from these nexus sites dont have readme's. I have no idea why, but that's the norm. It comes across like people who post pictures here of games with no label saying what game it is. They just do it so you will ask.

Any fix for framerate drops down to 15 FPS at certain points (Bridge Hellkite spitting fire, certain views in Blighttown, resting at Bonfires, looking at Hydra from Grass Crest Shield side)? I have SMAA and SSAO maxed through DSFix, DOF lower than vertical resolution and am rendering at 1366 x 768. Forcing Vsync and triple buffering through D3D. Lowering SMAA/FXAA and SSAO had no effect. Specs are 8GB RAM, GTX 660M graphics card, i5 3210m processor. I get solid 28-30FPS otherwise. Physics aren't an issue either. I can roll into a bunch of pots or look at 5+ dead bodies with no FPS loss.

thanks

are you using the fps unlock? PLease do if not!

Unlock the FPS.

Unlocking the FPS gave me tearing last time I tried but I'll give it another shot, thanks.
You need to either use D3Doverrider or run in borderless windowsed fullscreen mode if you want to have vsync with an unlocked framerate. (You can also "unlock" the framerate and limit it to 30 FPS to only get rid of the dips to 15)

Well shit, I just bought the game at half off on Steam. I assume this works on that version too? Would I even get anything out of it on a Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16Ghz with a HD4870 card (that seems to be minimum or recommended)?

Set it to borderless fullscreen with unlocked framerate/30FPS limit and fixed the tearing issue but it seems the game is now running in a lower resolution. Could just be my eyes but things look a bit fuzzier. Just me?

Windowed mode can't supersample i think.
So you'll get your native res only.

Played around with it a bit more and forcing Vsync in the Nvidia control panel eliminated tearing when playing with an unlocked framerate. The frame drops aren't nearly as bad now. Getting 20FPS at absolute worst for the hellkite's fire and 27FPS for resting at bonfires and certain views toward the Darkroot hydra. Definitely better than the 15FPS I was getting for those previously. Turning AA and SSAO off from max didn't make much of an improvement, maybe 1 or 2 frames. I'd like to know if there was a way to eliminate the drops completely (hardware issue?) but this is still a huge improvement. Didn't get a chance to test Blighttown again but I'll do that pretty soon.

I'm getting overscan when the game switches to 720p on my tv. I can barely see the games for windows live popups at all. How can I fix this?

Edit: Haven't installed the dsfix yet, I'm getting some framerate drops even now without going to super resolutions.

I don't see why you wouldn't unlock the FPS anyways, even if you still limit it to 30 fps. It will prevent those low fps drops.

If you have it unlocked at 60 all you need to do is hit the toggle for sliding down ladders and making certain jumps. It's simple.

Does anyone get a lot of banding in this game? It's especially visible in the sky and in very dark places (e.g. Darkroot garden). It looks pretty bad. I'm using DSfix 2.1, I think.

I'm pretty sure windowed mode supports downsampling. That's what the presentWidth/Height settings is for I think.
Exactly. I'm using windowed fullscreen all the time, and that's why I implemented the presentWidth/Height stuff.

That's normal. I was trying to fix it once, but couldn't get it to work (and even if I did, the performance impact probably wouldn't be worth it).

I wont unlock the FPS untill it's safe sliding down ladders. I love sliding ladders.
Damn haha. You will play in awful 30fps for dozens of hours just for that total of maybe 2 minutes combined of sliding down ladders? Just do what I did and tap Backspace before and after sliding down a long ladder to cap it momentarily.

Just picked this up last night.

DSfix is simply amazing OP. :bow

Running a gtx680 and rendering at 2560x1440 with a 1080 dof pyramid. Everything else in the .ini maxed out. FPS running close enough to 60 to make me a happy guy.

Only problem is boss names aren't showing up now, and something I get weird borders all across the screen after a reload after a death. They go away pretty quick, actually wondering if it's the windows on my desktop being outlined....

So any fix on the boss names?

Also, I plan on playing this game with a guide 100% the way through. I appreciate the hard core, but I don't have time to discover everything and I want to suck all the wonderful content out of the game. So which is the best guide? I'm happy to use a FAQ on my Nexus 7 or go buy a physical book, whichever will give me the most detailed walkthrough.

My friend is having some issues, some HUD elements are extremely blurry with him.

Someone knows what the issue can be?

What kind of guide are you looking for? Where and how to find the best items? Boss tactics etc or a total walkthrough guide?

he probably set his depth of field resoultion to be the same as his internal display ersolution. Make sure it is lower than it

Textures are muddy overall. Did he set some settings on his driver to be really low?

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/11349437/DSfix.ini

These are the settings he has been using now, if it matters. But the depth of field resolution appears to be correct. Might be driver settings, but I don't know which one it could be. He is also trying to use other mods that have to do with textures (button prompts and font textures) but turning them off and on seems to have no effect.

Having a pretty great time so far! This game is awesome!

Have to run AA on low for it to be a somewhat stable 30 FPS, but meh, small price to pay for the high resolution! And some AA is better than none.

Does the issue also happen with enableHUDMod set to 0?

Yes, that it what it was on those screenshots. The ini I have posted has some changes from there. He also tried setting the renderWidth en height to his normal resolution 1080P and the display width/height to 0.

EDIT: He is now trying by turning depth of field off, which also does not work.

EDIT2: He has two graphics cards in Crossfire, which I forgot, and is now turning that off.

EDIT3: Without crossfire also no success.

EDIT4: Oh, he still has it without DSFix enabled. That changes things.

EDIT5: I did found the same issue by a steam user, apparently it is only since the most recent Dark Souls update. http://steamcommunity.com/app/211420/discussions/0/846940249161890378/

and here in a comment too:

Oh, that issue might be different.

Just downloaded the game last nigt and am pumped about replaying it on PC at awesome graphical fidelity.... but....

As someone who is completely terrified of changing numbers in text files that affect my computer, what is a good general guideline of how to set certian things? Keep in mind, I'm enough of an idiot that all I really know is "Higher numbers are better" when it comes to choosing resolution of my monitors. What's the theory behind choosing numbers for certain settings? For instance:

1) How do you know which renderWidth or renderHeignt to choose? Should it just be the maximum resolution that your monitor / TV can do? (Which I assume is the number you get when you right click the desktop and go to "Screen Resolution" [in Win 7])
2) What about the display width/height? Why would you need to downscale if you can output at your monitor's maximum resolution in the first place?
3)What is the difference between "SMAA" and "FXAA"? Disclaimer: I understand what AA is already :)
4) What is Ambient Occlusion, and why does it have two seperate varialbles (strength, and scale)? [Types of AO are explained in the text file. Thanks for that!] If all of the strength settings have the same performace impact, why would you choose anything other then "3 = high"?
5) What exactly is "Dept of Field"? I see it references a "DoF Pyramid", does that mean it's draw distance from the "camera" outward in a pyramid shape?

If this has already been discussed to death, can someone point me towards the posts? I realize answers to this will be like a book report, so I'm sorry.

Also, A buddy and I ran into a problem yesterday: We couldn't get the co-op summon to work. There were plenty of times when I saw his summon sign (and vice versa), but we kept continually getting "Summoning Failed", no matter how many times we opened ports, had one person quit to the main menu, or just completely reset the game. Any advice?

Oh, also, last question: Is there a quick list of mods anywhere? I tried google searching during the Fiesta Bowl last night but couldn't find a list anywhere. I heard there was one that erased the splash screens at game start.... is that true? Restarting the game 10+ times last night trying to get the co-op to work made the splash screens really, really annoying.

If your computer's up to the task, rendering above your monitor's native/max res and then downscaling to it helps reduce jaggies. Think of it as another way to get an anti-aliasing effect.

The depth of field effect is the "camera focus" effect which makes things that are really far from the camera look more blurry. The guide in the ini should give some good settings to shoot for, and you'll want to keep the effect for atmospheric and performance reasons.

Welcome to Dark Souls's matchmaking code. Get used to it. It took me nearly 45 minutes to summon my brother once, and we're on the same network in the same house. :(

I'd just ask questions in the two OT's in the community forum. You can't do everything with one playthrough/character anyway

1) How do you know which renderWidth or renderHeignt to choose? Should it just be the maximum resolution that your monitor / TV can do? (Which I assume is the number you get when you right click the desktop and go to "Screen Resolution" [in Win 7])

To make it simpler, just keep in mind that modern PC monitors usually have 1920x1080. Just multiply those numbers.
- If your PC is great enough, multiply 1920x1080 by 2, so 3840x2160.
- If not that great, maybe multiply by 1.5.

Bigger multiplier needs faster PC.

2) What about the display width/height? Why would you need to downscale if you can output at your monitor's maximum resolution in the first place?
Downscaling produces clearer image quality.

3)What is the difference between "SMAA" and "FXAA"? Disclaimer: I understand what AA is already :)
FXAA is basically faster but blurrier AA.

4) What is Ambient Occlusion, and why does it have two seperate varialbles (strength, and scale)? [Types of AO are explained in the text file. Thanks for that!]
It attempts to simulate a more realistic way of how lighting works in real life. You usually notice it around edges and corners.

5) What exactly is "Dept of Field"? I see it references a "DoF Pyramid", does that mean it's draw distance from the "camera" outward in a pyramid shape?
It gives the illusion of depth by blurring out distant objects. This is why disabling DoF makes things look sharper, but more intensive.

The splash screen thing is on DSfix. It's the disable intro opton.

As for other mods:
http://darksouls.nexusmods.com/mods/top/

I personally only take the ones that customize the font, buttons and the stat icons.

Also, I think it was mentioned that restarting isn't necessary to get co-op to match. You just have to place a new sign every certain seconds or so.
