Depends on what you're going for.
Vitality and
Endurance are needed for all builds. Always raise them. Vitality means more HP, Endurance means a lot more of everything (raises stamina which means you run more, roll more, soak more damage through the shield, you can swing your weapon more times, equip heavier stuff).
An optional next step, especially if you're fresh to the game, would be to up your
Strenght to 16 and your
Dexterity to 14. Why? Weapons have stats requirements, and having those two stats at those values allows you to use a lot of the weapons available throughout the game, and even a lot of the higher requirements ones if you 2hand them -- and all this helps with keeping your options open until you figure out what weapon & moveset you like best. Once you find a weapon you like more then all others, commit to it. Learn
all its moves, keep it
upgraded as much as possible at any given moment. And, unless you go for the Normal path of upgrade, there is no need to up Strength and Dexterity beyond the minimal requirements for using it. So, you can use the souls you gain to upgrade your weapons & equipment, or uplevel some other stat/s.
If you're a magic guy, then
Intelligence or
Faith (depending on the type of spells you want to use), and
Attunement (governs the number of magic slots; the higher it is, the more spells you can equip).
So, if you're going for melee -- Vit, End, Str and/or Dex. If you're going for magic, Vit, End, Int/Fai, and Att & Str/Dex to the minimum you need. But about the magic build, I would say I don't have the experience to fully recommend much. I think there's quite a few guys around here who have magic builds, so maybe someone can chime in and help here
Pyromancy doesn't require any kind of stat. The damage it deals is directly related with how upgraded the Pyro Flame (the pyromancer's glove) is. You upgrade it using souls. I always recommend having a Pyro Flame on the off hand, with a Combustion or a Great Combustion equipped -- doesn't cost you anything, and you get a quickly triggered high damage close quarters burst of flames which could come in handy quite a few times as you advance through the world. Not to speak of all the Fireballs spells, which are also helpful in a few situations. And there are other helpful ones as well, but that's already committing to a Pyromancer's path.
Hope this helps!
