I think with SteamOS we're going to see Windows gaming handhelds go the way of the dodo.
These rumoured Xbox handhelds have flop written all over them.
The battery differences are insane. It's wild how power hungry Windows 11 is on these PC handhelds compared to SteamOS.

Edit: Perf is notably better as well in some games.

No shit Sherlock.Windows Was The Problem All Along.
Windows not being able to sleep has been a meme on computers and laptops since 1993. MS probably can never fix it because the Windows NT kernel is just so ancient and was never designed to do it
Meanwhile I close the lid of my MacBook, it sleeps. I open it, it wakes. Never any issues with it randomly turning on or draining the battery or getting hotter than the Sun while sleeping like every Windows laptop ever

Time to go all in on Linux?

I would if not for the nvidia driver performance situation.
But if things stay the same and AMD GPUs continue to make the strides that they are currently making then I'll simply switch over to AMD when the next generation of cards drop and say goodbye to windows in the process.
Microsoft had years to sort this out for their gaming customers, but just their luck, as soon as they prepare to transition their Xbox customers over to windows Valve start making a big push with Linux. Interesting times ahead.
I'd rather poke my own eye out than suffer "gaming" on a MacBook or ipad.Windows is fine for desktops.
For laptops and tablets it's just awful though.
MacBook and iPad every time.
Interesting to see his thoughts on the first official third party device with SteamOS after testing the Windows version a while ago.
This will literally never happen because MS will never officially allow dual-booting Windows with a competing OSIn my honest humble opinion all PC gaming handheld devices should have a dual boot option right out of the box and hopefully with the release of Steam OS for other handhelds this is the beginning of a new trend.
I think more people would be interested in these handhelds if they had an easy "Switch" interface.

I was hating on steam os but these are impressive numbers. Is there a way to get official steam os on rog ally z1e?
Also I was thinking can you run this on a desktop? Probably would need an amd cpu and gpu but would be interesting seeing if there is a performance increase on desktop using steam os.
From what I could find, drivers don't cause that level of battery difference. The MSI Claw devices run Intel, and they don't seem to have much better battery life than AMD devices when running Windows.Question. Is it sure it is due to Windows and not the drivers? SteamOS uses Mesa drivers which have always been way ahead of the proprietary AMD drivers in Windows.
If you use Bazzite, the learning curve is about as straightforward as it gets. Its so damn easy to use.I do hope that these Xbox branded consoles have good OS on them. While I enjoy SteamOS I'd like there's still a steep learning curve for Linux and getting games and launchers outside Steam to run on my Steam Deck.
Windows right now on handhelds just looks like a horrible experience and performance pretty bad.
I might have look and a tinker about with it. Have a SSD to upgrade to so may try that in the process. Cheers. If you use Bazzite, the learning curve is about as straightforward as it gets. Its so damn easy to use.
