Dave2D on Legion Go S: Windows Was The Problem All Along.

Ms needs to either fix windows or create an Xbox app that boots from steam and admit defeat.

These numbers are crazy. Battery life alone will make these devices sell 10 x more with steam.

This is why we need competition, because if MS have a couple of braincells to rub together they will have a team of n9nja fixing this shit ASAP.

Wait til people discover how shit gaming on Windows desktops are compared with Linux and OSX.
Windows is a jack of all trades. If you want to run a program or game, it will work on Windows.

Having owned a Steam Deck, Proton is excellent but still flawed. Linux will only ever be viable for enthusiasts, although Steam OS is the clear choice for handhelds.

Really tempted to get this handheld to replace the Steam Deck OLED just for that extra juice. This will be 599€ most likely, and I think Lenovo is crazy with -10% discount. I can probably get 300-350€ for Steam Deck OLED...

I just installed the official SteamOS on my ROG Ally X and literally got everything up and running in 15 minutes. On Windows 11 this will take me a couple of hours.

Yeah, it's not using full bandwidth but it's WAY better than on Windows for me because I can't use HDR there due to some conflict between AMD cards and Samsung TVs on Game Mode... Freesync Premium Pro gets enabled when using VRR thus not allowing normal HDR to get enabled, thus not letting me use HDR at all unless I disable VRR from the Radeon panel, I didn't even know HDR gaming was so amazing until I installed Linux last month, I wish there was a way to install same drivers on Windows tbh, even if it's not 444... This is a 6700 XT btw.
For me, its a race to see what happens first. AMD Mesa (the Linux open source drivers) getting HDMI 2.1 or nvidia getting acceptable performance on Linux.

nvidia on Linux seemed like a hopeless endeavor a year ago, but they have made great strides.

Don't know about the FPS boost, but the battery thing is because Windows have no idea how to adjust the TDP accordingly to a 2D game vs a high demanding game. When playing a 2D game Windows will just assume you are using a desktop PC and ignore everything that has to do with power consumption. SteamOS on my ROG Ally doesn't even have TDP controls yet, but it doesn't really matter. When playing a 2D game my Ally instantly adjusted itself to only 10W total TDP which is the right amount, while Windows could blast it to 20-30W. Even with all the extra wattage, the performance is still better on SteamOS. It's fucking embarrassing by Microsoft.

Really? I went back to Bazzite on my Rog Ally X for now. Installation was a pain. Basic thumb drive wouldn't do it. Had to move to a faster drive. Post-install, controls were not working correctly and it kept freezing. I'll try again after it has a few updates.

Glad it was better for you though.

They had released a new update in the beta ring when I woke up today. Controllers are now working, and I haven't noticed any freezing. 9-10W total TDP when testing a Disney 2D on Steam without having TDP controls avaliable. It's easier and faster to install the official SteamOS vs Bazzite in my opinion, but I haven't had any USB issues. I own a Steam Deck as well, so I don't mind experimenting on my ROG Ally X.

The controllers were off/on working for me so that may have been the problem rather than freezing. The USB issue was only for installation really. If the drive wasn't fast enough then it would take hours to complete. I had that same issue trying to install SteamOS on my PC so it wasn't really hardware related.

Good to know that have updates in the pipeline. I'll give it a month or so and try again.

Legion Go S with Z1E chip will be noticeable more powerful. The Z2 Go is barely more powerful. But yeah, for the price the Steam Deck OLED might be the better choice.

Yeah...good point. Z2 Go isn't really worth it compared to Steam Deck OLED unless you get it on a steep sale and just really want an 8" screen. Unfortunately, Z1 Extreme Go S is really hard to find right now.

If Steam OS ever hits desktop with full drivers support Windows will hang on the deals with the companies. Not that that's a problem for them because they seem to have great sales people, even the IT companies where I've worked pay them for Windows and Office 365.

It's too expensive as well. Might as well go for the ROG Ally X a much bigger battery.

I use a docking station with a Samsung USB-C drive, and I did everything in 10-15 minutes

Well Windows was never made with handheld gaming in mind, SteamOS is built upon being a leading gamingOS. If Valve didnt have Steam Deck as hardware then maybe Steam OS wouldn't be where it is today, as it is most certainly made also with handheld gaming in mind.

Right now it is on sale at Best Buy for $599 which is still too much. The regular asking price of $729 is just insanity.

Edit: Oh...the Go S on sale is the Windows version. Steam version is $599 regularly, but only has 16GB ram. Lenovo really overcomplicated this.

I use a docking station with a Samsung USB-C drive, and I did everything in 10-15 minutes

I used a Sandisk drive at first. Moved to an SSD with USB adapter and then it went really quick.

I was sure this was going to be a backfire thread with people shouting how Windows is the best and SteamOS can't run games. Surprised the charts are keeping that at bay.

SteamOS is incredible, compared to Windows. I wasn't expecting the 20% performance gains, but knew the battery life was improved.

Not accurate. Linux wasn't made with handheld gaming in mind either. This isn't some new gaming OS. It is Arch Linux with optimizations and a toolset/UI within the Steam app designed specifically for handhelds.

Clearly Legion Go S in specs. Steam Deck OLED is cheaper and has a better display.
And better control scheme if you want to play older PC games with iffy or no controller support. Steam Input plus the touchpad make it fairly easy to play those older games.

it would also enrage all the Arch Linux bros because of the flood of new "casuals". Which I am all for, lmao.
Meh. The casuals will have no idea that they're running a distro based off Arch. They'll pester the Steam forums at worst.

(oh BTW, I run Arch - I must mention this, I think it's in the EULA)

Because Windows 11 is slow to install, and then you have Windows updates, GPU updates, launcher updates, and so on.
It install very fast here, Windows updates are automatic, Nvidia app and driver is 2 minutes to install, launchers too while on Linux it's a "pain" to install everyone of them, except Steam, because they don't have native versions, and Xbox app doesn't even work.
