He talks about the internet in this interview from 2000, he was so right: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0-51IkWpFE

Went to three shops to try and get the Blackstar record on vinyl, all sold out :/ Hopefully they'll do another pressing soon so I won't have to overpay for it

It's really amazing how he's made such a spectacle of his own death. What with the secret fight against cancer and his album release just days ago.

Truly an amazing artist and performer. I suppose today could be considered his final performance.

Even in death he's given even more to the world of music.

RIP Mr. Bowie.

Goddammit, I can't believe it.

I don't think it's sunk in completely yet. David Bowie had a huge influence on my musical taste and its development. I consumed everything Bowie - watched Man Who Fell to Earth when I was way too young, went through each of his albums and marveled at the incredible variety.

There is no replacing him. He was a genius, and he will be remembered for decades to come.

Thank you, Mr. Bowie.

Sounds like there may be a street party down in Brixton (the part of London Bowie was from) tonight featuring his music / celebrating the Duke. Think I'll go.

Marilyn Manson: "David Bowie Changed My Life Forever"

My first introduction to David Bowie, was watching "Ashes to Ashes" on MTV. I was confused and captivated.

But it wasn't until my first real stay in Los Angeles, around 1997, that someone told me to take a moment to listen to something other than Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Hunky Dory. So I went for a dizzying car ride through the Hollywood Hills and listened to "Diamond Dogs."

All of my nostalgia, instantly turned to awe. I was hearing him sing about fiction as a mask to show his naked soul. This changed my life forever.

Every song of his was a way for me to communicate to others. It was a sedative. An arousal. A love letter I could never have written.

It has become and remains a soundtrack to a movie he painted with his voice and guitar.

He sang, "Hope, it's a cheap thing."

I don't need hope to know that he has found his way to the place that equals his untouchable, chameleon-genius beauty. The black star in space, that only HE belongs.

This crushing moment of fear and loss can only be treated the way his music has affected everyone who was fortunate enough to hear and love it.

Let's NEVER let go of what he gave us.

Marilyn Manson

EDIT: I may as well include Manson's cover of Golden Years

I was shocked when I woke up and read that. It's sad news, because he was an icon, and a class act.

May you Rest in Peace sir Bowie.

I'm not a fan per se, but I really like a few of his songs, including Major Tom and I'm Afraid of Americans.

Major Tom, a fictional creation of Bowie, discovers a black star. It should be noted that the character is a representation of Bowie himself so we can draw parallels with this video to reality. When Tom's bedazzled skull is discovered, the woman takes it and essentially starts worshiping it. He becomes an idol. However, the video is intercut with Bowie blindfolded with false eyes and holding what looks like a Satantic bible. David Bowie, the pop star is a figure the occult (hidden) because of his genius but he is just as blind as anyone else. He becomes a misinformed Jesus of sorts for the masses, as represented by the three scarecrows (it closely resembles Jesus' crucifixion)

When death does find Bowie/Major Tom/ Jesus scarecrow he realises the futility of existence. At the center of the universe lies a black star. This represents many things; a black star is a fallen star, a dead star. Here Bowie is acknowledging his inevitable demise as an artist and as a person. That in the end he will be nothing but a black star. However, his legacy will live on. This is seen when the skull is being worshiped.

Blackstar is essentially a meditation of death and the emptiness of being an idol. It's pretty nihilistic and very bleak. What I got from it is that humans find ways to find joy within the abject apathy of this universe. It's artists like David Bowie, though flawed, provide us with such joy. His legacy will always be remembered.

From a youtube comment on Blackstar video, it makes perfect sense.

I just ordered it on amazon.com - should ship in 2 weeks... I have a feeling that vinyl is going to be one of the most sought after in a long time

Damn, trying to find the Blackstar vinyl from Barnes and Noble and all sold out. :( and prices are like hundreds of dollars on eBay.
I went to buy it friday, but didn't because I could buy a few different things for the same price. When I heard about his death today I went straight to Amazon. Glad I got it when it was in stock.

I'm incredibly sad by his death, but I love seeing how his music touched so many people's lives.

Pretty much counting down the hours until I'm off work today.

I just wanna go home and break out all of his records and listen to them and drink and cry.

Really astounded how much this is getting to me.....I've never gotten this emotional over an artists death.

Really awful news I just don't want to deal with right now. Ziggy Stardust was my first Bowie. That album made me appreciate Bowie, but Hunky Dory made me fall in love with him. The Berlin Trilogy and Scary Monsters solidified that love in my DNA as something that would last throughout my life. This news is pretty damn devastating.

Under Pressure is my favourite Queen song and it's because of the dual vocals of Bowie and Freddie Mercury, however, listening to the isolated track voice of Bowie is definitely something, just found this today so maybe I'm very, very late to the party, but it's great.

You are not alone, I'm wrecked as well, pretty sure a lot of people around the world is as well because of his passing as well. We are allowed to cry today :(

It is simultaneously my favorite Queen and David Bowie track. It is a great tragedy that Mercury and Bowie never got to perform this track live together.

So sad to wake up to this. Being a huge fan of classic rock, David Bowie's passing hit me hard. It's a huge loss to lose such a great man and musician. It just feels so strange, since I had no idea about his fight with cancer, and he just released Blackstar.

Despite that, it's great seeing everyone come together to share their memories of Bowie. I've seen musicians of all stripes recount the time they shared with the man, or how he was an inspiration to them.

Funnily enough, my first experience with him was from his magnificent cameo in Zoolander, and then later seeing him in The Prestige. I then started hearing his music because my parents always listened to the classic rock stations. I remember my first song I listened to of his being "China Girl". Then, I started hearing songs like "Modern Love", "Ziggy Stardust", and "The Man Who Sold The World", and fell in love with his music. When I started getting into Queen in high school, I was able to recognize his voice on "Under Pressure". Hearing the news just hit so hard.

Rest In Piece, David Jones. May you and your music live on forever in the stars.

I've been crying since I woke up an hour ago. Such a big part of my childhood, and so terribly influential.

Welp, the marketing ploy worked I guess. Bought Blackstar.

R.I.P.

Nile Rodgers talking about David:

This bit is interesting:

The last time I heard from Bowie was a few years ago. I have a charity called the We Are Family Foundation, and after our 10-year anniversary [in 2011], the board decided they would honor me for my charitable work. They tried to figure out who would be the most appropriate person to give me that award, so they called David. At the time, he was sick; we could tell. So he did a film for me, and it was the sweetest, nicest, coolest thing ever. I’ve never to shown it to anyone outside of that room because it feels braggadocios – it’s a film of him praising me. But it shows what kind of human he was. It was so loving. He was somewhat struggling to speak; you could tell he was ill. It had been reported that he had had a heart attack, so he would’ve just been recovering. It was just him showing me lots of love. And it meant so much.

So it seems like David had had at least one other heart attack after his one in 2004 and apparently had another 6(!) whilst fighting cancer.

Jeez.
