Nobody in a scary costume answering the doorbell chases kids, makes them cry and films it. Even dumber is it's a daycare centre and a 5 person coordinated effort.

Isn't that what halloween basically is - I mean people dress up themselves and their kids as monsters? Honest question, I know nothing about halloween in the US and I want to learn more about this.

Hard to do that when both parents have to work to pay bills. This isn't the days where the mom can stay home with the kids and dad worked. I'm lucky that my wife works 2nd shift or we would be fucked. This is something a fucking boomer would say or someone who wasn't raised in a middle class family.

Halloween is lame. 99.9% of people dressed up arent putting on scary costumes, acting scary, or recording themselves chasing 2 year olds on video. Kids ring your doorbell wearing their cheap superhero or home made costume and the homeowner gives them candy. Most people at home giving out the treats arent even dressed up. The kids walking around the neighbourhood are. The person at home is watching TV or finishing up dinner waiting for kids to show up.

Daycare centres are definitely not a Halloween kind of place where the supervisors are chasing kids around freaking them out.

They're literally just trying to do seasonal holiday activities with the kids. They don't touch them. They're doing super light, super minimal Halloween prank shit. This is someone that's putting extra effort into trying to interact and engage with the kids. Someone who doesn't care would just ignore them. I'm pretty sure the kids are going to recover without permanent damage.

Context matters. We're talking about very young children here, some barely two years old.. They are in a phase of their life where they're still building a ruleset of how the world works, and if you screw it up there's a real chance it may lead to depression, anxiety, or anger later. Coincidentally my eight year old son put on a Halloween demon outfit in front of his toddler brother today, and the toddler was fine with it. But that's because we took care to do it within the limits of what we know he can handle. That's how you do it. If you want tough kids (well, when it comes to two-year olds it's mostly only things like f.ex. not running to comfort them if they lightly stumble and fall without hurting themselves) prepare them, train them often, always have a safe place they can retreat to, and then raise the ceiling ever so slightly every time. Then you can prank them as much as you want without hurting them. But that's not what these people in the daycare center did. They disregarded every common sense rule in the book. They should not work with children for the rest of their lives, they have no idea what they are doing.

But when it involves a daycare centre and other people's kids in a coordinated effort by the staff to freak out toddlers it takes on a totally different context.

It's not really any different than punishing kids. If a parent wants to cuss and spank their kids, go ahead. It's tolerated within reason. But if a teacher or babysitter did the same to kids it's totally different.

No they should lose their license. Their responsibility is to take care of these children, watch over them, help them grow and learn, and to keep them safe. These are fucking toddlers. Scaring them like this can mentally damage them. This isn't something that would stay contained with the daycare. The children would probably have trouble sleeping after this, and then the parents have to be up at night dealing with it. A mistake is one thing, but this goes beyond a simple mistake. There are some things that are just common fucking sense. If you have a bunch of little toddlers screaming and crying for their lives, and it doesn't register in your dumb brain that what you're doing is traumatizing them, then there's something fundamentally wrong with you, and you shouldn't be taking care of other people's kids. Who knows what other mistakes they could make.

There’s a big difference between scaring a kid and terrorizing a toddler. The latter is equivalent to emotionally abusing an animal, which can lead to long term issues.

If your income is under a certain amount some daycare's offer scholarships (which they use as a tax write off). This place most likely relies on tax write offs to off set the the loss they receive for low attendance or low enrollment cost.

Yourself included? I would just go talk to the teachers and principal of the center to figure out what happened and what steps are being taken to prevent it in the future. Calling the police and drawling for blood whenever anything happens is an unhealthy cultural phenomenon.

My sister 3 years my elder slept on a pad in my room for 6 months after she was shown The Exorcist 1 and 3 at a Girl Scout sleepover when she was 11. That was after my parents finally told her no more sleeping in their room.

I'm not trying to push an anti-US argument here, just a possible observation, why does it seem "bad" replies here about day care appear to be US based? In Australia day care is pretty common practice, it's actually a pretty great social/communal thing. We put our kids (when younger) in 2 days a week each, so they had the best of at home and day care socialisation. Both kids still have friends to this day from kinda/kinder (kindergarten nickname we Aussies use for day care). My wife still drops in to say hi to two staff ladies from my son/daughter's kinda years later.

Unless of course the staff collectively tries to traumatize them. This was a tremendously stupid stunt and really can cause lasting damage and paranoia in young children. I would imagine like everything in America daycare is A. Private B. Unregulated because 'Government will not tell me what to do!', thus shitty standards.

In France some daycares are public, but even private have very strict regulation and training. The government also subsidizes daycare depending on your revenue.

Where I live at least one year daycare is obligatory before school. It's important for the children's social skills. Even households with one parent at home put their kids into daycare.

Apart from that it's simply not possible to feed a family with only one income. And me and my husband have both good jobs.

In italy was pretty common to be physical for the teachers when i was a child (and before that it was even worse if what old people say is true), but parents were all ok with that, nobody ever said anything, different mentality back in the days and kids were stronger.
My teacher was probably a reminiscence of when my parents were kids and all teachers were like that.

Now that i'm a grown up i can see the problem, but absurd as it can sound, it was not a big deal when i was a kid, my parents were already pretty physical so it was just more of the same, i still never did my fucking homeworks once

Wow I didn't know Italian schools were so violent. In the US when I was a kid in the 80s that wouldn't have happened. I went to private schools and the worst we got were ruler to the wrist for disobedience. If I got in trouble at school I got in trouble at home. But I was never abused.
