Days Gone 2 is looking more likely than ever: 'We want to explore many, many different avenues'

Chris Reese spoke to GR+'s own Alex Avard after Days Gone won The Golden Joystick's PlayStation Game of the Year for 2019, and Reese said that getting this recognition was a great encouragement to keep going with the Days Gone universe.

"Oh yeah, it is certainly a passion of ours, and that's what we've always wanted to do," Reese said. "This is a world that we want to keep breathing more life into, and explore many, many different avenues. So who knows, we'll see!"

A resume update from a Bend Studio employee indicates that the team has recently entered pre-production on a new game. There's no official word on what this game will be, but given the positive response to the first Days Gone and Reese's comments after receiving the award, a sequel seems quite likely.

Interesting news.
I see Days Gone being the Assassin's Creed 1 or Uncharted 1 of the series.
The sequel could be a great game if the devs really iterate upon it.

I missed the first one due to open world overdose, it came out when I was into rD2 and ACO, and reviews seemed to paint it as a generic open world, might grab in a sale eventually though

honestly i think the game would have been better if it was chapter based. the open world doesnt really add anything to the game IMO, instead i just found myself racing to the next mission.

Did they fail? The game is a commercial success and besides woke critics the general user loved the game.
Even people who loved the game agree that there is plenty of room for improvement. It may not be a failure (far from it), but there are a lot of things that will have to be improved on in the next iteration.

Of course theres always room for improvement, but the person I quoted was implying something else. It very much succeeded.

This is 1,000% how I see it too! I'll play it at some point, but right now there's just too many open world games that I'm playing (RDR2 and now Death Stranding).

As expected, a Days Gone sequel on PS5 hardware should be absolutely bonkers......4k 60fps open world game with crazy physics and thousands of freakers, bring it onnnnnn…....

The first game was surprisingly good, just take some time to polish the damn thing. Also releasing it on the PS5 should allow for some proper huge zombie hordes. :)

I try to limit myself to one big open world game a year to avoid fatigue, and as such I really loved Day's Gone. The atmosphere, creativity in combat and approach to a world swarming with Zombies was more often than not a total blast. The underlying story and characters had some real depth to them, and it's a world I'd happily return to again.

It had flaws, sure, but it's a game with good bones and a lot of potential, and I'm delighted to hear it's going to get a chance to build on that.

I never got round to playing the game myself, glad to hear that you enjoyed it, will have to give it a try when there is a sale on the playstation store.

The could use Decima Engine for the sequel. Anyway, I can't wait for the next game.
IMO they should create their engine by themself. Most of first party Sony already have their exclusive engine.

Bend is as big as the others? I actually didn't consider this possibility, but I think it is a great idea if they can pull it somehow.

Don't need to be a engine from the ground.
Imagine an engine like Dunia. Is an engine based on Cryengine 3, but still a new engine. They could pick UE as a based for a new engine. They can hire people who actually help to forge new engines.

Days Gone 2: Damn It, O'Brian!

(for those confused, it never stops making me smile hearing Deacon show frustration when O'Brian would dodge his questions or have him do something difficult or such. Deacon's VA was pretty good but not excellent IMHO, but his delivery of those frustrated moments were always perfect)

But yeah, a sequel would be welcome. Hopefully they can make the game's story kick off a little sooner this time, in the first game I wasn't really into Deacon's story until he headed to Iron Mike's camp where it really picked up.

This is exactly how I saw it. For a developer that hasn't done anything nearly this ambitious they did a great job. There were many parts to the game I found meh and could use improvement but in the end it felt like a good template to build upon. Overall I enjoyed myself.

Day 1. One of my favorite new IPs this generation. I do hope they use Decima engine as oh MAN Death Stranding looks amazing, but what ever the team is ok with, I'm ok with.

I've got Day's Gone at home, but i'm having an open world fatigue at present. From what i've played, Day's Gone isn't a bad game.

A sequel always seemed like a sure thing to me, based on how well the game sold. I'm glad. It was one of the few games I enjoyed this year -- and I actually didn't expect to enjoy it. Ended up playing it through twice.

It’s sure going to be interesting on how we take on a thousand+ sized horde.

Maybe get some super powers like O’Brian

I want a massive increase in bike upgrades in the sequel. Running out of upgrades in the last area well before the game ended was a bit of a bummer. Perhaps have optional upgrades that are good for certain things, but can hamper your vehicle in some way much like Mad Max (getting max armor in that game meant a very heavy car that accelerated poorly) which you could offset a bit with some other upgrade. That way people can tweak the bike for their style of play.

They should go wild and introduce trike choppers. You could have additional guns installed on both sides. :)

I hated running out of gas and having to walk a thousand miles to town, only to be killed by yogi bear.

I liked the game. Just couldn’t bring myself to finish it.

Tbh it was an issue only at the beginning of the game. Once you've upgraded your gas tank it's stopped being an inconvenience at all. I liked this mechanic, made you focus more on scavenging, finding gas station and planning ahead.

I know a lot of people didn't enjoy it and it got average reviews but i personally thoroughly enjoyed it and would welcome a sequel with some improvements.

Not for me.

Just letting an horde following you and then breaks in an enemy camp and watching hundreds of freakers destroying everything is one of the best experience i had in an open world game this gen.

Fucking hell, why can't more people be like you sir.

It's the mindless automaton fanboiz I can't stand.

Just accept the game has enormous flaws, but you enjoyed it regardless. Lose the persecution complex for your precious Sony exclusives.

Is anyone calling the game perfect in this topic?
