DayZ just hit a new all time high concurrent player count

Doesn't really surprise me, the game is in an excellent state and is still receiving regular updates from the devs.
It feels fresh even after thousands of hours and the non forgiving nature makes every life feel like something special. Nothing in gaming comes close to the adrenaline rush of a DayZ firefight. It also looks and runs great these days, the new graphics engine did wonders. This game does not age.

I'm constantly perplexed that the AAA industry has yet to look at games like DayZ and not build on that formula. A 10 year old game that feels like it's from 2033.
Same here, thought about this a lot.

Hoping the Factions game will be a persistent world with servers just like this one, with a more casual focus, could be so good.

Also hyped for State of Decay 3, and hell, even that smoke game that looked so good in trailers but seems like it'll end up being a scam, can't remember the name now.

Dayz is so good, and the modders helped a lot too, this will be an unpopular opinion in a forum like this one, but the situations in that game can't be matched by any offline game since AI in videogames hasn't evolved at all in the last 20 years.

Sadly some systems like driving aren't that good since after all it wasn't created by an AAA studio, and many vehicles are made by mods.

A polished Dayz would be a dream, maybe with Dayz 2 which got "announced" on the ABK trial recently.

Wow!
I bought this when it was still in early access for 20$ i think
It was fun but with a lot of bugs
I think i will check this again

Same, played a decent amount in Early Access but gave up eventually. 2023 DayZ is a different beast. Not perfect and still janky in a lot of ways (zombies...) but an excellent experience if you are willing to learn the mechanics.

Yeah it's crazy that DayZ still has no real competition. No AAA equivalent in sight.

The AAA industry knows how to remake games, and pump out safe sequels.

They’re not into anything complex. That’s Nintendo and indie territory.

I haven't played it in so long. I'm pretty sure I was active back on the GAF thread when it was just a Mod for Arma 2. What a great concept and I'm glad to see it's still alive and kicking.

Maybe one day when I have a few days and some drinks with some buddies. Such a cool game to play and socialize in. One of my best buddies on GAF I met on DayZ just by happenstance.

I genuinely think Naughty Dog making a polished, AAA version of DayZ is about as safe as it gets. Hell, I assumed this is what they were doing back in 2020 when they announced the delay of Factions II.

Is it free to play?

No but it also lacks any season pass/cosmetics bullshit. It does not have a store. The only thing you can buy is the Livonia map which is also excellent.
Of course there are also amazing free maps (like Namalsk) and the game is very mod friendly.

I downloaded this and it was shit. I felt like I was walking round a game from 2004 with massive flat land and prefabs. Why is it popular?

I can see why a first impression of the game can be very negative. It does not hold your hands and does not even have a tutorial. Then you get sick and don't understand why and die to zombies. In fact the very first thing you should learn is how to block and punch out zombies.

It's popular because it is the ultimate open world game.

Thanks. Just checked the steam store and it's $60 AUD! Does it go on sale often? Might wait and see if it does. I remember playing the original Arma mod and thought it was alright though very janky.

You can pick it up for a bit cheaper on a key store. Cdkeys works well:

Yeah it does go on sale regularly. There still is some jank but the shooting/weapons and basic mechanics are top notch.

I don't play DayZ much anymore but Arma series is my all time favourite FPS.
I'm happy that DayZ is doing well as it's funding Arma 4 development without hogging a ton of resources.

If there would be only Arma 3 then they'd be more pushed to rush with the new game.

Did they ever add proper good controller support? I own it on Steam but haven't played in like half a decade, probably more.

Gay porn is where it's at.
No other survival simulator even comes remotely close to what DayZ is doing.
This game is in a league of it's own in the genre.
Imagine playing for 3 hours straight, doing nothing but running, looking for water, looking for food, you find a weapon, now you gotta find the specific ammo for it, you get sick because it's raining and you don't have warm clothes, now you gotta find specific medicine or you'll die. Finally after 5 hours, you're somewhat geared up, you start building a base so you can hide your shit, suddenly you hear footsteps, it's another player,
when you encounter another player here, it's scarier than the scariest game out there. Your 6 hours progress will be wiped out within a second.
People who play dayZ and actually enjoy it are a fucking masochists. But simply there is nothing out there like it

I have no idea why anybody would want to do that to themselves, but true enough, I can't think of anything else quite like it.

It was all so thrilling when it first came out too.

I remember some of us GAF got a private Mumble to have voice comms because Discord wasn't a thing then and the Teamspeak that we were using was being ghosted by people using it to hunt us.

Yesterday I started a new life and met a fresh spawn. We started talking and were both starved for food. I had killed a chicken but was missing a knife to prepare it. Dude had a screwdriver which did the job. Shortly after he had to leave but told me of a small stash he had made close to Nidek military base. After getting side tracked for a while I finally made it to the stash and actually found it. At that point I heard shots within the military base. After approaching carefully I was able to gun down the remaining player with my new mp5 SMG. Two more corpses nearby to loot. Huge payoff, very memorable journey. It's the journey that counts in DayZ. If you play long enough you will experience things that you probably won't forget for the rest of your life. It is that intense.

The adrenaline/tension this game can create in player is just unlike anything else out there. At least that's what I remember from it the most, eventhough I haven't played in years.

lmao remember when they pretended the standalone was ready for release and charged people money for it and then it was completely broken dog shit and none of what they were promising theyd be adding was getting done and then the creator just dipped from the company with the money and they had to remove zombies from the zombie game for ages

guess they've come a way since then but my god what a scam to begin with

It launched in early access. Anyone who bought it knew what they were buying. This "scam" word is getting overused by morons.

One of the best games that currently exist. Nothing else like it. They've kept supporting the game this whole time and it has continued to pay off. It's like the WoW of the survival genre at this point.

I just wish firefights felt better on console. Also impossible to get my friends into it as they'll need to spend days/weeks learning the ropes before being able to consistently meet up.

I remember I played it when it was a mod for Arma II, I was so mindblown by the concept that wanted to try. It worked like shit on my pc and was junky as hell, but I still remember how much fun I had playing this and the random encounters with other players.

Wow. Remember playing the mod. Bought the stand alone game and put in an hour or two. Good job on the devs. Will have to reinatall.

Holy Shit!

Can't belive this game is THIS alive.

Crazy to remember the origin of this game.

This is certainly a reflection point to compare the industry of the Arma DayZ mod to DayZ standalone to now.

Cool to see this game doing so well. I’m also in the camp of playing the mod and thinking it was a great idea but so janky, then the standalone was a mess and I forgot about it.

Why in the fuck would people willingly choose to do this?!? That entire scenario sounds like the most unfun, annoying waste of time imaginable.

It's on Playstation? Do many people play on there or would I be wasting my time?

There are official and community servers. Each server is labeled full, nearly full, etc. Not sure what the max player count is on PS, but you won't have a problem finding a server that's at least moderately full at any given time. I've never really tried any of the community servers, but there seems to be some relatively popular servers.

My issue is more so with the controls. They're clunky AF. When you swap between ADS there is popin or something that is super distracting. Leaning while aiming is a massive chore I think. The controller options are next to non existent, outside of maybe aim sensitivity and if you're lucky dead zone. Inventory management isn't the worst, but there must be a better way to do it.

Games with actual stakes provide a very different vibe, especially when you encounter another player who may be just as scared of you as you are of them. Do you shoot on sight? Will they? Who knows! Adrenaline will kick in because you have everything to lose. Same for them. It’s the kind of rush that folks seek out in real life situations, such as those who enjoy free climbing mountains. The difference of course is, with free climbing, you will actually die if you fuck up. In DayZ, you lose however many hours you put into that character.

The journey itself is the point, not the destination.

I get it.

It's not for me, like....at all, but I get it. I've got a buddy who's obsessed with this game and he tried to get my wife and I into it. We played with him for two hours and we both agreed we just absolutely hated it. He was getting frustrated with us because we kept just fucking around and giggling while he was trying to survive.

I think I just don't take things seriously enough to get into games like this.

Yeah, it’s definitely for folks seeking the total immersive experience.

Personally, I prefer something more like the Dark Zone in The Division. Dying means you don‘t get to keep the loot you obtained in there, but you still retain your character and you can always come back and fight to reclaim or move on with your life.

The easiest way for people to understand this game is it's really not about shooting people, it's kinda like starwars galaxies. It's the weird social aspects of this game that the people who play it seem to enjoy, kinda like gta5 rp servers to a degree I guess.

People want these game. Even though The Day Before is a scam, it's still the most wishlisted game on Steam.

The best experience is had when you play with friends. So you get all the benefits of the tension and adrenaline but also lessen the chances of losing your gear/base if you die.
I remember the adrenaline I got everytime I went to look for weapons in military bases, back when I played the mod. It was like nothing else on the market.
