Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps alluded to the greater Rebirth mystery this week and had some great Kyle stuff.

Spoilers:

Ganthet and Sayd think that Kyle channeling the white light through Walker will resurrect the Blue Lantern Corps. During the process Walker starts yelling at an unseen individual to get out, and the resurrection fails and actually kills a large swath of vegetation on Mogo. Ganthet and Sayd can't believe it failed, and the implication is Doc Manhattan blocked it.

The White Ring is drained of its energy and starts to split apart, but before it does we see glimpses of Atrocitus, Barry (with the Blue Lantern logo emanating from him) and Oz.

The ring splits into seven different rings, with a new one for each Corps. The Green ring goes to Kyle and he's back rocking his 90s black and white uniform.

Before all this goes down Hal tells Kyle that he (Kyle) is the greatest Lantern of all time

ComiXology has a sale on DC Rebirth books to celebrate the anniversary of its 2016 announcement/reveal. There are only a handful of the Rebirth titles discounted and of those titles, only the first six odd issues.

Getting caught up on Rebirth stuff! Deathstroke is gr8. Superman is gr8. Batman is excellent. Thought Detective got a little weak with the Victim Syndicate arc, but it's back to form now. Blue Beetle is basically perfect now, by my measure. Still not sure about making the scarab magical, but I don't mind it so bad.

Also, everyone should check and see if their library has Hoopla, because they made a whole bunch of volume 2's available recently on there!

Sadly no Red Hood :/

I just got mine yesterday and plan to drive right in.

Volume 1 of Red Hood isn't even out yet. It'll be on Hoopla May 2nd.

That's good to hear, I dropped it after the first issue but now I might jump back in for the next arc, I always liked Jaime.

Deathstroke and Wonder Woman are still my favorite cape comics right now but I was a little bit disappointed with the latest developments in Superman. Just a bunch of continuity bullshit. And I liked the status quo of Superman not being Clark anymore. Super Sons has been pretty dope though.

Super Sons is a lot of fun, but less so than I was hoping, I guess? Gonna stick with it for a while, see how it develops.

So. Justice League of America. This is intentionally hammy right ? Its so narmy at times but it does it in a way that sort of works. I still miss having a dramatic/serious Justice League book that doesn't suck though.

I mean, it's a JL team featuring Lobo, of all people. Ham is implied.

Besides, someday, Hitch will get taken off JL.

Someday...

But for now he sells. Fortunately, we are gonna be getting a 2-issue break from him.

3 issues, no? New Wonder Woman writer doing an issue and then an issue each by Abnett and DeFalco, right?

Picked up Flash vol 1 and 2 along with Superman vol 1 and 2 during the Barnes and Noble sale. My first D.C. Comics ever!

Also happened to buy Batman Vol 1.

Can anyone explain why the TPB do not have every single issue in them? Would it be worth picking up the single issues not put into the TPB?

When TPBs skip an issue it's because the issue is unrelated to the TPB arc (might be a 1 shot (usually only as filler if theres a delay for some reason) or more likely its part of a crossover or an event time in and will be published in that TPB)

Still waiting for that JSA series to be annouced. Stop teasing me DC.

Legion of Superheroes also too. I'm guessing mid 2018 atm, no way will those launch without some kind of proper lead in. Looks like the 2nd wave this year will be the Dark Matter books from Dark Nights: Metal. Unless they launch after Doomsday Clock for early 2018.

Thank you, that makes sense and was what I guessed.

I heard there is a lot of crossover between Batman and Flash. So I will have to pick up that TPB

So I've been reading Superman and really enjoying that, but that's the only one I've been really consistent with. Read the starts of Wonder Woman and Detective Comics, but sort of fell off despite enjoying them.

What are other ones that are largely agreed to be the must reads?

Green Arrow has been great, solid writing and a kick wss artist rotation.

People seem to mostly stick to their own stuff (I generally only read the Bat stuff and tied in team books for example).

But generally speaking Deathstroke has gotten a lot of praise (I've veered in and and out but what I've read is excellent). New Super-Man is good too IMO.

Red Hood and the Outlaws is a major turn around from its New 52 dreadfulness and worth checking out for that if nothing else. Tec is usually considered to be good and probably the best Batman book at the moment.

Batman and All-Star Batman are doing well but apparently just carrying on that general trend (Batman tends to sell well) no one has claimed they are heaps better than Pre-Rebirth or anything. .

Hitch's Justice League is generally agreed to be one of the worst books at the moment. The other contender is Harley Quinn, but having read the first few issues of it, Harley Quinn knows what its doing and does it well enough, it's just not doing something that I want to read about , which is more than I can say for Justice League, which feels like its trying to be Morrison but without any of the myth building that makes it work. You always knew why whatever the Justice League was up against was significant with Morrison and why the Justice League was formidable, Hitch seems to be trying to copy that style but misses out on the build up , so it's just weirdly incomprehensible.

I'm way behind on GA; how would you say it compares to Percy's work in Teen Titans?

I read the two most recent issues of that today and was pretty resoundingly unimpressed. Dude just doesn't seem to have a good grasp of panel-to-panel writing, even if his plot and thematic work is good.

I'm not all the way up to date, but volume 2 was really good. Political as hell but not in a bad way y'know? And GREAT characters.

Political is always good when the writing is on point. I should definitely return to reading that.

My backlog is getting pretty ugly though. Thank god Marvel has been fucking up as of late. I has made it much easier to catch up.

I remember hearing good things on GA but never got around to reading anything of it.

If I read any other Bat books, it would probably be Tec or Nightwing if that one is turning out well. Sort of want to take a break from Batman for a little while for whatever reason.

Thought I'd heard good things on Deathstroke, but to hear Red Hood is a bit of a surprise. I only read a few issues of the original run, but good on them if they managed a turn around.

Shame about Justice League.

Curious but did the new Titans or Aquaman books turn out well? I saw that Abnett was on both and I have good memories from his Marvel Cosmic stuff with Lanning.

*Deathstroke - I really enjoy this book because it's just different from most of the comic book's you read. The writer really puts you in Slade's mind, and man, there is a lot of appearances by other DC Characters.

*Detective Comics - Like you said, you enjoyed it. Plot varies from excellent to good, amazing art, and features arcs with multiple members of the Bat family.

*Batman - Now, this book has fairly mixed reactions on GAF. But I recommend picking up the last issue, it's a oneshot issue guest starring Swamp Thing dubbed "The Brave & The Mold" - pretty interesting issue I though.

*Batman & The Shadow - A 6 issue miniseries, written by Snyder (of Batman/American Vampires/etc. fame) and Steve Orlando (wrote the excellent the Midnight series). Only 2 issues are out but so far it's very solid.

*Nightwing - Fun book, good art. Nightwing moves to Bludhaven and misadventures begin. Damian makes an appearance.

*Green Lantern - All of the Green Lantern books have been solid.

*Red Hood & the Outlaws - Wow, this book has been very good so far. I'm really surprised. Red Hood teams up with Artemis (an Amazon) and Bizzaro.

*Justice League of America - I've been enjoying this so far, Batman creates his own Justice League featuring Vixen, the Ray, the Atom, Killer Frost, Lobo, etc. It's been a fun book with great art.

Thanks!

I feel like both books are enjoyable but not great. A lot of Abnett's Aquaman run has been revisiting stories that Johns started. If you liked those, it may be worth checking out. The book is getting a fresh start on issue 25 with Stjepan Sejic taking over the art. Check it out:

Not reading Aquaman so can't comment.

Titans is average I guess ? Its not like Justice League where I cancelled my subscription , but I haven't been majorly impressed either. I think it's biggest weakness is that it's pacing seems agonizingly slow, which is always a danger with Team books with big teams.

It would probably significantly benefit from being bimonthly even if it was in the Wonder Woman launch mould where the off issues are something different, like smaller stories focusing on particular team members or something, even that would let you shift some of the team dynamics out of the main book and help the pace.

Especially since unlike Justice League , the Titans generally can't carry their own books*, so you have to establish the characters as individuals too.

* Nightwing seems to be able too , but the others (apart from Wally) have never been able to manage much more than a maxiseries.

I dunno if Wally could hold down a series at the moment , since Barry is also the Flash and so much of the stuff that defined Wally is Manhattaned at the moment.

Thanks!

Can't speak to Aquaman, but Titans has turned out VERY well, imo. Book's just a lot of fun.

I will say the Lazarus Contract issue excellent. That's probably the single most impressive thing Rebirth has done, the Crossover events are good. You don't get random character shifts and the pacing and integration are on point.

I haven't read Aquaman, and have only read the last few issue of Titans but so far I'm enjoying it.

That one certainly sounds intriguing given the focus character, though I admit most of my knowledge of Deathstroke comes from his appearances in the various animated forms he's taken.

Yeah the cast was a big appeal since we got to see Stephanie and Cassie again and I liked the first arc.

I'll keep it in mind. That's certainly an interesting team-up.

Wait, like "The Shadow Knows" Shadow? Snyder tends to be reliable though I admit my favorite of his Batman work was The Black Mirror with Dickbats.

Good to hear. I liked Grayson so knowing it's from some of the same people was encouraging.

I admit, I'm not up to date with what's going on with GL right now. I sort of lost track after Blackest Night, though I know some things here and there.

That's certainly an interesting group of people to have gathered. Even better if it's had such a turnaround.

I'm liking this seeming trend of more unique teams with either heroes not seen as often or some I believe tended to be villains.

I feel like both books are enjoyable but not great. A lot of Abnett's Aquaman run has been revisiting stories that Johns started. If you liked those, it may be worth checking out. The book is getting a fresh start on issue 25 with Stjepan Sejic taking over the art. Check it out:

That's a bit of a shame, but I'm not opposed to seeing continuations of Johns' arcs. Oh, it Abnett leaving then? That's some really nice art!

We crossing over with Ciri from Witcher 3?

I think that's Dolphin? Wait, did Arthur and Mara break up? I really liked that relationship if that ended up happening.

Seems different takes, but I at least haven't heard anyone say it's bad so that's certainly a plus.

Justice League of America and Justice League are different titles.

Justice League of America is an odd book and I haven't decided what I think of it yet. Its sort of campy and hammy but I don't find it bad. Do you want to see Batman use a Captain America expies shield ? Or the Justice League in armor made out of solid light ? Then this is the book for you.

Does Deathstroke get better after the first 6 issues? I've always enjoyed Priest but maybe Deathstroke is not for me. I see the general praise but I think I simply hate the character. But I'm willing to keep going if it picks up.

Nope. First arc sets the tone. And Slade is a pretty awful person. He's the worst bits of Batman turned up to the point he works as a foe for an entire Super Team. You can feel bad for him at times, because he's not a complete monster like some and has some degree of self awareness, but he brings pretty much all his problems on himself.

I bailed on Teen Titans as soon as Jonboy Meyers did, I ain't buying a Khoi Pham drawn book. Could be he doesn't have a good handle on writing team books or just a bad editor on TT.

Yep, it's still my favorite Rebirth book and the one I look forward to reading the most. Simon is still a bit underdeveloped, but Jessica is the best.

1700+ DC books are included in Barnes and Noble's Buy 2 Get 1 Free sale, running through June 12.

I will be stocking up on Preacher.

Ooh very nice. I ended up passing on the Rebirth deal when I saw that they were putting out deluxe editions for the series I was mainly interested in that collects the first two trades. There's a few I'd been meaning to get for ages though like All-Star Superman and Secret Identity that I'll likely pick up.

Their deals do stack with coupon codes, so I will wait a couple of days and see if any coupons pop up

Really? I felt that Night of the Monster Men was thought to be pretty blah. Same with, the Lazarus Contract minus the Deathstroke issue. They are certainly set up better, but the stories they tell have been mediocre at best.

Also Deathstroke, Supermaan, Nightwing, Red Hood & the Outlaws, Green Arrow, and both Green Lanterns are still going very well for me. I would've laughed at someone if they said I'd be praising a Lobdell book last year.

YEP!

I wasn't really familiar with the Shadow when I went into this book, but the book is set in the perspective of Batman trying to solve a crime he thinks the Shadow is part of. So he goes into detective mode, researches the mythos of the Shadow, who he is, etc.

The pacing and artwork of the book is on point. Definitely check it out whenever you get a chance.

Riley Rossmo's Batman art is so good. He did some superb issues in the Monster Men miniseries too. I'd love it if DC put him on a monthly book. I really dig his style.

I'm comparing to the NU52 / DCYOU era for reference. Characterisation not randomly changing across issues and the narrative not being confused about when things happen relative to each other shouldn't win points but it has to.

They aren't seminal works or anything.
