DDR with Mario impressions

At the risk of compromising my maturity, I bought DDR with Mario last night.
The shop had a sign outside saying "Only 1 copy left! Hurry!" but when I got in they'd actually got two copies left, and that's all they'd ordered apparently, as they didn't expect the game to sell much.

Anyway, I got it home, hooked it up and played for a bit.
The mat feels a bit thicker and softer than standard DDR issue, but that might just be my bad memory. There's warnings everywhere telling you to make sure the room is lit properly when you play, don't clown around on the mat, and that kind of thing. They coddle you a bit too much, I think, since kids will be kids regardless of what the game says.

On to the game... Waluigi has nicked the song spheres and is making everyone in the world dance (what a loss in productivity!) so Mario has to get them back. You do this by dancing, of course. I'm still on the first stage, and so far all the dancing has just been left and right, to get you into the swing of things. In between dance-offs, there's some minigames. First one was like whack-a-mole, using the 4 directions of the ddr pad to whack kuripos that appear from their holes. This is fast and furious, so maybe a pro DDRer would be better than me. I missed most of them once it built up speed :) Second bit of non-standard DDR activity, you have to jump at the flag, like the old Mario games when you finish a stage. You alternate left and right as fast as possible to build up speed, then hit up to jump, like track & field. Quite fun.

The music has been good so far. In between stages when it's telling the story, it's typical mario RPG stuff, but in the dance acts so far I've had a dance version of the Mario theme and a dance version of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, both of which were good, and preferable to the usual DDR Euro stuff (no offence to DDR fans intended).

I expect the dance moves to heat up a bit, but so far it's interesting, at least, to a beginner DDR player. Will post more as I continue to play.

The Japanese love DDR.

Not so much these days. The original game and the first couple of followup mixes sold very well, but sales have taken a dive in the years that've followed. There hasn't even been a new arcade mix since December of 2002, and the recent console releases have been lame "greatest hits" repackagings.

Mario + DDR = Japanese Love Child

I have both game and pad in my closet :)

Yea, all I see is Beatmania IIx Super Deluxe Mega Orgasmix, I haven't seen a legit DDR machine in ages here in Japan. :( One of my coworkers needs her fix and is freaking out cos she just can't find one anywhere.

Okay, that sounds awesome.

Sold when it comes to the States, if I can find a PS2/GC adapter for my current DDR pad.

Same here I have a red octane pad, I need the ps2/GC adapter, I cant go back to the stock pad. :)

Anyone know if they even exist?

Thanks, Jonny. Looking forward to more impressions; hopefully the steps get harder.

So, is the main mode like a Story mode where you don't choose what songs you play? What about just choosing songs on a songwheel as with regular DDR games?

Yup, I've got a PS2->GC adapter. Found it at EB, way back when.

My only beef with Mario DDR was that, at least during E3, the entire thing was a rather simple affair. Much like Donkey Konga, it felt dumbed down/simplified for a younger audience, even on the harder difficulty settings. Oh well.

I've got a Track & Field pad laying around that I use as a door stop.

If anybody wants it, PM me.

My friends and I busted out track and field last year and had so much fun it was unbelievable. We were drunk at the time, but still, it was fun as shit.

Shit... I might be picking up DDR with Mario after all :(

the soundtrack is ace

the game is way too fucking easy

i should not be AA'ing song's on the hardest difficulty (i'm not that good) (also, there is no AAA....huh?)

and where the fuck are the freeze arrows? where are the sudden stops? WHERE IS THE DIFFICULTY

it's also way too fucking bizzare seeing the mario characters dance around. even bowser. YES BOWSER. he get's funky

i was hoping maybe some of the song's you unlock get a bit harder, but so far, no dice.

i feel like i'm playing a dumbed down 5th mix

I'm just getting into DDR today (Playstation flavors), and I suck horrendously. I imagine Mario Mix is slated to hit the US at some point, perhaps I'll still suck when that day comes! :)

that's what I felt at E3...
even after walking all day and feeling constant pain all over my body, I was able to ace the hardest songs.

Easy is what I'm looking for, I've got two left feet and found it difficult to enjoy the other Dance Dance Revolutions because of how hard they are.

It's coming in October, I believe.

I don't mind if it's easy... People complained about Donkey Konga being too easy, but I greatly preferred it to Taiko. I have a hard time completing some of the DDR songs on the PS2 versions, so it will be good to feel a sense of accomplishment for once. :)

i saw a symbol that looked like workout mode, but didnt bother clicking on it.

the thing with difficulty and the other DDR's is that you can always put it on beginner/easy if you suck that bad at it, but this one doesnt give any real option toward the high end. now granted, my skill maxes out around 7/8 feet, but i'd still like to feel like MAYBE i'd fail a song every once in awhile.

oh, and the gamecube controller blows for ddr. (i'm too drunk to be stomping around in my apartment right now)

dual shock is actually pretty good for it.

either xbox controller pretty much blows also (because of how the buttons are raised)

but really, alot of playing with a controller will just give you better practice reading arrows.

I'm dissapointed to hear it's easy. Not that I can pass most Heavy stages on DDR, but I mean if it got as difficult as heavy, that would be at least something to work toward.

So what are we talking, does it get standard tough? Or just light?

I've never been very good at DDR. Hearing that it's easy doesn't really make me happy though. I'm more willing to get better than just breeze my way through the game with my lack of skill. I'll still pick this up though.

Yeah, it's pretty easy, but that's what has kept me with the game so for. The game does an excellent job for DDR newbies, more so than any DDR before it. It makes the whole thing fun again and not just for toe tapping experts.

And on the fun note, the Mario additions are awesome. When the game is set on the standard or harder modes, instead of just arrows you get interactive Mario characters you have to step on. Turtles will take two steps (one to put them in their shell and the other to send them on their way) Goombas go down easy, Cheep Cheeps wiil actually jump up and change arrow directions on you, and best of all - the boss fights. Durign the boss songs the whole stage becomes interactive; a huge Blooper will not onyl be throwing little Bloops to confuse you but also one if his huge limbs will pop up every so often to throw a little confusion in on the mix. There's also a ice boss where Mario has to step on fire balls to melt him - otherwise his absorb the entire screen.

The mini games are also a blast, and again scream accesabilty more than anything else. The track and field like events are fun, there's even full on platforming levels (well at least you just jump and duck - simple stuff really). The two that's been the biggest hits with everyone are the whack a goomba and dodge snowball games.

Again, DDR vets will whine toll the end of time about the difficulty of the game, but may find the core changes (boss events and the Mario flava...oh yes, I went there) refreshing. The language barrier isn't that bad, but I'd probably hold out for the US version, seeing that I believe it will retail for $49.99.

after spending another hour and a half with the game this morning, i'd say it maxes out around 8 feet.

though turning on the gimmick mode does make things more difficult, as you're so damn used to arrows and all the sudden you've got goomba's, koopa troopas and bullet bills being thrown at you.

also, playing the story mode on hard/EX is much better, plus you can buy more song's in the shops.

i'm enjoying it a bit more than i did last night, even though the grading is so lenient (havent scored below a B yet)

I just want to give my annual salute to atomsk's avatar:

HUZZAH!

I'm looking to sell my copy of this game. Apologies for resurrecting this thread to do so, but I figure some GAFer wants it and is not keeping tabs on the buy/sell thread.

Game and dance pad are 100% mint and complete. I haven't used it much because I have to rearrange the whole living room to make room for the dance mat. Asking $40. Ships from California. PM offers please.
