Dead or Alive 4 new screens

Hmm... did I miss the part where I singled you out or did you miss the part where I said "majority"?

I never said it was wrong to criticise it or give opinions about how it could be improved but based on the "opinions" in just about every DOA thread in general (fyi this counts from previous games as well) my statement isn't far from the truth.

I've defended this game far too often, I think it looks really good myself, being one of the only next gen games with a HI DEF resolution trailer showing a product that is running as well as it is on the alpha dev kit. Can I say complaints about the games appearance are entirely unwarrented ? no , if you want to look only at the character models and ignore absolutly everything else then I could almost agree with the complaints. Team ninja has taken an engine that was fine tuned with DOA ultimate and ported it to 360 , they have done a by the book launch title transition, the current doa 4 engine likely pushes 3 or 4 times the polygons , has textures that are twice the resolution , video thats running at 1280X720 instead of 640X480, an actual cloth and hair physics engine as opposed to the very basica stuff they had in doa2/3/ultimate. The engine certainly has room to grow, and I'm positive that a couple more special effects will be turned on with final development kits that'll have the lot of you naysayers shutting your yaps.

It just annoys me that people look at the hires video and screens and claim the game isnt' next gen looking. Last time I checked there isnt' a single game available right now with visuals this good, not even on PC. If you wanted to get really anal I suppose the PC version of doom 3 with special effects cranked up , but even that comparisn is a bit iffy.

The best thing in this thread was the framebuffer grab of DOA3 on xbox compared to a doa4 shot for 360. There's a definete leap going on there, maybe not a gears of war style image but it's still a big leap.

What I don't get is this...

DOA 2 was released in 98 in the arcades I believe.

DOA 4 still uses the same models and same gameplay. Seriously, the only thing they added to the models is a bit more definition and better textures and what not, but with they are basically the same god damned models, which is truly pathetic that they keep reusing the same old thing for every character model.

How can you people not see this?

WTF are you on? You can say the samestupid shit about any 3D fighter with lineage. VF4 models are just Vf3 models with more definition. T5 models are just T3 models with more definition. Good lord.....

I have a hard time believing "plastic skin" is intentionally part of the art style. I call bullshit on that. Seems more like an inability to texture skin properly.

Meh. If GoW has many characters on screen each one still looks twice as detailed as any of the DOA4 characters then something is wrong.

If you think the characters in God of War (including Kratos) look as detailed as these chararacter models it might be time to head to the optometrist.

I think he means Gears of War which has also become known as GoW here.

Do you seriously think that a couple blemish textures are somehow beyond Team Ninja's grasp? give me a fucking break. these are ANIME characters.

Anime characters that are noticably better in the cg cut scenes, which was very noticable in the E3 DoA4 trailer because it contained both cg and realtime footage. If they looked anywhere close to the way they do in those scenes I don't think many would complain. It would have almost been better if they didn't mix in that cg

At first glance DoA4 looks pretty similar to DoA:Ultimate, which sucks since fighting games saw a huge leap in quality from last gen (Tekken 3 -> Tekken Tag/5, DoA1 - DoA2/3) that was obvious right away

Ah, gotcha. Faith in Sly's eyesight restored! I think most people are disappointed with DOA4 because it's coming from Team Ninja, the squad that arguably got more out of the Xbox than any other developer. I think we can all agree that's not the case with the Xbox 360 so far.

Does every game now have to be fucking realistic looking?!? If the characters next gen dont look photorealstic with sweat dripping from the pores is it considered shitty looking?! Just like a painting or drawing doesnt have to look like photograph, games dont have to look like live action movies. Shit if the The incredibles were released as a game with the same visuals as the movie i bet most of you would bitch because Mr. Incredible has short legs. If every game has to look like gears of war or resident evil 4, next gen will suck sweaty balls!

If the lighting was good, it would look much more like the CG (if not the same), and everyone would be fapping like mad to the pics. All IMO. ;) PEACE.

Better lighting/shadowing will make a lot of difference in the final product, but I disagree with posts which suggest that a) the TN style doesn't abide by detailed skin textures, etc, and b) there isn't a lot of room for that style to grow with better technology:

The kind of lighting inporvements you want can be done all in code, instead of adding with assets. Maybe they will be adding them now that they have recieved the Beta kit. Who knows?

Let's not freak out like it's October already.

Now while I aggree that a better lighting/shadow model is all DOA4 really needs to shut up most of the haters, I have some issues with these examples you give.

as far as the cloth texture in the NG CG, take a close look at those DOA4 pics again--the HIGH RES ones. They're starting to approach that much detail. That being said, this is quite dissonant from the look of the game itself, straying from the anime look to a more realistic CG look. It looks better, to be sure, but does it fit DOA, or Ninja Gaiden, a noticabely darker game?

As far as this pic

, you do realize the only difference between the DOA4 pic and the Village girl from Ninja gaiden is a layer of foundation and a little blush, right? hell, she looks far more like a 'china doll' than kokoro does . . . :)

Am I the only one that knows that Team Ninja out sources their CG movies to Korean animation studios?

OMGWTF they d0nt do their own CG animations!

Thanks for giving me back my eyes :lol Yes I did mean Gears of War which just looks superb.

It's not just the cloth detail, it's also the hair, eye, and skin detail (although the jpg compression may wash it out). My point is that their art style can evolve to include more detail, while not losing its distinctive character; it's not valid to suggest that it can't do justice to more powerful technology.

The eyes, makeup, hair, etc are far more detailed. Again my point is that even the "China doll" style can be improved with improved technology.
