Always told myself that RE4 was so good that Dead Space can't touch it, but after the remake of both games, i personally don't believe RE4 is anywhere near as good as Dead Space. Dead Space has superior gunplay, enemies design, atmosphere, level design, story, sound design, etc. I can't even think of something that RE4 does better than DS. And i mention RE4 because it's my personal fav, and most likely the favorite of most, so if DS is better than it, i can safely say that DS is better than any RE title for me.

I believe that if the whole game of RE4 was on par with the Village section, RE4 would've been a superior title for sure, but the game has a massive downgrade in the level design after the village, and later levels that has zombies with guns is the kind of dumbass goofiness i don't want to see in a RE title.

What do y'all think?

It seems like you are basing this solely on the original RE 4 and not the entire franchise.

Edit: You are also not touching on two other factors that Capcom absolutely nails really well in nearly every game, especially RE:

  • New game plus
  • Other modes/unlockable modes (Raid mode, Mercenaries, Secondary character like Separate Ways, etc.)

When it comes to moment to moment combat and boss fight ABSOLUTELY NOT and I fucking love Dead Space, it cant touch Resident Evil series when to gameplay.

The best game in the franchise is RE4 (again, talking about myself here, so personal opinion), and Dead Space is better than it. The only other game in the RE franchise that is as good as the good section of RE4 is the police station part in RE2/RE2R.

Resident Evil 4 for its time was a classic but not so much anymore. I honestly never really got into any Res Evil game and 4 was the one I played the most.

I played through Dead Space and thought it was really good at first but it becomes a slog to play imo. I find it to be a very mediocre title all in all. The first 30 mins of Dead Space is the next 10 hours of Dead Space.

Depends what you like.

If you like horror, then it has to be dead space.

If you like cheesy action horror, then it's RE.

I prefer more actual horror, so dead space gets my vote.

Didn't want the whole board roasting him lmao.

well i actually don't have much interest in resident evil series. i only ever played resident evil 4 remake. but i played all dead space games (didn't like 2 and 3 that much, 1 is my favorite). also played the remaster or remake or whatever that was

i feel like dead space lacks consistency. resident evil 4 remake was consistently great and had better pacing in my opinion. i remember times where i was really getting bored due to what seems to be same looking place over and over again in dead space. i don't remember having such a feeling in resident evil 4

i also feel like supporting cast is simply better in resident evil while it is lackluster and almost doesn't exist in dead space. this has to count for something

I mean, Dead Space 1 is excellent, so yes, it's better than SOME of the RE games, even the really great ones of that "some" group, but better than all of them?

I don't look at it this way. Level design, atmosphere, gunplay, exploration and enemies disign/variety is all that matters, so whichever offers the best quality, is the superior game.

Dead Space? Nah

Dead Space 2, tho?

I like DS 2 more than RE 4. Its survivor horror + action perfected.

It improved gameplay compared to 1, improved story, pacing, graphics, enemy variety, characters ...

Its a masterpiece. Replayed it last year and it was every bit as good as it was in 2009.

RE4 was the primary inspiration for making dead space in the first place -
I am aware. Inspired, improved and perfected third person combat is what DS did. Look at Perfect Dark, totally inspired by Goldeneye, and trashes goldeneye like nothing. Plenty of other examples like it.

I fully agree with this. I like Dead Space 1, but Dead Space 2 is head and shoulders above it.

As far as RE goes, RE4 is the only game I truly enjoyed out of the lot and event here I would take DS1, not to mention DS2 anytime.

Also, EA are morons for having my such unrealistic expectations for DS1 Remake which lead them to cancelling DS2 Remake. 😡😤😡

Some of the best highs in DS1 and 2 are probably better than a good chunk of RE games, I'll give you that, but how can you say its better than all of the anime wesker and chris fights, boulder punching, roundhouse kicking and suplexing, nemesis chasing games.

RE games made sure to lean into the have fun element of a video game

RE and dead space are great, but i am quite partial to the greatest horror series, silent hill.
Good Silent Hill game beats both RE and Dead Space when comes to pure horror.

The issue is after Silent Hill 3 and the Room we didn't have good Silent Hill game until Silent Hill 2 Remake.

I REALLY hope Silent Hill f finally delivers good original Silent Hill game that not a remake.

Nah, the needlessly Dark level design and over reliance on anti gravity sections hold the Dead Space remake back imho, compared to RE4remake, or most RE Games, apart from RE5 and RE6. Still very great tho, but yeah I completely disagree

Hmm... tough choice. On one hand, RE4 has more memorable characters and a generally more interesting story. But Dead Space has a much darker and scarier atmosphere, it's definitely more focused on horror than RE4.

Both have good gameplay, but I find RE4's gameplay more fun, while Dead Space feels more intense, mostly because of the heavy gore.

I don't know, if I had to pick based on fun, I'd go with RE4. But if we're talking horror and atmosphere, then Dead Space wins.

It's hard to say one is better than the other, since they have very different styles and target audiences.

It's subjective. I LOVE Dead Space, but I also love Resident Evil. For different reasons really, so there doesn't need to be some competition between them IMO.

Target audience is 100% the same. DS team wasn't inspired by RE4 for nothing lol.

Re4 being your favorite "Resident Evil" tells me everything I need to know for your comparison.

Agree but I think RE is the most overrated series in gaming history so I think a lot of things are better including F.E.A.R.

If you're referring to third-person horror fans in general, sure, but the two games are very different. One leans more into action with light horror, while the other focuses on pure horror and suspense. They appeal to pretty different audiences.

And yeah, RE4 inspired them, but they still made a completely different type of horror game. The tone, pacing, and intensity are on a whole other level.

Dead space takes itself more seriously and resident evil is like "b" movie horror. I overall feel deadspace is the better game. Resident evil has zombies and shotguns hard to beat that also.

RE4 certainly leans into action more, but it was still sold under a horror game.
