Deadspin: (Notre Dame football player) Manti Te’o’s Dead Girlfriend is a hoax

Ok, this makes sense, at least in the context of a BS explanation.
Apparently they spent a lot of time together in Hawaii.

Presumably this was because he could say they had actually physically met, yet it would explain why no one outside the family could claim to have met or seen her.

Manti: "To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating."

Who is Manti speaking for, here? The good folks that he hoaxed? Is he an ESPN spokesman now?

Teo's statement

"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.

"To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

"It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.

"I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been.

"In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.

"Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."
That clearly wasn't written by him. Anybody who could have possibly fallen for a hoax like this has to be incapable of stringing two coherent sentences together.

So someone, somewhere spent countless hours, both online and on the phone, pretending to be his girlfriend? And at the same time, he lied to people about having spent time with her in person?

Why would anyone do that?

If this is true, then it means the woman was also messing with his brother, because he said in the video interview that he got a call from his brother notifying him that she had died. This dude needs to lie better.

Apparently they spent a lot of time together in Hawaii.

Presumably this was because he could say they had actually physically met, yet it would explain why no one outside the family could claim to have met or seen her.

But they did claim it, or more to the point Te'o claims they knew her, because he said they notified him of her death.

He got a call from "HER" "brother."

So he's either a scumbag, or to say the very least a complete idiot? The former is infinitely more believable, because no one's that gullible (for lack of a better term)

This story is bonkers. ESPN can't seem to even acknowledge how badly Deadspin scooped them.

My favorite is Mortenson/Shefter has confirmed...

ESPN is ridiculous funny right now. "BREAKING news on Manti Te'o coming in, that his girlfriend did not exist".

Also also they're showing footage of him talking about her. This guy...WOW. He says he talked to her every night so BS on that online only relationship.

"They started out as just friends," Brian Te'o said. "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple.

He's a lying sack of shit.

Actually, in the video he says he got a call from HER (Lennay's) brother, not his own. Meaning he got a phone call from... a male hoaxster as well!

How deep does this conspiracy to defame the honorable Manti Te'o go?!

Haha, SportsCenter's breaking news sidebar says "Manti Te'o's girlfriend did not exist." I just sat down and turned the TV on and I'm still not sure what is going on. What the fuck.

Sportscenter playing video of him talking about talking to her and her physical appearance. What a scumbag.

I just don't get it. Why would he do all of this? Why would he make all this up? I know people will say to gain sympathy, but this seems far too risky.

Somewhere the Ishmael brothers are giggling uncontrollably.

I don't understand this story. He's talked about meeting her before and her being around. He had to be a part of it, it's just weird.

How in the fuck did NOBODY aside from this one guy at Deadspin even THINK to fact check this story? How many reporters/editors not only dropped the ball, but weren't even in the same ROOM as the fucking ball so as to fumble it?

Statement sounds like your typical PR bs.

Kinda funny watching it on ESPN though.

"Manti Te'o's Girlfriend did not exist - More reaction ahead"

There are a good dozen reasons why his explanation doesn't make any sense. His brother claimed they had met in Hawaii multiple times. That would mean the people actually flew someone out to Hawaii just to keep the hoax going (for whatever reason). He also claimed that they spoke each night while she had leukemia, meaning that someone behind the hoax was that committed to keeping him deceived.

Not sure what this has to do with my post. Her fictional brother 'notified' him, yes?
