Dear White People | Official Trailer

Cringeworthy....atleast after watching the trailer. It was like they tried to hard. Not the actors, but the message/script. :/

Really? Because I felt it expressed a great number of different messages and made it look entertaining. And we have no idea (well, those of us who haven't seen the film) what the overall takeaway will be.

I doubt she's meant to be infallible within the context of the movie. I don't think anyone thinks that that's the entire definition of racism.

*cue opportunity for growth and character development*

Also.. has any significant amount of actual critics completely trashed this movie, or can I assume that the 4.1 IMDB rating is because someone made a thread about it on Stormfront?

IMDB boards are lit about this movie:

I don't see how the title could be offensive to anybody. However, I can't help but feel that if a movie had the title Dear Black People - regardless of the style of movie - the black community would throw a fit and be upset.

On a serious note I can't say I liked the trailer. It sounds like college theater actors reciting tumblr posts. Nothing sounds natural in the trailer. Maybe the film is different. Spike Lee's early films had natural dialogue that flowed, even when it was being heavy handed.

It actually really reminds me of Spike Lee's 'School Daze' where it had this half serious drama half weird dreamy atmosphere thing going on.

Why are they making films instead of addressing the problem of violence in the black community?

A lot of racial issues these days. That yoga article a while back, all of these racist videos popping up (many of which don't even end up on GAF) and then you have the videos involving cops. It's really invigorated the racial discussion in America because it's all there for us to watch. But it's also distracting us from the fact that by and large we treat each other far worse than others do.

One problem at a time I guess.

Truth hurts.

I usually hate stuff like this. When I see things similar to it, as a black guy, I feel like they are spending too much time worrying about this type of thing instead of their own life but this actually looks like it has the appropriate blend of entertainment with something people, at least myself, can relate to.

It's fairly obvious that the movie is preaching about understanding between two (or more) groups, not so much "white people just don't understand". The white guy questioning her line of the thinking at the end of the trailer pretty much spills the plot.

Due to the movie's titling though, I'm sure it will be discarded by most of the people the message is intended to reach.

From the trailer alone, I feel like this is one of those "something to say" films that actually doesn't say much. It's an unrealistic plot, from what I can tell. Even the lighting seems fake.

It won't change any minds or teach people much I don't THINK. It would only be used to validate already held opinions. I'd love to be proven wrong though. I have a feeling that the most important part of this movie will be the preppy black guy. Sounds like there's a nice speech in there from President Palmer that could be important.

I'm mostly hoping it will help dismantle "casual racism", like "you're the whitest black guy I know", etc.

I agree, to an extent, but maybe a direct approach will work better for the masses.

Examples? I've heard a LOT of the lines from the trailer, both in real life and on GAF.

For real, black people don't attend Ivy League schools lol. And no one says that kind of stuff to black people IRL.

The satire plays up personalities to be bigger than they are in real life for the sake of not going over the average moviegoer's head. I dunno, I'm pretty ambivalent about the film, but it's more due to how cheesy it looks than message. On another note, where's my non-black minority satire film, I could go for Mexicans not being portrayed as gangbangers or heavily accented illegals, but that's just me Hollywood.

Was a bit doubtful halfway through the trailer, but then it becomes clear they're doing something a little bit more interesting. Would watch.

The lines sound like they were literally lifted out of a tumblr post. It's like a big budget youtube video. It's kind of hard to gauge how the actual movie is though, because it's pretty much soundbites over stuff happening.
Why are white people so passive aggressive?
They can't say exterminate the mud people in public anymore cause of the pc gestapo.

Well first of all, I wouldn't take things said on GAF too seriously. Look at the first things said in the trailer. It's satire, but what exactly is it lampooning? Are you really racist if you don't have 2 black friends?

Well just like how blacks got tired of waiting for Hollywood and started doing their own films, Hispanic Americans need to do the same; Asian Americans too. Lord knows you guys are going to be waiting quite a long ass time for Hollywood to not stereotype you. Oprah has gone on record a few times stating she would love for Asian American directors to send stuff for her network; I assume that offer extends to Hispanic Americans.

The idea of "this black person I see in one specific context is my friend and therefore I can speak to the opinions of black people at-large"

ex.

"Did you hear about that guy who was killed by the police. Racial profiling is pretty bad."

"Yeah, I dunno, my coworker Joe is black and he doesn't seem to think that was an issue here, I mean our president is black."

Don't agree with that definition of racism she floats. It can't just be about a system of disadvantage. It has to include racially-premised pejorative attitudes in general.

It's a definition used when racism is studied in an academic context. It makes more sense to define it that way when you're studying the systemic effects of racism.

In a non academic context, your definition is more accepted. But it still sounds weird to me when people in a racial majority talk about being victimized by racism.

Why wouldn't I take things said on GAF seriously? GAF may not be representative of the world at large, but that doesn't mean opinions expressed here aren't reflected in the "real world".

As for the "two black friends" line, and her character in general, I think its more of a representation of her frustration with racism than an actual list of rules you have to follow, else be branded a racist.

His "definition" actually applies more to prejudice which is a symptom of racism. BUT that's beyond the scope of this thread about this film

This seems really interesting, but are "Black parties" really a thing at Ivy schools? Yikes.

Yeah the film is sort of inspired by them.

You know she's just a character, right? It's not a documentary.

Trying too hard, LOL Tumblr, the black people in it are unrealistic, every line uttered seems like the gospel truth but it bothers me cuz I don't think it's true... anything else I miss to dismiss the movie?

I think the trailer looks fine. Will watch, preferably in a Manhattan neighborhood where I'm sure lots of white people will be in attendance and laughing nervously at the jokes made about them.

I'm down for this. Early teaser made it seem a bit too preachy, but this trailer gives a good idea of the conflict and so on between the characters. It seems smart.

Dehumanizing lighting.

My point is I don't think you need to have black friends to have an opinion on black people. The opinion should be held up based on its own merit.
