I always love when new Death Grips is posted if only because of the impressions of people listening to them for the first time. Shit never fails to crack me up

Do you even know what polytonic means

It's not even particularly difficult music. Unless you listen to pop music exclusively or something. I don't even like Death Grips that much

Never heard of them before or at least that I can remember and with Bjork being a guest on the entire album, I sat down and listened to the whole thing.... and it was kind of terrible.

It's like some parody shit. I can't wait until they finally confess that this was all an elaborate plan to see how low hipsters will sink.

i think it's the music equivalent of that deadly premonition game

Not sure if posters are trolling with praises or not. This... sounds terrible.

I can't believe anyone would voluntarily listen to this, much less record it. Is this supposed to be music? Is this the world we live in?

are you guys DEAF?

this sounds like disease.

Oh, OK. I guess my tastes are wrong then.

Say what you want about Death Grips. They are a very unconsistent group, and their antics may put off some people. But they are undoubtedly influential. There is a strong case that a lot of the aesthetic for Yeezy's last album came from death grips, and Kanye's work is hugely influential in the pop sphere. Sooner or later the abrasive tones you call noise now might be used by top 40 producers in the future. It's happened before, with Krautrock in the 70's being met with scorn by the british media, yet their innovations with electronics being implemented in the next decade. The same with Afrobeat and World Music in the 80's. IDM and dance music in the 90's. and most recently dubstep and bass music. These were genres that were met with indifference by the mainstream press, before being implemented by the top selling musicians of the day later on.

No it's not noise, if you can't even bring yourself to put a serious critical evaluation on this, then why are you even in this thread? To shit on people who dare have a musical opinion that isn't as enlightened as yours? 'This is just noise' has no critical value what so ever, Zach Hill is one of the greatest drummers in the world right now, and looking into MC Ride's lyrics will show they are more than random shouts. This is abrasive, yes. There is more than one type of fruit in the world, believe it or not, and I know this may blow your mind. People actually like this! real, breathing people, even well scholared music critics, even forward thinking artists like Bjork do! Bjork even let them remix two songs from her last album. Kanye, the king of all great taste, liked their line of thinking that his last album was full of abrasive textures that DG pushed forward. We're not deaf, there is actually people who enjoy this, everyone has different tastes! Isn't it great

So by all means make a drive-by post and claim with you superior music tastes to deem this as inferior. I'm really interested to hear your articulated thoughts about why you are put off by this, why it causes such a negative response. Why you couldn't close the tab and move on with your life.

Yeah, Zach Hill is taking part in a pointless troll that has been going on for years. I bet dude doesn't have anything better to do with his career.

Can't believe people are already pulling the H card. Death Grips isn't even that underground anymore.

Seriously. My mate doesn't even know who Lou Reed was and hates so called 'hipster music', and even he's heard of death grips. The 'hipster' angle is for people with no arguments.

I commented because it was posted on GAF for people to see, I love Bjork's work and I have never heard anything from Death Grips so I was curious. I gave it a fair shot, I listened to about four of the tracks and I found it off putting because it's fucking terrible.

No Problems

because it's fucking terrible.

... and he we go, that's my problem. You've just ignored what everyone else said in this thread saying why this is such a non-argument. You really feel superior to everyone who enjoys it? You really can't even show a tad bit of empathy to figure out why people enjoy it? No, objective statment. We are all wrong.

I listened at like 3am while exhausted and didn't love it. Would put it equal to Plates right now (tms>exm>nldw>gp) but it also seems like it'll be more of a grower than Plates so. Plus the song structures seemed even more intentionally evasive than normal, so even with a hook I found myself a step and a half behind most of the album, which I'm gonna chalk up to tiredness. Lyrically it's weirder than ever, will have to process those more. I do also feel that notm strikes a tone that could become even better when contrasted with the second half of the powers that b.

Dying at popgaf coming in here for bjork and having their delicate top40 ears violated, leading them to insult everyone else and post blingee emojis (the only way 90% of them know how to interpret music) after which they're probably signing back into their @Arianator4Perry twitter account and mass-posting "fist me" on Sam smiths instagram. Go reblog shoddy yonce gifs on tumblr or something, or you could try listening to anything outside your comfort zone (like people have said death grips aren't even that obscure. And honestly aren't massively experimental.) and see if it ends up being rewarding and expanding your one-note white bread and mayo music taste

Pop music is amazing and pop stars are awesome and you all nearly ruin it.

Actually, I haven't challenged anyone else's opinion, nor have I attacked anyone for their taste because your enjoyment of something has no impact on the way I perceive them. I listened to it, I didn't like it and I expressed that sentiment. I don't know why you would expect every comment on this to be positive, especially if you've heard it but I get that you like it for what it is and I'm sorry you feel that way.

Okay, it's fine that we have a difference of opinion and I'm sure that no comment on other peoples taste was intended....

If I came out as confrontational in that, i'm sorry. I'm not even that big of a fan of it. I don't expect every post to be positive. There are plenty of mixed/negative reactions I have no problem with.

But don't you think this post:

are a bit much?

If someone said this in a pop music thread.... well we already know how that turned out.

I don't think it's that bad tbh. I like what I like and I don't feel personally attacked when others don't. I'm definitely not going to make a thread about it or attempt to shit on their music in every Death Grips thread. If my reaction seemed strong it's because I'm new to their sound and didn't expect it to be that bad.

Sooo... this is one of those things you say to sound interesing?

"Bro, did you hear the new Death Grips Bjork album?! So wicked!"

Like saying " Bro, that π movie was art I tell you, ART!"

Some real good tracks on here, getting GP vibes from the songs they released. Not sure I understand all the hate for GP, I think it's genius.

GP is indeed great. But it's very different to the The Money Store, which is their most well loved. So I can see the divisness.

idk, this seems like an attack on people who like death grips?

No, it's what you say when you enjoy their work.

Two spins through and I'm putting it right next to Ex Military. Shit is dope.

RE: Yeezus/Death Grips, they were most likely something that influenced Kanye but I think that influence is exaggerated by fans. If you look at the people he worked with directly--Arca, Hudmo, Evian Christ, Gesaffelstein--and sampled it's the same sonic space as Death Grips. Aggressive, abrasive, industrial hiphop. &&&&& and Waterfall are both insanely good releases that touch on the same elements as DG. Kanye wasn't shy to reach out to folks directly to integrate their sound.

I wouldn't say that sound is mainstream yet, but it's definitely not strictly underground. Death Grips are a known commodity in the marketplace the same way Arca (FKA twigs collaborator, who is soon to blow up) and Evian Christ (GOOD music signee, currently touring) are. Guys like Untold are getting bookings off that initial wave. The next two years we're going to see more and more of it creep into the work of popular artists and in the public space in general.

Listened to it again. There are some cool parts but they are brief. But to me it mostly sounds like 5 guys playing whack-a-mole on a soundboard most of the time, and it comes together sometimes.

Oh, nice. I'll be listening to this later since I'm not sure if my officemate would appreciate the sounds of Death Grips, lol. Gov't Plates was the first DG project that didn't really stick with me, but hopefully this'll be different. I like their unpredictable insanity but I still need a little coherency. Tracks like Guillotine, Culture Shock, and Death Heated are what I like best from them.

Anyways, I get that a band like Death Grips isn't gonna appeal to a lot of people. Hell, they're gonna be downright abrasive to most. But the ignorant response from some people is still pretty lame. Just because you don't get the appeal doesn't mean that the people who do are faking it or some shit. People like things you don't like and vice versa, it's not that hard to understand.

Soundcloud listens:

Track 1 - 91,199
Track 2 - 38,482
Track 3 - 28,914
Track 4 - 23,134
Track 5 - 22,780
Track 6 - 18,052
Track 7 - 15,656
Track 8 - 14,886

You can almost see people tapping out after each successive song.

This new shit is definitely on the weirder/noisier side of the Death Grips scale of what the fuck.

If you're vaguely interested I'd recommend The Money Store. It's probably the best introduction to the band, as well as the genre in general. If you liked Yeezus this is basically that, only more extreme.

Awesome, I discovered Death Grips just three weeks ago and since then I've been listening The money store and Exmilitary in exclusive every day!

I hate Bjork, but this sounds great.

in the end, i still prefer exmilitary and money store tbh

of course this could change with the second half of the album.

I listen to a significant amount of extreme and abrasive music, but I just cannot get into Death Grips, no matter how much I try. It just sounds really, really bad. Maybe it's because I tend to really avoid pretty much all hip-hop/rap, but I just don't dig it.

This happens to a good amount of albums on soundcloud, it isn't exclusive to death grips.
