Laser injures Delta pilot's eye

A pilot flying a Delta Air Lines jet was injured by a laser that illuminated the cockpit of the aircraft as it approached Salt Lake City International Airport last week, U.S. officials said.
The plane's two pilots reported that the Boeing 737 had been five miles from the airport when they saw a laser beam inside the cockpit, said officials familiar with government reports of the Sept. 22 incident. The flight, which originated in Dallas, landed without further incident at about 9:30 p.m. local time.


A short while later, however, the first officer felt a stinging sensation in one eye. A doctor who examined the pilot determined that he had suffered a burned retina from exposure to a laser device, the officials said.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) spokeswoman Yolanda Clark confirmed the incident, but declined to provide details.

I just saw a video on stuff like this, I think from a couple years ago. It was 20/20 or something like that. A government helicopter was circling a Chinese(I think, don't quote me) ship off the East coast taking pictures and as soon as the pilot gets out after landing he notices immense pain in his eyes. After looking at the photos, there's a shot of a red dot appearing out a window, and it's pretty much definitely a laser, but the government won't admit it since that'd be a conflict between the two countries. That said, doctors pretty much guaranteed it was a laser. The pilot's eyesight had been permanently damaged and he was predicted to go largely blind eventually. He went public about how this can be used as a weapon and has been used, but it hasn't been made an issue and it's being hidden. If I recall there was something else about Chechyan rebels using a portable high powered laser to damage eyesight in enemies as well.

I think the laser came from an orbiting, secret satellite that has laser weapons capabilitites. Or from aliens. Seriously, the truth is out there.

Or, it could be scattering from laser testing at the Utah Test and Training Range or the Dugway Proving Grounds. Dugway is 80 miles SW of the airport; UTTR is in the other direction, but there is a crapload of restricted airspace near there -- could have been an air-to-air test.

Dugway is fucking creepy. Looking down the road that leads to Dugway makes it seem like the world is flat, and just ends.

Dugway = the real Area 51.

I find these laser/microwave, etc, weapons that the US and other countries are developing to be very scary. Seriously, a few decades from now, it's going to be possible to kill a person anywhere in the world, from hundreds or thousands of miles away and no one will ever be able to tell who/why it happened. Plus it'll make it easier to control various populations through pain inflicting weapons (like microwave weapons that cause your body to paarlyze with pain, etc.)
