Wow didn't expect the PSP to outsell the DS's launch day goals. Twice as much as the DS. And wasn't the DS the fastest selling system in Europe history?

RETAILERS are expecting the launch of Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) on September 1 to be an instant sellout because demand has already begun to outstrip supply.
More than 150,000 machines will be available in Britain on launch day, more than double the biggest launch in this country so far of a games console, thought to be the Nintendo DS.



One retailer said: “Stock will be very tight at the launch. It is clear that demand has been very high.”

Retailers including Dixons, HMV and Game are understood to have stopped taking pre-orders of the PSP for collection on the launch day.

A spokeswoman for WH Smith said that it would be able to fulfill 95 per cent of its pre-orders on the launch day. “The remaining customers are fully aware that they are not guaranteed to receive their PSP on the launch date, but we have held some back for those customers wanting to come into stores,” she said.

Many retailers have set aside stock to go into stores on the day, but one admitted: “It will be a very limited number.”

Retailers said that they were “satisfied” with their allocation of games hardware from Sony, which has broadened its distribution on launch day to include supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda as well as the specialist stores. Sony hopes to sell one million PSPs by Christmas A spokesman for Sony said: “Clearly, demand is outstanding and obviously we would like to satisfy that. We have very ambitious sales targets and will do our best to get stock in as soon as we can.”

620K in the US, plus probably 10% more for Canada. 700K sold out of 1M shipped isn't that bad.

I'm in the same situation. I whip out Wipeout every couple of days, but for the most part I don't touch my PSP. When I finally stop being a cheap skate and buy a decent sized memory card I'll probably never put the thing down, but until then my PSP will most likely be very lonely. Hopefully Libery City will make it out this year, but I'm not too hopeful. Does anyone here know for sure when Liberty City is going to be released?

Well, people in Europe can bitch about the delay, but they don't have to wait through the summer drought months like we have. They should be getting most of the holiday titles we get or not to far after. Hell, if I read right I think they even get Virtua Tennis before us.

The PSP is definitely past it's honeymoon phase and is clearly getting some lumps from all over. It's got a lot of warts with respect to it's current and future games library, but those two who got banned werent' banned for just what they did in this thread. They've got a short leash for a reason.

I say, bring on the PSP hate. If the PSP crumbles because of a vocal outpour then it wasn't worth it's salt to begin with. I'd bet that doesn't happen and would say that both the DS & the PSP will be viable for some time. The DS just has to work harder to earn it, whereas many are willing to give the PSP a free ride because it's an incredible piece of hardware and has traditionally had spectacular third party support. That premise will continue to be tested until we see some true PSP system seller games.

When we're talking about well established companies, launch sellouts just say to me that the manufacturer didn't supply properly. I think that reflects negatively on the company rather than positively or as bragging rights. That's why I think the PSP North American launch was spectacular. Not only did the PSP launch set records for the region, but there was also plenty of stock available. That is how a successful launch should go. If there are not enough units available for launch then that means the manufacturer messed up during the production phase. My ideal launch is not having to wait in a line all night long outside of some major retailer in the pouring rain or freezing snow just to fight geeks at the crack of dawn for the latest holiday fueled cabbage patch fad.

When I hear Sony talking about not being able to meet demand in Europe it only makes me wonder how much longer it will now take them to catch up to the competition when they're having these types of production missteps.

If MS pulls off a worldwide launch of their console within weeks of each other without any major snafus it will really make the poorly staggered PSP launch look even worse. Sony really needs to get their system out the door in Europe ASAP.

This is just the UK, although at our standard 30% of Europe rule (which has essentially been validated by screen digest), that would be only ~450k across all of Europe, which seems quite small.

I'm betting that Europe will have a full Million units in the first week available (no idea how many will actually sell)

I agree, i am an rpg fan and there are like no rpg games worth getting in english countries. The only thing that is stopping me from getting a psp are the lack of rpg games in english countries.
