Fuck at this point why not mandate all police issued weapons to be fitted with cameras... that way we don't have to take "their word" on a shooting being justified.

The real issue is trigger happy cops. They're taught to shoot first ask questions later. They'll always have their hand on the trigger and if anything "spooks" them, they'll open fire. If a cop has a gun out, don't move, don't do anything, don't even move unless he tells you too real slow. One mistake and they'll open fire. That's what my dad taught me, once a cop has a gun out he's looking for any reason to pull the trigger.

Why the unrest? Is it not legal to shoot Black men in Florida now? (Unless the shooter is black, of course. Blacks can't have guns or they evolve into Thugs.)

Have we not learned anything in the last few weeks?

The only good thing about these cops was that they were bad shooters. I see this trend growing where cops are allowed to shoot first at the slightest non-threatening movement and to evaluate the situation later if it really was threatening. This is really scary especially for minorities who are always thought to be criminals even in their own homes.

It is the middle of the night (2:42 AM is night, right?) and someone is rummaging through a car. Calling the police is the right choice.

Why? Are you imposing a curfew on the people that live around you? Why are you staring out of your front window at 2am? Seems suspicious to me...better call the police.

Seems like in addition to Driving While Black, now there's Being Black Outside At Nighttime. Utterly disgusting state of affairs, and the general blanket racism that permeates some areas will ensure corrective measures will be long in the taking.

In all fairness..

Being or doing _________ while black has always been a problem to Americans. Remember the stories about the people shot for wallets? This is the same thing, these will be the cautionary stories for our children.

The disgusting part is people who don't see the problem. I'm just in awe that so many seemingly educated people, opt to not see color.

Living as a black person means that you have to always consider appearing and carrying ones self in ways that aren't threatening to people. This hasn't really changed.

Better to let the car get stolen in the event it isn't the neighbour? Police call centers prefer the principe of rather one call too many than one call too little. But please, read the entire topic. I'm not going to repeat everything I said. I would like to know what you would have said to the neighbour if it wasn't him, but an actual thief and you didn't call.

Citizens have insurance. For theft.

And there isn't a magic world where a car thief takes 30 minutes to boost a car, from outside of it, in the view of everyone... where you can get your junior g-man badge for thwarting such an egregious crime.

It's better for an innocent person to get shot to pieces than for a thief to get away?

No matter how much you want to feel like you're doing the right thing, it clashes with reality at some point. You shouldn't have to worry about trigger-happy, prejudiced cops shooting people almost literally at the drop of a hat, but you do have to because it happens.

Calling (sic-ing) the cops on someone in America runs the risk of them killing that person, as is proven by this story and others like it. This is not an isolated event. This "one call too many is better than one call too few" doctrine you follow assumes the cops aren't ever wont to shoot anything they see move without provocation. That is not the case.

Are you skeptical of the notion that events like this are at all possible or common? Because if you are, I understand. That doesn't make it okay, but it's understandable. It's so ridiculous that it can't be true, yet it is.

If I happened to see an actual thief rummaging through my neighbor's car and I didn't call the police, I'd link this news story to my neighbor and say "I didn't want you to get shot over this."

Which is a problem with the police, not the fault of a neighbour thinking a crime is being comitted. The neighbour isn't at fault here. He didn't want the neighbour to get shot. You're giving free reign to criminals because you don't believe in the police anymore. It is stuff like that leads to more vigilante civilians and even more killings. But I'll reiterate my point one last time: The caller didnt want this, he/she isn't some racist with a vendetta against the neighbour. S/he just called the police thinking she was helping the old lady next door.

You mean like George Zimmerman?

Remind me to stay out of Florida and Joni's neighborhood.

Exactly. The cops are the one's to blame here and they should all be tried for attempted murder in my opinion. It's nuts to read this article. I mean why the hell would you just open fire like that? It's nuts and an extreme overuse of force.

1. You know the police seem to shoot unarmed people. Thats their problem.

2. Knowing this, and understanding this, you call police.

The neighbor is not at fault. The neighbor is just not thinking about their actions outside of protecting a non-living car, they aren't thinking that they should make sure a crime is being committed before the police arrive to possibly shoot someone to death.

As others have said, people like you are best to be avoided by minorities, or anyone else minding

their

own

business.

OK, all crimes for which someone should be insured, shouldn't be reported.

Stop being obtuse.

The topic, and lets stick to it Joni, is a car. You should verify that a person is actually breaking into a car. Before summoning the police, that have issues shooting people to death.

Its not too much to ask, and it doesn't mean that you don't report crime.Feel free to keep arguing with people the asinine idea that you should NOT report crime.Report crime, report suspicious people. But think about how suspicious things really are, and if a person could be looking through their car in the middle of the night vs a jungle thief. Criminals act in certain ways, hiding from sight is the main one. You don't steal cars from outside. Watching someone for a few minutes would tell you if they are attempting to steal a car, or not. Again, people should avoid people who don't have the mental capacity to do this.Peoples lives are at stake.

Stop detaching yourself from the fact that police have issues in this specific situation. And you're aware of this. Don't feign ignorance, and say it shouldn't be a consideration before calling the police on fellow tax paying home owning citizens.

If it's a problem with the police, then it's a problem with everyone. If the cops shoot people for doing nothing, no matter what the person calling 911 intends, they indirectly got someone shot. No matter how naive you are or how good your intentions may be, you are potentially getting someone shot. By all means, call the cops when you find it necessary, but keep in my that possibility. Is "doing the right thing," enough comfort to counter the fact that that you contributed to someone getting shot?

Until police forces in America are forced to get their acts together, this is a reality we have to deal with. If it bothers you that calling the cops can lead to an innocent person being shot, then rally for police to be held accountable. Call your congressman, or whatever the equivalent is in your country. You can say "well, I did what's right so oh well," or, in the meantime, you can acknowledge reality.

If you value the life of your neaighbor, make sure you're certain a crime is being committed before calling the police in the U.S., particularly Florida.

EDIT: Seriously though: can you see how it's potentially disastrous to call the cops about something that might not be a crime? do you TRULY believe it's worth it to call the cops about something that might not be a crime when it could lead to an innocent person getting shot/killed? really??? Are you just not making any concessions/giving any quarter in your argument because... you want to be right, or something?

Sigh, it's stories like this that are increasingly making me heavily consider moving to another country.

Also, you shouldn't even bother with Joni. He lives in another country and simply just doesn't understand.

Joni understands just fine. Joni is trying to promote this idea of the neighbor not having any responsibility to think of the current environment before they act. People should think before they act, regardless of country. Its the human thing to do. Joni is taking issue with people blaming the neighbor, so their position is to defend the neighbor 100%. The neighbor doesn't need defense. THe neighbor needs to think their actions through, which has a 50/50 chance in winding up a shooting. This is what Joni doesn't want to discuss.

Not sure where you're going to move to, it ain't sunshine and roses for blacks in any first world country. Preeeeetty sure blacks are the most hated ethnic group in the world...who've done nothing to deserve the hate. They're hated simply because of their skin, I mean really step back and think about how absurd that is.

all of that good for nothing free labor really pisses people off. Enough to poison the community with drugs and deny voting rights.

The food and weather is better elsewhere though, same with transportation. If I'm going to be hated (semi-hated? I'm light-skinned) then I'll do so in France where I can travel on the TGV across the country

Of course. Well aware of this fact. But it isn't just because of discrimination that I want to move, it's a multitude of other compounding issues that are slowly piling up. Political issues, quality of life, etc. It's just another issue on the pile.

At least in other countries (the ones I'm looking at anyway) both civilians and [some] police officers don't carry guns. Something to consider.

See, spring knows what's up.

EDIT: At the very least I want to get out of the south (I live in Alabama, fairly close to where this happened). I'll know I'll never escape racism, but I can sure as hell do my best to mitigate it.

I've been thinking about France...

Seemed black folks and french folks were mean to me when I was there... (only for a lay over at CDG) But i've been wanting to live there for a while. Figure all you need to do is make an effort to learn french?

Japan was nice, but you will need periodic breaks. Low to no crime, clockwork mass transit, good food and entertainment.

Not to mention the instant celebrity status for being different.

Also, dat craving for the BBC is off the hook in that country. Pretty easy when you're well above the (admitedly miniscule) national average lol.

Yep. Japan's a great place to be black.

On topic:- The incident's appalling, but it's just another one in a long line of police shootings involving innocent African Americans.

How bad is New York ? I'm thinking about doing an internship there. I'm from Inner city London, so I have experienced my fair share of police BS but they dont have guns over here sooo.

Holy shit. this could be done.

Police weapons that only work for the officers wearing a smartlink around their wrists, and the guns have built in recorders. This needs to be done.

Blacks have been moving to France to escape American racism for centuries, but...France has changed...
